Do you have more than 1 bank account? What do you use them for?

I have a HSBC current account but have set a Monzo account to use on holiday as there are no fees. Is there any advantage to having 2 accounts? Do people use one for bills and one for spending on a card? Or something else? My DP said he uses one for shopping but I’m not sure why.

I have a starling account for everyday spending. I transfer a fixed amount every month and stick to it. So the week before month end I’ll eat out of the freezer if starling is running low.

I note everything I spend in my normal account, every last £1. I don’t do that with starling. I know it has X amount a month for food, petrol, going out and that’s it.

CoastalCalm · 10/08/2025 09:14

My husband and I have bank accounts with NatWest where our pay goes into and our personal spends , phone contract , petrol etc come out - we transfer monthly into a third bank account to cover all the house related stuff and food budget. I’ve got a Revolut account for my holidays too - he doesn’t really do overseas holidays

MissHollysDolly · 10/08/2025 09:16

I do most of my day-to-day banking with Lloyds. Current account, joint account (both for bills), credit card and then savings/ ISA. I get paid into that account every month and leave only the amount needed to pay the bills/ direct debits (utility etc from joint account, gym etc from my account) the rest of the money goes into a starling account for everyday spending.

I’ve got multiple accounts with different banks and multiple accounts within those banks.

few accounts opened due to offers and financial incentives for having an account with them.
but also within my main account I have lots of different accounts for different spends - food shopping, general spends, petrol, holiday and Xmas savings, annual insurance payments, general savings, long term savings, tax credits account plus bills account.
it’s how I budget so what’s left in the spends account is literally for me

whirlyhead · 10/08/2025 09:29

I have 8 though 3 of them are non UK ones.

DorothyWainwright · 10/08/2025 09:40

Yes. Two totally different banks in case one crashes for a couple of days. Means I have back up for day to day spending.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 10/08/2025 09:44

I've got a bill account where all the direct debit go from, an everyday account where I put all the money not needed in the bill account and use that for things like grocery shopping, and I have a savings account.

With £20.13 in it. 🤣

singthing · 10/08/2025 09:50

I have several!
Main account (where salary goes in, and most DDs go out)
Chase (transfer money on pay day and use it for day to day/cashback)
2 x unused HSBC. Got them for the account switch bonuses. Will keep till I can recycle them into another account switching bonus.
I might have another unused one hanging round too, yet again from an account switch bonus.

Plus 3 credit cards that I use according to cashback/rewards offers at the time. Obviously all paid off in full by DD each month.

Plus ISAs and Premium Bonds. And some other savings accounts within main banks. And pots "saved" in my TopCashback and Quidco accounts for that matter.

tarheelbaby · 10/08/2025 09:55

.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/08/2025 10:01

I think it's pretty common to have different accounts for different purposes if you are financially comfortable. Current, joint, easy access savings, premium bonds, cash ISA, S&S ISA, mortgage, pension.

stargirl1701 · 10/08/2025 10:03

Four. Joint account with DH for bills, current account for day-to-day spending, savings account and ISA Stocks & Shares.

DilemmaDelilah · 10/08/2025 11:35

I have 4

Personal current account
Personal savings account
Joint current account
Joint savings account

I'm pretty sure DH has the same. Obviously we share the joint accounts but I don't know if he has a personal savings account as it's really none of my business!

Dippythedino · 10/08/2025 11:38

Joint account with dh for household bills, individual savings & current accounts & a revolute account.

BeeCucumber · 10/08/2025 11:39

I have two accounts - in case one has technical issues.

zingally · 10/08/2025 11:58

I have 2. My HSBC account is my "proper" grown-up account that bills come out of, and my Starling account is for savings towards short-term goals and more casual spending. I like the "savings spaces" feature on there, where I can easily save for specific things.

I've got multiple accounts with different banks acquired when it was normal to offer interest on current accounts or where opening a current account gave you access to certain savings accounts.

I've got one current account that I've had for many years which my income is paid into and the majority of my standing orders go out of. Then once a month I have to feed money through all the other accounts to fulfil their monthly deposit requirements.

Same. If someone asked me how many accounts I have I couldn't tell them.
Two main active current accounts but several more that just exist for the monthly savers.
I do close them when they are no longer useful but there's still a lot.

BeaLola · 10/08/2025 12:08

I have a Starling Current Account in which I have a Starling Saver attached to it - I use the current account when abroad as no fees and I like the detail it gives /ease of use /their customer service and I also use it for personal spending eg my gift to DH for Christmas , my lotions and potions that I buy

I also have a Nationwide current account with a cash ISA- my salary is paid into this current account and all my DDebits come out of it eg Council Tax, Electricity, Gas, Water, my magazine subscription

Natsku · 10/08/2025 12:09

I have my main bank account that my salary gets paid into, and another account that I use for savings, and transfer any spare money each month into it, and a revolut account for using abroad. And another account (with my main bank) that DD's inheritance is stored in, though really ought to find some account with better interest for that.

LemondrizzleShark · 10/08/2025 12:12

We have lots! One for me, one for DH, one for bills, and one for side business. Plus savings accounts, ISAs, credit cards.

Very handy for budgeting if you have a separate account for bills - means no chance of anything bouncing/accidentally overspending, and I can put additional money for house stuff to one side by transferring it into that account. Everything in my personal account on the second of the month is “mine”.

TeenLifeMum · 10/08/2025 12:14

One for all direct debits so I know that’s covered and one for food/petrol/extras.

(then savings accounts on top)

peoplegetreadyforthetrain · 10/08/2025 12:15

I have loads and use it as a way to budget. I have one for bills and I transfer a set amount in there at the start of each month. Another for travel (commuting not holidays!) as that’s quite a big expense for us and I need to make sure I’ve set aside enough for that.

Loads of smaller savings accounts for holidays, Christmas, birthdays etc so that the cost is spread out across the year. A longer term savings account for us and one for each of the kids.

One account for general expenses, food shopping etc.

It’s really easy to do if you’re ok with online/mobile banking. It takes literally a matter of minutes to set up a savings account if you’re an existing customer with a current account and you can do it all online.

All these accounts are split between two banks, just because I think it’s safer to have money in more than one place in case one has any issues.

I also have two credit cards for bigger purchases (for added security and to get points/cashback) and an ISA with a separate provider as they offer a much better rate than either bank.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 10/08/2025 07:49

It would be best to have another savings account with a totally different bank in case of technical issues with your main bank.

I actually do, was just keeping it simple for the sake of answering OP's question. I have a second savings account with a different bank and two credit cards that I could use in an emergency. Although my main accounts are with a big high street bank and if they have technical issues a big chunk of the economy will probably grind to a halt...!

edwinbear · 10/08/2025 13:32

I've got current accounts with 4. Natwest (old account from childhood/uni days), HSBC (ex employer), Santander (ex employer) and just opened an account with Barclays who I'm starting a new job with. Banks often insist on paying staff into one of their own accounts (fair enough) so every time I move jobs, I acquire a new bank account! I do use them all, split between bills/fun money/back up fun money. Then I have savings accounts with each as well to keep the maximum with one bank under the £85k FSCS limit. I have a spreadsheet with the balances summarised so I can keep track.

MagnificentBastard · 10/08/2025 13:35

I have mine, a joint account with my husband, and various savings accounts.

thetooththewholetooth · 10/08/2025 14:15

We have 3 joint accounts. Main current account, savings account and a current account we had to set up when getting our mortgage. We don't use it at all, apart from one standing order a month and payments to mortgage account
