If someone described a baby as Bonny, what would it mean to you?

OP posts:

Beautiful, happy, smiling

Shufflebumnessie · 09/08/2025 15:44

Happy and smiling, healthy looking and cute.

Visun · 09/08/2025 15:44

In Scotland bonnie means beautiful. A lovely compliment to your baby!

An old fashioned northern term my grandmother used a lot. It means very healthy and happy looking.

Same

3amamama · 09/08/2025 15:46

Healthy, content, thriving.

CottageGoblin · 09/08/2025 15:48

Bonny. Braw. Beautiful. Pretty.

TwoFastHorses · 09/08/2025 15:48

In Scotland it’s a ‘bonnie’ baby and I’ve never known it to be associated with chubby or fat. It’s just an affectionate way of describing an attractive/pretty baby. There used to be ‘Bonnie Baby Competitions’ in the newspapers and ppl voted. I don’t know if they still do this.

CarpetKnees · 09/08/2025 15:49

Healthy and happy looking.

Bonnie means beautiful.

I guess these days we'd be more likely to say 'cute'.

SL2924 · 09/08/2025 15:50

Beautiful

johnworf · 09/08/2025 15:50

Cute and chubby 😊

SunflowerTattoos · 09/08/2025 15:50

Healthy and cute, pretty if it's said about a girl. I'm shocked to read some people use it to mean chubby. I'm northern and use it a lot, would never mean to say anyone was chubby 😳

Travelfairy · 09/08/2025 15:56

Cute, good looking happy baby

WhineAndWine1 · 09/08/2025 16:00

Bonny someone who is pretty or handsome. It’s got nothing to do with weight 🙄

PollyannaNibbs · 09/08/2025 16:00

It’s old fashioned northern for ‘cute’. My Gran used to say it

I think lots of people still say it. It means pretty or I suppose handsome for a boy.

PollyannaNibbs · 09/08/2025 16:01

I'm northern and use it a lot, would never mean to say anyone was chubby

Same here.

Rosy-cheeked, a picture of health, a bundle of joy. Thriving! ☺️

Hoppinggreen · 09/08/2025 16:03

Personally it would probably mean that the baby was a bit ugly and I was trying to find something nice to say.

KiteFlight · 09/08/2025 16:05

I haven’t heard it said for years, but when I heard it said it was usually said about babies who were very smiley and had the chubby cheeks and chubby arms and legs.

Themagicclaw · 09/08/2025 16:06

Cute. Smiley, healthy etc. Basically a nice thing to say to any baby.

However I am in a part of Scotland where all babies are described as bonny by default!

MyDeftHedgehog · 09/08/2025 16:08

Rosy cheeked and sturdy 🥰

BourgeoisBabe · 09/08/2025 16:11

Good looking, pretty something like that. No weight connotations at all for me

amylou8 · 09/08/2025 16:13

Chubby but in a healthy not fat way, and a happy disposition. It's a compliment.

Berlinlover · 09/08/2025 16:13

My grandmother always called my brother bonny, he was exceptionally cute when he was little.

GAJLY · 09/08/2025 16:14

Healthy, rosy cheeked baby.

Blank1234 · 09/08/2025 16:25

A lovely cute looking baby (as many are only cute to their parents 😳😂)
Definitely NOT chubby as many are saying 😵‍💫
