MP thinks charity rowers are illegal immigrants

Title of thread says it all really.

Group of people trying to row around the UK for motor neurone disease get confused with illegal immigrants.

I did find the comment of one of the rowers rather funny:

”People were asking where the Royal Navy is when you need them. I used to be a Royal Marine so the Royal Navy was on the boat”.

At least it’s getting publicity for the charity and the MP donated £1000.

Actually one of the people in the boat once rowed the Atlantic so he is probably one of the vv few people in the world who could successfully row the North Sea - but he didn’t. Thank goodness the police got there before the mob - a significant number of the twitter comments were apparently suggesting the occupants of the boat should be shot in the water before they set foot on land.

He has refused to apologise.

Except the whole very point is that he wasn’t being vigilant - or he’d have known who these people were 🤦🏼‍♀️

He saw a rowing boat and assumed.

Yes, it would be intimidating for any group of rowers to have a vigilante group trying to follow them, but probably much less so for a former marine and a group of very fit white men. It's telling that Rupert Lowe doesn't think potentially endangering any of his constituents who are not white who want to go out rowing on the sea. I'm glad that the charity benefited by £1000, which is no doubt pocket change to him, but it's disgraceful that he hasn't apologised or acknowledged that his actions could have caused real harm to innocent people. It is shameful that he is an MP.

If I was in the public eye I would check and check again before making these big pronouncements !

Totally understandable mistake. Both begin with the same three letters...

NORSE = north men, Scandinavian, come from Scandinavia.
NORMANS = from Normandy / France.

Normandy/ France not in Scandinavia.

Apparently, Lowe isn't the only one not to know his small boats....

A cynic might say that this as done entirely for publicity because I don’t believe he is dumb enough to mistake a boat of rowers for a dinghy of illegal migrants.

The Norse would be coming from much further than France. They’d be needing more than a dinghy I’d have thought.
