MP thinks charity rowers are illegal immigrants

Title of thread says it all really.

Group of people trying to row around the UK for motor neurone disease get confused with illegal immigrants.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdd32lnq445o

I did find the comment of one of the rowers rather funny:

”People were asking where the Royal Navy is when you need them. I used to be a Royal Marine so the Royal Navy was on the boat”.

At least it’s getting publicity for the charity and the MP donated £1000.

Rupert Lowe, a man standing outside. He is looking directly at the camera and smiling. He is wearing a tan linen suit jacket with a pale blue shirt.

Rupert Lowe mistakes charity rowers for 'illegal migrants'

Rupert Lowe says he will donate £1,000 to charity but makes "no apologies over being vigilant".

I think they mean that you can't say to someone on here they're being stupid even if they are in case of deletion.

Ah right, I see what you mean.

Apparently he received a large number of urgent complaints from constituents..

Don't they know where they live in relation to France?

It’s conceivable that they may attempt other routes if they know Kent etc are heavily manned and they may be deported now. The Netherlands to the UK is I think about 7 times the distance, but I wouldn’t put it past them to try.

All forrin countries are the same to them, I guess.

Edited for clarity.

They weren’t foreign.

He’s on Facebook saying the publicity has surged members of his new party, ‘Restore UK’. A cynic may say the name was chosen to hoover up votes from another, similarly named party, on account of voting mistakes 😬

Via the North Sea?!
They're not Vikings
I swear looking at a map should be the law for everyone 😁

And they’re not Norse either yet they’re arriving from France.

There’s no reason they wouldn’t attempt it if Dover became unsuccessful.

Perhaps "they" are building longships as we speak?

They haven't attempted it though. It's sheer hysteria and panic fear mongering.
I seriously think people need to step away from their phones and go touch some grass/see some nature if they see dinghies everywhere where there aren't any.
As someone upthread said, what does that mean for those who like to go out on the sea? Should they have to put up with vigilante idiots when they've done nothing wrong?

I didn’t say they will. Or that they have. Or ‘BE ON GUARD’. I’ve said now Starmer is deporting them at last, it’s conceivable they may try another route.

I'm really not sure if a small dinghy has the ability to do that distance.

Maybe we need some bananas for scale lol

cakeorwine · 08/08/2025 18:10

They were rowing as well.

Maybe they rowed from France? I mean people do do long distance rowing

I agree, could a RIB though? I’m not a sailor, maybe one will show up here and answer.

pmsl.... 😂

lljkk · 08/08/2025 18:25

"It was a little bit like the swamp scene from Shrek where the vigilantes come out in the dark with their pitchforks," said one of the charity rowers on R4 just now.

😂

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/08/2025 18:25

@JamesMacGill no. Itis well over 100 miles by sea from the Netherlands to the Norfolk coast. It's the North sea as well, so pretty choppy.

No one is going to Norfolk from the Netherlands by dingy. HTH

Exactly. We aren't allowed to say Reform types are stupid in case their feelings are hurt - there's quite a few of them here.

cakeorwine · 08/08/2025 18:32

Apparently he's annoyed that people are pointing out his mistake rather than talking about the people who come here by boat.

What would have happened if it had been a different group of people in a dinghy? What would the people on the beach have done if they had landed on the beach?

Grantanow · 08/08/2025 18:38

I can't think how he could possibly have made such a mistake.

cakeorwine · 08/08/2025 18:41

So if he sees a sailing boat with people on board who he thinks shouldn't be here, will he be tweeting that as well?
