I have cleaned up.my diet and am losing weight at a startling rate

Which was initially good, but now I'm starting to worry.

I was 10st9 and 5'7, so never fat but a bit heavier than I'd like, between 10st and 10st4 is, I think, my ideal weight. Mostly I wanted to be feel better, my diet was never dreadful, but I knew the junkand the booze had crept in.

So since the beginning of June I have:

-Drunk moderately and only once over a weekend. I never drank during the week, but I'd have "a few" at least 2 nights pw. Now I have a couple, once.

  • Cut out snacking - here I was probably worse than I realised, and saying no snacks at all makes it easier for me to stick to.
  • No takeaways, but they were never that frequent.
  • Made an effort to choose healthier options when faced with a menu
  • Desserts only at weekends.
  • Stopped using the car all the time and walk as much as possible.

I'm 55, an age when weight is supposed to be difficult to shift. I've never been hungry or felt deprived. I've lost a stone in 2 months.

Does this sound right with the changes I've made or is it too much?

I got a dog. Walked 2-3 hours a day. Lost nothing.

It's always the food that makes the difference. The walking just keeps you fit and healthier. If you're still eating too much it will make no difference.

InTheWindow · 07/08/2025 22:02

I’m a nanny, when I’ve had jobs that allow me to walk everywhere I can eat loads and not put on weight. Jobs that require mainly driving (like my current one) I have to be really careful what I eat.

Scarylett · 07/08/2025 22:02

Just keep an eye on the weight loss. The WHO suggests that unintentional weight loss is a red flag.

I’m crying with laughter at all detail about full fat Greek yogurt and loads of salad then just dropping in WALKING TEN MILES A DAY 😂😂😭😭😭

Eat more or walk less 🤷‍♀️

then you will figure out if you have a health issue. You probably don’t.

very few people have time for the sort of lifestyle the OP is managing to live.

They do. I bet you are online each day as much as the op is doing her thing. Come off MN and you would easily have the time. You post on here all the time and have done for years as I recognise your name and wouldn't do unless you posted a lot.
I'm.on here at least 4 days a week for a couple of hours wasting my life!

She’s intentionally cut out booze, snacks, junk food and is deliberately walking 10 miles a day. How is that unintentional weight loss?

MascaraGirl · 07/08/2025 22:06

OP, I’m the same age, height and weight as you (when you started) and I can’t get any lower!

BlackFriYay · 07/08/2025 22:06

OP posts to say she's worried she's losing too much weight then announces she's walking 10 miles a day.

Poster - stop walking 10 miles a day for a week and see if the weight loss stops?

OP - why would I do that?

🫣🤦🏼‍♀️

WOW, are you shaming someone for being on MN a lot? Shock

Gosh. 😐

@Waterbortle

So you're now almost down to under 9 and a half stone, at 5 ft 7, and in your mid 50s? With a BMI of 21? Confused

Rather you than me. Most people over 50 look better with a bit of weight on them. As a pp said, losing a stone in 2 months - when you were not even remotely overweight (purely by 'not snacking' and walking a bit more,) sounds odd. I would worry about other issues.

As a pp said, this is a weird stealth boast.

That’s a great bmi.

No just saying having a go at the OP for having time to do stuff when so many of us (me included) spend for too long on SM is a bit silly.

I'm walking an average of 10 miles a day, it's amazing how that adds up when you don't use the car. According to Google that's between 700 & 1200 calories, so I guess that makes quite a difference

Is that all a change? That’s a huge amount of walking but I guess you walked quite a lot before anyway?

Waterbortle · 07/08/2025 22:21

LittlePigRobinson · 07/08/2025 22:00

That's what I'd like to know too. I like walking and can easily do 10 miles but every day? Absolutely no chance because I have a job and stufc to do. Unless your job allows you to walk all day OP?

I've explained several times. I walk journeys I would otherwise be driving, and by the time you allow time for traffic and parking it doesn't take much longer.

OP posts:
YourFairCyanReader · 07/08/2025 22:26

I've lost two stones, at a similar rate to you OP. I'm still losing weight but because I'm nearly at target weight I'm starting to wonder how I get my calories back up again for maintaining. I'm not going hungry and don't particularly want to eat more. I'm not concerned for myself, I just think your body gets used to less, just as it can get used to having more.

I mainly MN while my kids are in bed, I can’t go out for a walk then as they’re too young to be left alone!

waitingforpost · 07/08/2025 22:43

I used to be able to walk to work, it was great. 1.5 hours a day.

Then I got a new job which is a 35 min car journey. It unfortunately is a 2 hour 45 min walk which I definitely don't have time for.

prettyrobot · 07/08/2025 22:44

I think you are doing great, your diet sounds perfectly healthy and good on you for walking lots. Think of it as a plus that you are losing it fast as you won’t need to spend so much on the drugs in the long term.

Not eating more than I needed too and for the last two years just one meal a day

Walking pad!

I have one 😁, but I can MN while on it! Just pointing out it’s not as clear cut as ‘you could be walking instead of MNing’. For example I spent 20 mins on MN earlier while waiting for my opticians appointment. Yeah I could have walked a mile in that time, but I had to be in the waiting room waiting for my name to be called.

SmartDog · 07/08/2025 22:49

I’m not sure why you’re surprised at the weigh loss. You’re probably consuming around what you need per day in terms of calories to maintain your weight, but you’re probably burning off around 800 per day walking, so losing a stone in a month is about right. 21 is a good BMI, so if you want to maintain your current weight and continue to walk as much as you do, you need to increase your calories.

Why do people have a problem with OP walking so much? Weird. I think I walk about 6 miles per day on a couple of dog walks that take less than an hour each plus whatever else I do. It adds up.

Brunettesmorefun · 07/08/2025 22:50

movintothecountry · 07/08/2025 17:53

Sorry but this is a right stealth boast. I would bloody love to just cut out snacking and some booze and drop a stone Blush. It's so painfully hard for me to lose any amount of weight and I'm three stone heavier and ten years younger.

I am the same although older than you and have tried several diets and not been able to lose weight. Recently I started the Human Being Diet and for the first time am actually losing weight … almost a stone so far.

So you could fit in it by walking instead of being on mumsnet. It’s fine that you don’t, obviously, I wouldn’t want to exercise at night either, but it is a choice you could make of you wanted.
