I have cleaned up.my diet and am losing weight at a startling rate

Which was initially good, but now I'm starting to worry.

I was 10st9 and 5'7, so never fat but a bit heavier than I'd like, between 10st and 10st4 is, I think, my ideal weight. Mostly I wanted to be feel better, my diet was never dreadful, but I knew the junkand the booze had crept in.

So since the beginning of June I have:

-Drunk moderately and only once over a weekend. I never drank during the week, but I'd have "a few" at least 2 nights pw. Now I have a couple, once.

  • Cut out snacking - here I was probably worse than I realised, and saying no snacks at all makes it easier for me to stick to.
  • No takeaways, but they were never that frequent.
  • Made an effort to choose healthier options when faced with a menu
  • Desserts only at weekends.
  • Stopped using the car all the time and walk as much as possible.

I'm 55, an age when weight is supposed to be difficult to shift. I've never been hungry or felt deprived. I've lost a stone in 2 months.

Does this sound right with the changes I've made or is it too much?

I eat more instinctively when Im doing any sort of activity. Unless Im sedentary my body needs a lot more food which is way more than Im actually using up in calories when moving around.

Ineffable23 · 07/08/2025 18:24

I mean if you're losing weight unintentionally you should probably go to the doctors. Or accept that actually cutting out all the things you are avoiding isn't actually very healthy if it puts you in an unintentional calorie deficit.

ruffler45 · 07/08/2025 18:22

Out of interest , how many calories is that sort of daily intake?

No idea, I've never counted calories.

I wish I had the time to do that much walking. I was only just about managing 3 miles a day and I dont have time for that now either.

I do it for journeys I was doing anyway, and honestly don't find it takes as long as you'd think. If you drive or use public transport for short journeys, you have to allow time for traffic and parking. If you walk you don't. So my 3 mile commute, I'd leave home at 8:30 to guarantee being there for 9am by car. Now I leave at 8:10.

My gym class is 25 mins walk, but I'd have allowed 20 mins by car because of the one way system and parking.

If you e never restricted before, it will come off more easily. Sadly those of us who have done it since childhood find it much harder.

Eat more. Good food, not crap. Keep an eye on it, just in case.

waitingforpost · 07/08/2025 18:32

I'm walking an average of 10 miles a day, it's amazing how that adds up when you don't use the car.

😆

Doristheclitoris · 07/08/2025 18:34

I’m not sure what you are worried about? You made big changes with your nutrition and are walking 10 miles a day, losing around 2lbs a week sounds bang on.

TimetoGetUpNow · 07/08/2025 18:36

I was going to say it sounds like a lot to lose. I could lose maybe half a stone in 2 months with that exact ‘diet’ in my early 40s, but now in my 50s it doesn’t work the same.

But then the 10 miles a day (plus gym class!) explained it!

It gives me hope so thank you!

I agree, if you have it to lose. But to keep losing?

I'm worried because weight loss was late DH's first symptom, and he too thought it was a good thing, caused by cutting out lattes and takeaway lunches during lockdown.

Juslooking2 · 07/08/2025 18:41

Why don’t you cut out all the walking for a week and see if you keep losing weight?

What's funny? It does. I walk to work, 6 miles there and back, to the supermarket 3miles, to the gym 3 miles, to my Mum's 2 miles, to see a friend for coffee 3 miles, round the shops at lunch time. Etc etc. It does add up.

Why would I want to?

Why would I want to?

Because it seems like you are worried it is a health issue? That would be one way to find out

Well you know what has made you lose so you can easily change your habits in order to maintain, as is normal with any form of weight loss endeavour.

edit, as in missed it out - see your GP if you are genuinely concerned there is a medical issue.

Mt563 · 07/08/2025 18:46

Eat more and then see if you're still losing weight. You're not eating enough to maintain weight given the substantial amount of exercise you're doing. It probably would be helpful to track calories a few days and find out the range for your base calorie burn.

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/08/2025 18:48

movintothecountry · 07/08/2025 17:53

Sorry but this is a right stealth boast. I would bloody love to just cut out snacking and some booze and drop a stone Blush. It's so painfully hard for me to lose any amount of weight and I'm three stone heavier and ten years younger.

If this is making you feel bad then surely it's a sign to do something about it rather than lashing out?

Backtothebestbits · 07/08/2025 18:48

You’re clearly not eating anywhere near enough calories if todays menu is anything to go by and you’re doing that amount of walking a day.
You’re doing yourself no favours health wise by being so extreme.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 07/08/2025 18:50

Saying why would I want to, I don’t track calories etc is being facetious given you are saying the weight loss concerns you and people are offering genuine advice. 🙄

Newbutoldfather · 07/08/2025 18:50

You sound like you are on the verge of an eating disorder.

10 miles per day walking and gym and you are eating a reasonable amount but not nearly enough for that amount of exercise.

Do you want your BMI any lower? 21 sounds good. You either need to eat more or cut out some of that activity.

waitingforpost · 07/08/2025 18:55

What's funny?

Because you left out the fact you are walking 10 miles a day when asking about whether you should be worried about losing weight!

Itisnotdownonanymap · 07/08/2025 18:58

During the pandemic I had a phase of walking 20 0000 steps a day and the weight dropped off. I was peri-menopausal, so not at an age where it's particularly easy to lose.

MJ1980 · 07/08/2025 18:58

Well done 👏

Brownieshonour · 07/08/2025 19:00

I’m a long time Slimming World target member, and a stone a month loss is about average in my group: SW plan is just healthy, clean eating, much as your diet sounds.

RaininSummer · 07/08/2025 19:03

Your diet sounds fine but with all that exercise you will need more calories to avoid losing weight so add some healthy snacks if you have lost enough weight. I don't thinks it becoming an eating disorder as suggested above. You are doing what we all should really if we had time for the walking and our lives lend themselves to it .

That dosen't make it a stealth boast. You having trouble losing weight is not the OPs fault. Nobody should be made to feel like they can't post for fear of upsetting someone.
OP is checking that she isn't losing weight too fast because that can be cause for concern.
Really wish people would stop accusing others of boasting just because they have or can do something that you can't or dont have. It is getting ridiculous.
