Help! Gift for SIL

HeadWall · 06/08/2025 19:06

Been invited to SIL's this weekend for a bbq to celebrate her birthday. It's also the first event they've hosted since moving house.
I bought her chocolate at Christmas and Easter. We always take a bottle of wine when we visit anyway. We bought posh alcohol for BIL's last gift. She has skin issues so is picky on toiletries and I really wouldn't know what she can use. She has recently gone on a diet so I'd rather avoid food.
What can I get her?

@HeadWall

Inspired by another thread; pastry forks

or something from Ototo?

HeadWall · 07/08/2025 20:07

@Roothewheel yes, but I only see her a few times a year: Christmas and DC's birthdays. Occasionally Easter and if IL's have a special birthday.

In that, I’d get a lovely card and pop a JL voucher in it

Flowers or an upmarket potted plant - think something from Waitrose or M and S.

Ilovelurchers · 08/08/2025 18:40

M and S voucher, or a Boots voucher maybe?

Or can your brother text his brother and ask why voucher she would most like?

I, for example, would like a voucher for Lush, but there is no way anybody could know that unless they asked me or my daughter.

So either ask, or go generic.....

Something from Neom

They've got some beautiful outdoor candles for the summer. Gift for the garden but also a consumable.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 08/08/2025 19:17

Get her a really nice voucher for somewhere like John Lewis then she can please herself with plenty of selection including high end brands.

Frederick12 · 08/08/2025 19:49

a really posh spice set (google gourmet spice set...) - you could also go for unusual salt and pepper (I love smoked salt and rose pepper)
a beautiful vase (oliver bonas often does great ones)
a small jewellery/ trinket dish
a silk scarf
if they have just move you could get a customised picture (like a map) of the new area/ of a local landmark...
a personalised wooden cutting board/ cheese board
a voucher for a local cafe/ restaurant
a teatime hamper (Fortnum & Mason does nice ones)
you could gift a goat, camel or chicken to help others and they will get a card
buy some herbs and make a small herb garden

the best gift I ever received: For our wedding my bother wrote to all kind of famous people - the prime minister of all european countires, the queen, lot of other (at that time) famous people. Surprisingly, he got lots of answers and best wishes for the couple. So now I have a time capsula at home with wedding wishes from the queen (of course not original but still hugely appreciated), Nelson Mandela, Toni Blair (i mean, they are of course all on behalf but its such a blast reading through!)

HS1990 · 08/08/2025 19:51

Experience day.

You can get a variety pack type deal so she can choose her own experience... but it's paid in advance by you.

bettyboo9 · 08/08/2025 19:54

A candle, lovely throw/ blanket, flowers, afternoon tea for you both

foxpillow · 08/08/2025 19:59

Bloom and Wild do a flower subscription for 3 months which would give her nice flowers in the new home. Or just a bunch of flowers if budget is lower.

pizzaHeart · 08/08/2025 20:42

You didn’t specify your budget OP and do you want 2 presents or one?

Maybe you can go for an experience at least for her birthday: cocktail class or massage or spa voucher?
Can you ask SIL what she fancies for the new house?
I wouldn’t go for indoor plant but maybe outdoor one?

Shoppingwithafriend · 08/08/2025 21:19

Some beautiful Danish candles (Ester & Erik)

MrsPositivity1 · 08/08/2025 21:48

Not sure what your budget is but I have this and love it https://www.scandiscents.com/products/waterless-diffuser

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 08/08/2025 21:59

My go to for gifts that aren’t too personal:
Voucher for a local coffee shop
Flowers
Candle
Wine/Champagne/Gin etc
JL voucher
Space NK voucher
Cinema voucher

JayJayj · 08/08/2025 22:16

She is your husband’s sister so surely he should be sorting it out.

I used to do this, but I don’t understand why it’s the wife’s responsibility by default. For a few years now I’ve left it up to him. If they end up with nothing then that’s not my problem. He doesn’t do the gift shopping for my side! So it’s not like it’s unfair.

Lyraloo · 08/08/2025 23:09

What about a voucher for afternoon tea or a restaurant, or a massage voucher or manicure?

Ange59 · 08/08/2025 23:23

A voucher for the cinema or a garden centre or a local hotel pub lunch voucher - experiences are better than stuff if you're not sure what she likes

MetalliCat89 · 08/08/2025 23:52

Go for a voucher. Yes it's bland. Yes it's boring. But she csn buy something she actually wants then.

Borisssss · 09/08/2025 00:31

Honestly this thread has made me think why dont we all just give up the 'gifting' nonsense. We are all just fueling clutter. Most of us can afford to buy what we want - or its just the same £20/£50 quids worth of stuff cycling around the family - and so much stress. I would appreciate something of personal effort - some veggies grown from your garden or a home made dish I could freeze and then use at a later date as a treat not to cook.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/08/2025 07:54

Houseplant in a ceramic pot

SpryCat · 09/08/2025 08:04

I think I’d look online for the best afternoon tea reviews near her or a voucher for massage or for a facial.

Hmwales · 09/08/2025 08:31

Really nice reed diffuser or something pot pourri.
