Think plumber has stolen knickers

WWYD in this situation.

I am having my boiler replaced. A three day job. I have used the plumber before and he seems lovely, is recommended by others too.
He was here yesterday whilst I was at work for most of the day and he was alone in the house. He is coming back today.

I have just come out of the shower to get dressed, and can’t find the knickers I planned to wear today. They are a specific pair that I wear with the dress I will wear today.
The matching bra is there. And the knickers were there the other day. I wore them last week, and remember putting them back when I put the washing away. I have checked the dirty and clean laundry and the washing machine and they are not there.

I know it’s ridiculous but my mind has now moved to the possibility that someone has taken them, and the plumber is the obvious suspect. I have zero evidence apart from the missing knickers. But the thought is obviously sickening as is the thought of him rifling through the drawer (which doesn’t just have underwear in it 😬).

WWYD? Am I being mad? I can’t lock the door to the room or put a camera in there in the 45 mins between now and when he is arriving. I can’t confront him with no evidence. I can’t stop him from coming. Argh! They are nowhere to be seen and a man has had access to my house alone.

I've just recently renewed my home insurance, I wasn't asked any questions about people being in the house alone. Is that a standard clause that I should be checking with my insurer? I've not heard that before

No, it's not. The previous poster is having flights of fancy.

No it’s utter rubbish. If you were having major renovations done then yes you’d tell your insurer. And even then they wouldn’t expect you to be in the house whilst work is being done everyday!

kirinm · 06/08/2025 12:23

If everyone is so convinced all trades are potential burglars / sex pests that can’t be trusted, why bother having them there at all? Do your own work.

Rosesandteashops · 06/08/2025 12:23

I would trap a hair in the knicker drawer, and the door to the bedroom. Then you'd know if someone had been in there. What you'd do about it though, I don't know. I also like the idea of the note in the drawer. But I bet they turn up somewhere. I put an umbrella in the fridge once!

Kateb12 · 06/08/2025 12:33

Seems a strange conclusion to jump to.

unless you've seen him in your bedroom or lurking through your wardrobe then I would shut my mouth.

In all honesty it seems like you've stereotyped him.

very unlikely anyone would risk their job and reputation over doing something like that.

Nearly50omg · 06/08/2025 12:35

What is he doing in your house for 3 DAYS to do a 2 hour job is what I’d be asking!!!

2 hours to replace a boiler? Are you for real?

Even the fastest Plummer in the west could not replace a boiler in 2 hours.

Absentmindedsmile · 06/08/2025 12:43

You’ll find them somewhere. There’s no way the plumber has stolen them.

God so many stupid questions about the underwear. Did you really need op to clarify why she likes a certain pair under a certain dress? It’s obviously because it doesn’t show. And yes, most normal women don’t like their underwear showing through their clothes, even at work 😱🙄 I swear you people are deliberately obtuse.

PInkyStarfish · 06/08/2025 13:02

I would have a good search and exhaust all
possibilities. Then I’d they were still unaccounted for I would have an imaginary phone call that he can overhear about your home having hidden cameras.

Either that or they just like me to talk about it 🙄

Some madness on here. ‘Why didn’t he replace the boiler in two hours?’ ‘Why didn’t your plumber do it in a day like my three plumbers did?’ ‘Why do you even need to test the boiler?’

‘Why have you jumped to this conclusion?’ Er, I haven’t. I have just mentioned my suspicions. We shall see later if the photo I took proves anything.

This is difficult. I don't think you can do anything but if you had any evidence it could have been reported as it is a sexual crime.

Agree don't use him again and also don't recommend him, although you can't make unsubstantiated allegations.

It's not classed as a sexual crime, just theft.
My neighbours exH stole quite a few pairs of mine, and there was proof of what he'd been doing in them, police would only class it as theft

I like the idea of this in theory but it scares me. The type of man who steals knickers may well be the type of man who gets angry and violent towards women so I’m not going to take that chance, no matter how much I’d like to in theory. Thanks though (and well done re your pills! Wonder why she stole them…?)

How about a note asking for them to be returned and threatening bad reviews rather than police? Possibly that's less likely to cause him to be violent.

At least you'd have the evidence, and you could still leave the bad reviews. But obviously you don't want to wear them again!

Back in the 80's & 90's most of exh's friends were all "tradies" of some description and they straight out told me that they always have a look in the undies drawer.
Edited to add that I don't believe ALL workman are as gross as them, but I would imagine they weren't the only ones.

Well they’ve all got free porn now, no need to look for Mandy’s knickers

Where do you work that people notice your underwear?

Lots of people notice this sort of thing. A woman in our office yesterday wore a black thong under white linen trousers that clung to her bum. Everyone noticed. Think that was her plan to be honest.

With summer dresses in light colours, I would only wear nude, microfibre knickers, it makes them invisible under light clothing. I’d only wear nude or white bras under summer light tops. And black bras under black tops and dresses.

If it was winter and I wore black sheer tights, I’d only wear black, full knickers, not a white thong for example.

Heaven forbid things may have changed in 30-40 years.

I went to school with someone who became an apprentice joiner early 80s.
Saw his name in the local paper at the time.he was done for stealing a woman's underwear and cutting holes in them said underwear was found in his tool box.
Strange boy 🤯

They were having you on.

It's not even that common a kink.

I mean if OP's plumber turns up tomorrow dressed as a vicar clutching some celery then maybe I was wrong.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 06/08/2025 14:31

I think plumbers have become the new cleaners on Mumsnet in terms of proclivities for stealing.

i guess if I thought tradesmen/house were responsible for stealing items I regularly or randomly misplace and I were to follow advice here, I would likely be laying traps to catch those stealing a single sock from a pair, that old jar of decaf for guests I now can't find and that emergency box of matches. And that old comfy bra. Maybe cctv, maybe photographing the entirety of my house, having someone in the house at all times and maybe even logging with 101 🤷‍♀️

BettyBettyBoop · 06/08/2025 10:33

I didn't realise so many Mumsnetters were qualified gas/heating engineers 😂Just because your boiler got changed/fixed in a day, doesn't mean everyone's will. This bloke has been accused of being a cowboy, scammer and a knicker stealing perv all in 3 pages 😂

he'll be a paedophile soon

A covert camera is the most obvious answer here. Just buy one so you have something you can set up for next time. I think there is a high chance he has not only taken your underwear but potentially masturbated in your home too. Im not suggesting I’d actually want to see that happen on film but I would most definitely like to give that evidence to the police.

The most obvious answer here is that OP has misplaced them
