Do you have a second income stream?

MyRootinTootinBaby · 03/08/2025 22:46

Loads of people I know seem to have a second income or a side hustle going on, a
in too if their regular job. Some of them are selling things on Facebook for a scheme like Scentsy, Tropic etc. Some do tutoring outside of their teaching job or for ex teachers. Some have bought a house to rent out out. Some make things for Etsy or bake goods. Some do nails or beauty treatments around their office job - the woman who does my nails and the woman who does my facials both have day jobs and then do these in the evening. As I say, I seem to know of so many people who have a full time job but then something else. Is it the norm now? Do you have a second income?

I work over time, it’s casual and double pay. DSis sells on FB - guesses likely trends - works well at £1000 a month and growing. Other sister runs a party vibe nights out - earns £500 plus a week. DFriend is an artist, and is extremely busy.

Money to be made!!!

RuthChrisSt · 04/08/2025 00:22

Yes. In addition to my full tim job, I work a couple of times a week at night as a maitre d' for a high end restaurant. It's not uncommon for guests to tip to upgrade their table or skip the queue if they're a walk-in.

Katieweasel · 04/08/2025 08:18

Not a side hustle just a second job. Monday to Friday 8am-4pm day job, home, eat, 6pm-10pm evening job.

Fairytalefarm · 04/08/2025 08:20

Yes, I'm a private tutor on top of my teaching job.

Mrsttcno1 · 04/08/2025 08:24

I’m not sure if it’s the norm now generally, of my own circle I do have a handful of friends who have second income streams but mainly that is teachers who also do tutoring/marking exam paper, one who does gardening on the side, one who has a second evening job, or people in these pyramid schemes- digital marketing, perfumes, tiktok shop etc and I know that in reality they really aren’t making much at all from them, they have all said they were really mis-sold as being easy money but actually most haven’t even made their initial investment back.

Blueyshift · 04/08/2025 08:26

Sad state of the world that one job isn't enough.

Marble10 · 04/08/2025 08:32

I have a flat I rent out. Don’t make much though as I have a lovely tenant who has been there years and I’ve never increased the rent. It’s more of a long term asset rather than a second income as I need to keep a float for anything that comes up, eg boiler going wrong or something like that.
I’ve tried selling before but find it hard as I’ve invested in stock but made a loss as selling is hard work. Now I just sell old clothes/toys etc (still a loss 😂)

Helpmeup · 04/08/2025 08:32

Yes I have my normal 9-5 on Monday to Friday and then I also fit cat sitting around that and on weekends

GardenOfTomatoes · 04/08/2025 08:35

I do a bit of mystery shopping. It makes some pocket money but most importantly I get assignments for meals to take DC out without costing anything. I’ve also had a few spa days. I used this list to get started makemoneywithoutajob.com/how-to-become-a-mystery-shopper/

OutHereSisters · 04/08/2025 08:40

DP and I are both academics as our regular job, and we both do consultancy on top of that.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 04/08/2025 08:41

I know a few people silly enough to basically try one stupid pyramid scheme (tropic /forever living,.scentsy.etc) after another. We keep warning DH's sister but she always gets cross with us and then goes quiet when she realises she is losing money

I know heaps of people who are teachers and also do a lot of tutoring on top (which rather contrasts with all the teachers on Mumsnet who claim they are so overworked ...)

I have a friend who works a retail job on Saturdays on top of her Mon-.Friday job, but she does it partly because she loves the.products and gets a really good employee discount

I used to do overtime but I'm not well enough now. I also think family time and leisure time is more important than endlessly working - I learn this the hard way after getting burnout

Kebab98 · 04/08/2025 09:00

no, but I am looking for extra work. Work 38.5 hours FT M-F, looking for an extra 15 hours either nights or early mornings. There is no overtime in my day job.

UnreadyEthel · 04/08/2025 09:17

Yes, I used to be self employed but had a career change 6 years ago. I’m now employed full time but do an evening a week in my old job just to keep my hand in.

PearlsPearl · 04/08/2025 20:09

I'd love a Saturday job in retail or something to bring in extra income. But I job searched a lot and couldn't find anywhere willing to hire someone just for one day a week.

TaborlinTheGreat · 04/08/2025 20:18

No. I teach full time. I don't have time for a side hustle!

overwork · 04/08/2025 20:33

I have an NHS clinical qualification that I do bank shifts for at weekends, and then I work 4 days in my admin job. I wasn’t cut out for FT clinical but I love doing a shift or 2 per month. And it has the added bonus of being well paid so I can pick up shifts to pay for holidays / a newer car etc.

FlyRedRobin · 04/08/2025 20:36

I want to but not sure if it's worth it as I'm going to get taxed 40% for everything on top of my day job.

mrsh2025 · 04/08/2025 21:19

I work ft over 4 days (bar long hours) then work same again over others days

Notmyreality · 04/08/2025 21:22

My side hustle is starting threads on MN about side hustles. I get 1p per thread and I am now millionaire.

PeonyPatch · 04/08/2025 21:23

I used to do overtime in my main job as well as offer private work in the evenings and on weekends occasionally (mental health therapist).

GreenZebraStripes · 04/08/2025 21:25

I have a list of ideas I am working through. Currently on the Vinted selling idea - made £650 in last 6-9 months.

BoredZelda · 04/08/2025 21:26

Nobody is making money selling Scentsy or Tropic.

What do you sell?

MiddleAgedDread · 04/08/2025 21:29

No I don’t!

MarySueSaidBoo · 04/08/2025 21:33

We randomly own a business premises that we rent out. Had it for 20 years or so, and it's our pension fund.
