Does anyone else dislike late summer?

I sometimes feel like the only person who doesn't like mid/late summer. Mid July to mid August is probably my least favourite time of the year. It isn't that I dislike heat: I think it is something to do with the quality of the light. I am often more depressed and anxious around this time of the year. I start to feel a bit more normal around the last week or so of August, and I love September and October. I just wondered if anyone else feels at all similarly.

Hmmm, I don't dislike it, but yeah not my fave time of year, as I feel a wee bit blue that summer is coming to an end. This one's been brilliant, and it will feel a bit sad seeing it go........ Another 6 weeks we could potentially have nice weather though! Gonna pick up mid week again! Grin

Allswellthatendswelll · 03/08/2025 22:47

It always baffles me we still have the summer holidays in August in England. I know it's based on the harvest but they start and finish earlier in Scotland. The nights are really drawing in by the end of August and starting to get autumnal.
I quite like it though. I like the fruit on the trees and the change in the air.

INeedNewShoes · 03/08/2025 22:48

It always feels odd to me that the longest day is 21st June. It feels like by the time we get into August the nights drawing in feels imminent yet the school summer holidays only start the last week of July. It all feels out of kilter.

I actually love September and October so it's not that I'm bothered by summer going it just feels like it's fading just as the kids are in the full swing of the holidays. Scotland have a better academic year I think.

ExercicenformedeZ · 03/08/2025 22:55

Yes, I agree. It does seem oddly arranged.

Yeah, I wonder if the summer holidays for the schools should start like third week in June, and go to the third week in August? Would be 8-9 weeks though. So harder for parents to get childcare/pay for childcare for the younger ones. Would be a long Autumn/winter term too

Harassedmum123 · 04/08/2025 08:39

I agree. It reminds me of harvest festival at school which i didn’t like as it reminded me that the summer was over.
Also wish the school holidays started a couple of weeks early (in England) e.g. early July so that the children could go back to school mid August when the weather worsens and the nights are already drawing in. It would also be nice to have five weeks , not six and have two weeks half term in October instead. Feels so Autumnal today especially with the wind and rain and feels a shame that May and June were so warm and sunny when the children were at school.

alwaysstressed · 04/08/2025 08:43

Im in Scotland and the school holidays for where we are are from June 30th to August 13th this year.
What actually are the dates in England?

Harassedmum123 · 04/08/2025 08:46

My dd’s last day of school was 18th July and she goes back on 4th September so almost 7 weeks off including the training days.

mynameiscalypso · 04/08/2025 08:51

Totally! Although it’s something that I’ve noticed more now I have a child in school. I find it really unsettling. I don’t particularly like spring and autumn and so the feeling that summer is over is not a nice one. It also feels weird that we haven’t been on our ‘summer holidays’ yet. I find it all very disconcerting.

PurpleChrayn · 04/08/2025 08:56

I quite like it. It’s an interesting time in my religion/culture between a period of mourning and our new year, so it’s a time for resolutions and new starts. Plus I’ve always enjoyed the run-up to a new academic year.

Lifeinthepit · 04/08/2025 08:58

Agree. It has a melancholy to it. The shadows and light changes. I've always thought you are just sensing it's Back to School soon.

Denimrules · 04/08/2025 08:59

I prefer it to early summer because its not light so late

BlueOceanFish · 04/08/2025 09:02

I was walking my dog this morning and had this exact thought, I do not like August! It’s like everyone associates it with ‘high’ summer but it’s not - it’s darker and the trees are no longer that vibrant bright green.

Bring on October

Toucanfusingforme · 04/08/2025 09:11

It’s funny, because I grew up in England but lived in Scotland as an adult. I could never get used to the Scottish schools being back in August! I would be listening to Radio 1 doing the August roadshows (I’m that old….) from the beach, and my kids would be back at school, summer ended. Weird. But although I agree August is a bit melancholy, I like the schools going back in September. It’s proper autumn then.

Tortielady · 04/08/2025 09:36

I have very mixed feelings. Summer is my least favourite season, in spite of the fact that I have my birthday in the summer. I don't like sticky nights, the abundance of insects and having to factor in how busy somewhere will be before going there. And I love autumn. I love its colours, the nip in the air, the food and the festivals and holidays of the religion I grew up in (especially New Year and Tabernacles) and the culture I was part of (Harvest Festival is lovely.) As a child who struggled at school, I dreaded the start of the new academic year. As an adult pursuing a PhD, I relish it. Chilly autumn evenings with a bowl of soup and a good book...what could be better?

On the other hand, as much as I don't like summer, I'm prone to SAD and vitamin D deficiency and all the extra sunlight is a boost. So is seeing other people relaxed and at ease - my enjoyment of the colder months is far from universal and UK people who thrive in hot sunny weather really don't get much of it. I'm looking ahead with pleasure, but many people aren't and I'm sorry for them. I can also remember holidays as a child at a point in August when the season was on the turn and it was definitely odd. Maybe the fact that we went to the seaside made it more obvious - you'd be lucky to get through a full week without a single squall.

Berlinlover · 04/08/2025 09:39

I agree there is something sad about summer coming to an end. The most depressing day of the year is when the clocks go back at the end of October.

Oh no, I love Fall Back! I love the dark spookiness of it, and also find it strangely reassuring. Sometimes I think I have reverse SAD as summer makes me so anxious (although I love May and June)

Late summer is September.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/08/2025 22:02

There is such a thing as summer SAD, OP.

I don't like the summer, July and August are the worst, I can't wait for autumn!

slightlydistrac · 04/08/2025 22:04

I like late summer. It feels like everything in the garden and the countryside is breathing a sigh of relief.

ZenNudist · 04/08/2025 22:06

The main reason to be pissed off in August is how shitty the weather can be. Today it was autumnal with driving rain in the morning and warm and sunny this afternoon.

I still think of it as high summer. Summer is June July and August. It will still be warm and summery in September.

No point mourning the loss of summer in August

I’m the same exact I hate May and June. I think August feels miserable as by now I’m fed up and ready for autumn Grin

notevencharging · 04/08/2025 22:17

No, I love it because hay fever has finally cleared up.

Bunnycat101 · 04/08/2025 22:19

It’s not my favourite time of year at all but definitely not my worst.

favourite: March- June (love spring and the better weather, generally not too hot and just pleasant)
next: September to mid October (often nice weather, still get an evening with some light and I like back to school vibe)
then: July- August (associate with fun times but often too hot for me or disappointing if it rains when you are expecting sun)
December- Christmas and all the lights make up for the things I don’t like weather wise.
mid October - November - I hate the nights drawing in. By the time it’s dark
worst January -February - absolutely shit. If I was retired would want to leave the country for these months.

Late summer is September.

I think that the second half of September is a definitely autumn. I agree that early September can count as summer, though.
