Does anyone else dislike late summer?

I sometimes feel like the only person who doesn't like mid/late summer. Mid July to mid August is probably my least favourite time of the year. It isn't that I dislike heat: I think it is something to do with the quality of the light. I am often more depressed and anxious around this time of the year. I start to feel a bit more normal around the last week or so of August, and I love September and October. I just wondered if anyone else feels at all similarly.

The main reason to be pissed off in August is how shitty the weather can be. Today it was autumnal with driving rain in the morning and warm and sunny this afternoon.

I still think of it as high summer. Summer is June July and August. It will still be warm and summery in September.

No point mourning the loss of summer in August

In my case, I'm not really mourning the loss of summer. I just feel the energy is off, I can't really explain it.

I wonder if it's to do with being reminded of when you were a child and knowing that going back to school was getting closer? Some people hate Sunday nights for the same reason.

The weather kind of broke after the kids finished school. I've spent today on holiday in lashing rain after all the summer holiday weather in July 😫 It's been better than the last few years though and it's still light enough to be on the beach into the evening. It's later August when it's noticeably dark by 8 that is depressing. Our physical and mental health as a family is so much better with warmth and daylight, we are just not cut out for winter.

I feel as if early summer is full of promise and optimism, but late summer is full of foreboding. Everything seems overripe, overgrown, over done. Dark decaying green rather than spring fresh.

Good to know it’s not just me! I have been reflecting on this for the last few days. As others have noted, to me it does feel very melancholy and I have been feeling a bit down. There is definitely a different light and smell compared to July.

Interesting. I read a local resident saying there were some signs of Autumn this year that aren’t normally evident until later on. Berries being out early etc..

I don’t think I’ve ever been so aware of the evenings drawing in but I have a dog now so am out in the evenings more so that’s probably why.

I find the energy of August heavy. It's often the wettest and dullest of the summer months and the leaves in the garden/ nature are a darker shade of green. My garden struggles with colour as many perennials have a lull in rounds of flowering between early summer and late summer. My roses have lots of buds, but are probably about 10 days from blooming again and breaking up the green. I've put some pots of annuals in to break the green up, but it's still best with some sunshine to make them vibrant.

It's often awkwardly muggy with little freshness.

I prefer the energy of September and October. I'm.also institutionalised by the rythum of school years.

November and January can both just get in the bin. October, December, February would give enough winter to let nature reset and balance the summer months.
