Podcast recommendations- Will I ever find anything as good as S-Town?

On the hunt for a new podcast I can get stuck into.
Something true maybe crime or mystery, thriller, unsolved, twists and turns. Basically I’m in search of something as gripping as S-Town.
I loved Serial, Hoaxed, west cork podcast, The Witness, Stuff you should know. So anything along those lines, I really felling like I’m missing out on some big ones! Any recs welcome!

Black Hands - a family killing in New Zealand
The Ballad of Billy Balls - 1980s punk New York death but also more than that in terms of looking at grief, family dynamics
The Lady Vanishes - so many episodes, but you can skip some of the catch-up ones
Flesh and Code - not a mystery, but true story looking at the phenomenon of people falling in love with their AI companions
Heavyweight - each episode looks at a minor mystery in someone’s life and tries to track down the answer. It’s phenomenal the depths they go to to find the answers.

I'd like to know if there's a platform which is free to listen to it on .

Thanks for all the replies everyone! So much to get through now! I’m rubbish at searching podcasts so it’s great to have a list! 🤩

I've just started listening to S town on Pocket cast.
Will only be able to get first 2 episodes without subscribing to some thing.
Can anyone recommend a service ( I don't even know the term, is it platform? ) that is good value and gives wide access?
I currently just use BBC sounds.

Ah I just looked it up again on Apple Podcasts and you have to subscribe after 2 episodes that’s disappointing! When I listened to it first a few years ago I could listen for free 🤨 but I must say it’s so good that I would sign up if I was to listen again!

Your own back yard and In the Dark (season 2 in particular) are both some of the best out there!

On about episode 4 of your own back yard, really enjoying it so far! Thank you 🤩

Stalked is amazing and on BBC Sounds. Carole Cadwalladr is a fantastic investigative journalist and the story is wild. I also really enjoyed a BBC World Service podcast series called Finding Mr Fox. That might have been the same journo or Sam Poling, I can’t recall.

I’d not heard of the one you mentioned so am off to check that out - thanks.

NutellaEllaElla · 03/08/2025 19:15

Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder - was AMAZING. Much better than S-Town.

Thanks all

Who Killed Emma is very good.

I enjoyed S Town and the Serial podcasts. I’m also rubbish at searching for new things to listen to so will have to look a few more of these up

Amazing! You won’t be disappointed. This one and In the Dark actually change the course of the investigations, which is why I think they’re so good. They don’t just tell the story, they change it….

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 04/08/2025 13:53

Missing Niamh which is a casefiles presents podcast is also very good.

Up and vanished - probably the best of them all

Delve - particularly distressing content, but really sensitively covered

The teacher's pet

Death in ice valley

Guilt - all series

Mumteedum · 05/08/2025 04:46

This is amazing and thoughtful. Bible John

I am not Nicholas was amazing too. There was a TV documentary of it but podcast was better.

Does the 'presenter' improve as this podcast progresses? It sounds like an AI voice and it's so difficult to listen to.

Just came back to this thread to recommend Ghost Story - it’s a Wondery podcast. Absolutely brilliant researching of a family mystery - gripping, warm and touching.
(it’s not a horror/thriller type thing at all, which could be misconstrued from the title)

Looks good but needs a subscription?

A couple more recommendations:
Root of Evil, about the Black Dahlia murder. It is really dark though, be warned.
Sea of Lies, which I’m about 3 episodes in to. A dead body is found at sea, tracks who it is (won’t say more as spoilers) .

Also listened to Bone Valley, murder of a young woman in the 1980s. I didn’t finish it, just found it incredibly sad and her husband was too dodgy for me to get behind.
