I was supermarket shopping today and went to pick up a product I always buy to discover it has increased in price by a ridiculous amount and I just thought.
Nah. It can stay there. This list is now growing. Anyone else deciding to just leave products on the shelf because they're not worth the money anymore?
I did it in Costa. I went in for a cappuccino and thought Nah! I'm not paying that anymore and walked out.

I think it's inflation and also cheap credit is no longer available, a triple whammy of price increases, higher mortgages ( less cash available) and cheap credit no longer being so available with lender responsibility being under the spotlight and irresponsible lending claims

Many people lived on cheap credit and the can was kicked down the road.
To my mind many people really couldn't afford all those coffees /subscriptions/ fresh flowers every week in the first place and the bubble has burst

Theres loads of cheap
credit still! Interest rates went down recently. Cars are all on loans,

Costs of production have shot up - rents for premises, goods costs, labour costs. It’s just really expensive to make things.

This is wealth inequality kicks in. The rich (of which their are a fair few) are supporting certain sectors whereas the increasingly growing poor can’t afford to live as they once did.
Much easier to produce and sell when theres a larger marketplace who can afford your goods.

Yes. I buy a lot less crap though so every cloud I guess!

Oh yes the yoghurts. I like the cadburys chocolate deserts, the ones with a few buttons in one side you shake in. Obviously they are smaller these days but the price has shot up in multiple steps. They were 60p, then 80p, then 90p….but you could normally buy 2 for £1.50. That offer seems to have stopped.

Sainsburys had a 4 pack which had a nectar price of I think £2.50, maybe £2.70. It’s off the nectar offer as of this week and £3.75 for 4. First time in years I haven’t got any.

gone up by more than 33% in a week!

We buy the Aldi version £2.69 for a pack of 4 (2 flake and 2 buttons)

You can make your own pizza base for pennies. It’s just flour, oll, yeast sachet. Roll them out and bake in oven. Freeze and then you can rebake whenever. A can of chopped tomatoes, stick blender and a pinch of Italian herbs. Ball of mozzarella. Alternatively butter plus garlic purée for garlic pizza bread.. Drizxle of oil and seasoning and have it with soup.

Yeah I know but our local shop reduces baguettes to 10p and its nice and crunchy when made into pizzas.

The mental gymnastics you have to do in the supermarket now is exhausting! Particularly when trying to work out the best value of toilet roll, when the packs all come in different sizes and the rolls themselves can be normal or ‘longer rolls’ (or those which have the extra large tube for concealed shrinkflation - I see you), and the price tickets don’t give a fair comparison, eg one will say “£1 per roll” and another will say “£0.05 per sheet”. It’s just exhausting.

I do always giggle somewhat at Tesco, when I see the shelf price tickets in their toilet roll aisle.

They abbreviate 'sheets', so it now gives the price "per sht" Grin

I find branded stuff has a lot more sugar and fat. Own brands are usually fine, it's just that your taste buds need to adjust because they don't have the same levels of sugar and fat!

last time I had a cake in Costa I wish I hadn't bothered.

shampoo and conditioner is crazy I was really shocked last time I looked. I switched to shampoo bars a while back.

Theteenandme · 03/08/2025 14:46

Good point about brand loyalty. I have very little these days!

Also true about shopping at multiple places. I used to just get everything from 1 or 2 shops because it was easier. Now, the financial payoff means it is worth my time to visit numerous shops eg Savers for shampoo, B&M for antibac spray etc rather than just throw it all in the Treco trolly.

In 2018 the BOE base rate was 0.5%
Now it's 4.25%

Its far more expensive to borrow, lenders are far more cautious due to ongoing affordability claims and lending rules.

Many just ran up CC then whacked on their mortgages for coffees, nails, flowers, spa weekends
Cheap and easy.
Persistent debt is now an issue-CC lenders and banks are able to demand full repayment
ODs are hideously expensive if unauthorised.

It's really not cheap to borrow now

Ps forgot student loans have gone up

This is unfortunately the reality of putting up the National Minimum Wage. The only way companies can pay for it (especially smaller companies) is to increase prices.

Marks and Spencer’s is now getting ridiculous with their pricing. I get very few things there now. Lamb shoulder was £5.95 a couple of years ago, now it’s around £9. All of their ready made meals have really jumped in price.

I was in M&S just now and saw they had some yellow stickered things (lasagne, fish pie etc) so thought I might get something for tonight. Until I saw the yellow sticker prices were still £5!! For one person ready meals!

To the person with Heinz brand loyalty - the Tesco reduced sugar beans are nicer than Heinz!

Ideally, we should have a much higher NMW, but then a considerably lower tax rate, as we wouldn't have the need for the state to subsidise artificially low wages for working people.

the80sweregreat · 03/08/2025 16:05

Savers is still the best for toothpaste and floss, cleaning things. Always cheaper than the supermarket.

Yep. Could not bring myself to pay £2.50 for a pack of chocolate digestives today

Waitrose and M&S chocolate digestives are cheaper and just as good

I now cook more from scratch eg cakes whereas I used to buy and limit takeaways to once every 6 weeks from good quality more expensive place instead of cheaper mediocre quality.
