I was supermarket shopping today and went to pick up a product I always buy to discover it has increased in price by a ridiculous amount and I just thought.
Nah. It can stay there. This list is now growing. Anyone else deciding to just leave products on the shelf because they're not worth the money anymore?
I did it in Costa. I went in for a cappuccino and thought Nah! I'm not paying that anymore and walked out.

Definitely noticing the difference. We don’t have lamb or beef anymore unless it’s mince.
I also noticed that a packet of mcvities chocolate digestive was £3.50 in Sainsbury’s, I know it’s a brand but they always used to be around the £1 mark - couldn’t fathom paying that much.

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 01/08/2025 23:01

YANBU

My kids love these blocks of chocolate bars from Lidl. Used to be 79p. Now £1.29. No way am I buying that when I can get them a premium brand for cheaper

QueenOfHiraeth · 01/08/2025 23:09

I have always loved Haagen-Dazs ice cream and we have always had a tub or two in the freezer for many years but no more!
It used to be £3.75ish a tub and I remember thinking that once it hit £4 that would be it. It is now £5.75 a tub!

Happily I found a very nice rolled shoulder of Lamb in Waitrose this evening for £21, reduced from £29.

We stock up every Easter think I have 12 legs of lamb in the garage freezer £15 each!

Yep, Heinz main products are fine, but they're nowhere near as good as cheaper brands and own-brands.

Like so many companies, they're purely selling the brand and not actual better quality.

Kraft Heinz have seen sales drop, They are being squeezed from other brands positioning themselves as a premium often healthier option and white label / own brand as consumers step down a level to cut costs.

Apparently they are dividing up the business to help it grow again.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/08/2025 09:41

What gets me is the likes of Aldi or Lidl just aren’t cheap anymore

i shop once a fortnight every time I went to Aldi things had gone up 10/20/30p!

i was working one weekend and couldn’t be bothered to shop at Aldi afterwards so thought I’d do a comparison shop at Asda buying pretty much the same stuff and it was exactly the same price as Aldi so I’ve decided I’ll stick with the convenience of having my shopping delivered while it’s the same price as Aldi

It’s not just the prices things are getting so much smaller!!!!! A snickers was never the size of a snickers today.

Snickers are all Dh and l talk about! If you cut one in half it’s smaller than a treat size one used to be.

And as for crisps. Heres a bag of fresh air

AnchorWHAT · 02/08/2025 10:17

What annoys me more than the constant price rises is the inconsistency, eg my favourite wine is sometimes £7.50 then the next week its £9.00 how? I wait until it’s the lower price when sometimes it is also on the 25% off for 6 and stock up.
just looked on Sainsbury's and its now £9.50 wtf!!!

Sundaybananas · 02/08/2025 10:39

I guess the thing is that the headline rate of inflation is 4.5% but a lot of us are comparing things to “pre-covid”.

UK inflation between 2019 and now is nearly 30% (28.39%) based on CPI.

By comparison, inflation over the previous 5 year period was only 8%

I often wonder if we will see fewer coffee shops as the prices are coming to the point where people don't bother. I very rarely purchase coffee outside the house - the investment in a Contigo travel mug was one of my better investments in the last six months. Expensive but you get back investment after 4 coffees from a chain.

I think they will. The number seemed to take off over the last few years, and a lot of people saw them as a nice treat that doesn't cost all that much as an occasional thing.

However, many got into the habit of having them every day (sometimes multiple times) and then the penny dropped just how much they were spending each month.

It doesn't help that the combined monthly cost of a daily monthly takeaway coffee is the first thing that money-saving advisers always draw attention to as an example of how much it all costs. Then you get every charity and subscription service asking people to spend/give "just the price of a daily coffee" - suggesting that it will replace it.

Just as thousands of pubs close each year, coffee shops surely can't be far behind.

I don’t know I spend a lot of time in coffee shops and they seem really busy. I tend to think of it as renting a table for an hour but my local Costa has 8 staff working flat out most days ( busy drive thru).

pecanpiee · 02/08/2025 22:17

Bloody toilet roll is so expensive. I Will always get to the supermarket own brand for that, I’m not paying any more than is necessary for toilet roll.

FNDandme · 02/08/2025 22:35

Agree the price of shopping even basics is ridiculous now. We do c&c for the shopping and what used to be 5/6 bags is now 2/3 for more than the cost of the 5/6. Dropped to own brand with a lot of things and rarely have meat or chicken. I feel we are living on pasta which isn’t great 🥴

TaborlinTheGreat · 02/08/2025 22:45

No, because I shop in Aldi and think most brands aren't any better than own brand.

Andbegin · 02/08/2025 22:51

I think things were very cheap for a very long time. It’s a shock that prices are now high and go up more frequently.

I would imagine people will have to stop
eating and drinking out soon. Goodness knows what the high streets will look like then.

I took my mum out for her 80th birthday with her two friends to a nice pub. They had a “small plate” and a coffee each and it came to £68. My mum wanted to treat everyone and I think she assumed a coffee and a sandwich might be a tenner or so. Luckily I had paid most of it and for once we didn’t do “wallet wars” as she was shocked at the cost.

I don't understand how Heinz is still trading..... I haven't bought a single one of their products for a good few years now, in fact I hardly buy any brands anymore. Mince is my latest shocker, feels like that's doubled in price over night.

I was just going to say Heinz they are just taking the biscuit with the price of their products. I just buy own brand sauces. Marks and Spencers do really good beans for half the prize of Heinz.

I went to buy a leg of lamb today in Sainsbury’s.

FORTY TWO POUNDS!!!!! £42!!!!!!!

I left it. The buggers can have chicken instead.

I love lamb but it’s now ridiculously expensive. I don’t know why, there’s literally hundreds of sheep in the fields around here.

frecklejuice · 02/08/2025 23:08

Prawns! Nearly £7 a pack in Sainsbury’s yesterday.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/08/2025 23:17

Hmm. Leg of lamb £42 (that's not bad actually for full price).

However, I recall paying £7 in June 1982 (first dinner party aged 21). The Bank of England inflation checker puts that £7 at £27.04 now.

I guess at Easter, legs of lamb are about £17 to £20, so one can stock up then.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/08/2025 23:22

Hmm. I bought some Lidl own brand once. It was very cheap compared to supermarket (premium) own. It was rougher than Izal. Izal might have been hard, crispy and horrid, but it wasn't rough. OK, it didn't encourage me to use the school loos but it was just non absorbent and ineffective rather than having the brillo pad/wire wool effect.

OSTMusTisNT · 02/08/2025 23:22

Anything linked to a supermarket meal deal if you only want a bag of crisps. £1.20 for a bag of Hula Hoops 😱.

Tesco really annoy me when they increase prices to then put the product on special offer a few weeks later.

DH likes the occasion Bovril and that's went up to nearly £5 a jar in most places apart from Home Bargains.

FreddysFingers · 02/08/2025 23:50

Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner!

£6 a pop in Tesco - I don't mind spending on professional products, but for a drugstore product I feel it's ridiculous.

I usually go to Savers for toiletries anyway, they're far more reasonable.

I love Aldi products, especially the dupes of expensive brands they do - they're really rather good for the price!

Tinytigertail · 02/08/2025 23:58

One slice of toast with half an avocado and some chillis plus a mint tea coat me £16 this morning..I'll make it at home in future!!
