Would you say anything if your 6yo neighbour was wearing a bikini that said “Beach Babe”?

Just wondering what others think really. I was sitting in the garden yesterday and my neighbour’s DD (about 6 I’d guess?) was out playing in one of those little paddling pools wearing a pink bikini. Nothing wrong with that at all except it had “BEACH BABE” written across the top in big sparkly letters.

I don’t know why but it made me feel a bit uncomfortable. It just seemed… a bit grown-up? Maybe I’m overthinking but I can’t imagine putting something like that on a child.

I know people will say it’s just words and kids don’t know what it means but doesn’t that make it worse? That the adults do?

Would you say anything in this situation or just keep out of it?

Keep out of it OP!

RimTimTagiDim · 31/07/2025 14:05

You're mad to think of saying anything. What would it achieve?

I would feel sorry for the girl though.

SparklyGlitterballs · 31/07/2025 14:06

I wouldn't personally have dressed my DDs in something like that when young, but I'd keep out of this as it's really none of your business.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 31/07/2025 14:08

Does that phrase mean something inappropriate? I don't get the issue at all.

If I'm missing something and you have a concern, find out which retailer sold it and send a complaint there, leave your neighbours alone.

titchy · 31/07/2025 14:08

Say anything to who? Her parents? Do you not think they know the contents of their child’s wardrobe?

MidnightMeltdown · 31/07/2025 14:08

None of your business how other people choose to bring up their children. Would you like it if your neighbour was telling you what your child should be allowed to wear?

doodleschnoodle · 31/07/2025 14:08

Assuming her parents can read, they know what it says. I can’t think why you would say anything.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/07/2025 14:09

I’d be silently disapproving - I wouldn’t say anything.

Mind your own business

Plus everyone’s criteria for what is acceptable and appropriate is different. Imagine if you had a neighbour telling you that your child should be covering their legs? Or wearing a head scarf? It’s not for you to decide what is appropriate for someone else’s child.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2025 14:12

I would not. I am assuming it is not of the style that many 26 year olds would wear.

Ineedanewsofa · 31/07/2025 14:12

Like, what would you say? What actual words would you use? Type them here and see if you still think it’s a good idea to speak them out loud…

TenderChicken · 31/07/2025 14:13

I think "babe" in this instance could genuinely be read as baby, rather than sexy woman.

HiRen · 31/07/2025 14:14

Absolutely grim, but I’d never say anything

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 31/07/2025 14:15

Definitely tell her your opinion. Do let us know how it goes.

Culturedk · 31/07/2025 14:16

Thanks everyone – I’m not planning to say anything, don’t worry! It just really jumped out at me and I was curious if others would feel the same. I wouldn’t want to upset anyone or come across as judging – I genuinely was just a bit taken aback by the wording.

I think maybe I am overthinking it, but it did make me feel uneasy in a way I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Appreciate the reality check!

@Culturedk I don’t see an issue with it, I’d only say something if she had it tattooed on her bare bum and was sticking her bum in your window.

Yeah I thought the same.

Plus, she's in her own back garden - keep your nose out!!! Me and my cousins would regularly be running round naked during the summer holidays in my grans back garden with the hose pipe and paddling pool when we were little.

I think if I was the child's mum I would feel more uneasy about the fact my NDN is peering over my garden wall and commenting on what my child is wearing.

TheGoldFox · 31/07/2025 14:44

Erm no?

mindutopia · 31/07/2025 14:44

Now I wouldn’t put my 6 year old in a bikini, my 12 year old is not allowed to wear one, though in the garden, it’s no different than running around in your pants which is fine in private.

But to me, ‘beach babe’ means someone who loves the beach. Which I guess is a perfectly okay thing and not sexual in any way. If it said ‘sexy’ or ‘sexy babe’ or ‘hot babe’ or similar, yes, that seems inappropriate but surely the parents wouldn’t exactly be unaware of what it said.

Maddy70 · 31/07/2025 14:45

She is in fact a babe ... Far more than a young lady would be. You are being daft
