Do your teens swear af you?

DD, 16, is generally a good kid. She works hard at school, has hobbies and a part-time job and a very active social life - parties/trips away with friends.

She’s just finished her GCSEs and I’m finding her behaviour at home increasingly challenging, it is just us and she’s estranged from her dad so we don’t get much of a break from her.

She’s not openly hostile but she often doesn’t do her small list of chores despite saying they are done when asked. They are not done. Eg dishwasher not emptied etc.

And, worse imo, she’s started swearing at me. Not all the time but she’s told me to fuck off and ‘oh look she doesn’t fucking answer’ that kind of thing. I find this absolutely gobsmacking that she has the audacity to do this when; for example, I’d picked her and her friends up from a party at 1am at the weekend.

So, do you have a zero tolerance approach to swearing? I’ve told her that she won’t be allowed to attend the next thing she is looking forward to next time she does it.

I've never sworn at either of my parents. I would never even swear in front of my Mum because I know she doesn't like it.

There's a difference between swearing in conversation and swearing at someone. Swearing at you is definitely not OK.

No. My teens sometimes swore around me, and never, ever at me!

I have a 23 year old son and a 16 year old step daughter. They swear around me.. Example being if they’re running late they might mutter “where are my fucking door keys” They would never swear at me though, I’d go mental.

ObliviousCoalmine · 30/07/2025 11:04

No. She might occasionally swear in a comedic way ‘at’ me but not with actual negative intention.

My older teens are quite sweary, the girl more than the boy will swear to me in conversation but never at me. We've always had quite firm boundaries with them, so they are very respectful.

We are, unfortunately quite a sweary family. Ds19 swears A LOT and a lot more than I would like, but has never sworn at me.
Ds16 doesn't swear as much, but did tell me to fuck off once. I went absolutely ballistic and he's never done it since. Ds1 was horrified too.
There's a big difference IMO between swearing at someone and just swearing.
