It’s events like this that keep churches going. Delays happen. I can’t imagine choirs will be rushing to hire there in the future.

mumda · 27/07/2025 15:21

That was completely outrageous for him to make a bigger show of himself then the show was making of itself!

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 27/07/2025 15:23

The bishop was merely following scripture, as he should. Luke 23:12 records the words of the saviour Jesus at the gathering of the minstrels at the Feast of Tabernacles:

“Put a sock in it and go home. You’re all tone deaf. I didn’t get immaculately conceived to have to listen to dreadful renditions of Nazarene pop classics at 10 o’clock at night. Hop it.”

The word of the Lord.

@slightlydistrac do you agree the church belongs to the Bishop then? and is "his house" - because that is what he said. I am an atheist but I hire the local baptist church for noisy toddler music sessions and ASD music sessions. They are very much "this is a community space and does not belong to us" which is, I thought, the ethos of the Christian church.

I'm guessing your toddler and ASD music sessions are not held quite so late in the evening?

Besides, we're missing the point here. People need to conduct themselves properly in a place of worship (or other building connected to it) whatever the religion; be considerate towards the hirer and local residents, and not make a noisy nuisance of themselves.

I refer you to the recent Bangor Cathedral scandal. Can't keep their own/Gods house in order.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 27/07/2025 15:34

His House? His House? What about Ted Neely? Did he die in vain?
And I think we can all agree, based on my username, I know what I'm talking about...
Bishop Johnathan Baker is a very naughty boy...

Having managed a venue where there were people living there, it could be a nightmare with concerts. The thought tended to be "I'm booked to be out at 10, so it doesn't matter if we run a weenie bit over" which often would mean finishing at 10:20. But that's the concert. Then there's a speech, and "oh we'll just give you one more" and then everyone staying behind to chat, and the clearing up etc.
And at half-eleven, having just got everyone out when someone realises they've lost their car keys/car won't start/just need the toilet/have you seen their glasses etc and banging on the door to get back in.
And the caretaker has to be up at 5:30am the next day for the people that day.

And if you try being nice and saying "are you nearly finishing as you only booked to 10:30?" you'll always be told that it's the "last song" or "nearly done." Amazing how often the last song can run over 10 minutes.

Then when they get the bill with an extra hour they're ever so indignant because it wasn't their fault. It never is, and nor did they break that window even though you have it on CCTV....

So I have some sympathy with him doing it. I do think he handled it badly, however they may have had form.

Edited to add: And you're the one dealing with the complaints from the residents when they're woken up by the concert leaving too.

SriouslyWhutNow · 27/07/2025 16:34

I've watched the video. He doesn't maybe express himself as eloquently as he might, but presumably he's tired and wants to go to bed and it's overrun its time slot. The people at the concert seem to be being intentionally antagonistic and making as much noise as possible, especially after being asked to leave quietly by the woman. I'm on team bishop.
I hope he has some sort of control over who books the venue so he can bar them from future bookings. I wouldn't want them back after being asked by two people to leave quietly and still not only insisting on playing one more song but also the clapping and stomping from the very amateur singers and the audience. Really childish.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/07/2025 16:44

Curfew is curfew. If an event goes on past the predetermined time to switch off, they could lose their licence for performances and therefore there would be no income at all. So the PA gets switched off, stage lights get switched off and people are told to go home. It doesn't matter whether it's Durham Cathedral or The Black Heart in Camden, Voces8 or Pig Destroyer, the moment curfew is passed, even if it's mid-song, everything stops.

No sympathy with the whingeing knobs who think that laws don't apply to them.

scalt · 27/07/2025 16:51

It reminds me of that story about a police officer barging into a church, and standing at the lectern, to tell everyone there that they’d be arrested if they didn’t get out of there, during the Covid madness.

Now, if only someone had done that in Downing Street….

Mind you, when the student house next to us was having an all night drunken party, I so wanted to charge in and switch their electricity off.

Just because I'm being picky. Jesus was the miraculous conception, Mary was the immaculate conception.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 17:28

How many 10pm curfews do you know? The concert was due to start at 8pm. It couldn’t have run that much over because the musicians are only contracted for a certain time.

Be as picky as you like. I’m grateful for the correction! Thank you. 👍

Me? Plenty. Local venues (including churches) are in residential areas, so 10pm is the normal curfew time for amplified music.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 27/07/2025 12:00

I really wish there was more info on overran their booking time so if it was to 9pm and he gave them an extra hour I’d I’d have a lot more sympathy than if it was to 10pm and he kicked them out on the dot.

That said many places do. I’ve been to a few weddings I’ve been to hsve wrapped up quite abruptly at 10:45 as the booking is to 11pm and that means you are all out by 11 not just finishing.

I saw a Tiktok the choir had made, they said they had the hall booked til 11, they'd anticipated finishing at 10 and he interrupted them singing their last song at 10.07 to kick them out.

ChurchDrudge · 27/07/2025 18:10

This is a central london location not a residential area.

10pm is early for a curfew in any town centre on a Saturday night.
I sing in a london choir that hires churches for concerts and I work at a church that is hired out for concerts and this looks like a pretty routine hiring to me.

The quality of the music is neither here nor there although the amplification might have been different if it were more of a classical choir.

Anyway, he's the misogynist in chief of the church of england so I'm rather delighted he's made such a fool of himself! He really could have handled this more sensitively. And then he left it to a middle-aged woman to clear up his mess. Arse.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 18:13

There is no way on earth they would have had a scheduled 8pm start time if there was a strict 10pm curfew.

itcwill be no skin off their nose. They regularly perform at well known London concert venues such as the Actor’s Church. They put on plays, concerts, dance events etc etc they are well known. Plenty of venues will be happy to accommodate them.

Really? When Underworld's Friday and Saturday night curfew is 10pm and Koko's Friday is 10pm (they have a separate later one for a limited number of club nights)? And every cathedral gig I've ever teched at across the UK with various bands has been a 10pm hard curfew?

Shepherd's Bush Empire tends to have 11pm curfew, but odds are you'll be stranded if you're still there at that time.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 18:42

Yes, really.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 18:44

And if there was a hard curfew it would be the house manager who ordered the button to be pressed so to speak. In conversation with the stage manager.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 18:47

My son knows people who were playing. I’ll see if he knows anything.

ChurchDrudge · 27/07/2025 18:50

They're not bands though, it's a choir, so they shouldn't be so loud.

UltraHorse · 27/07/2025 18:51

The Bishop sounds like Bishops often are arrogant out of touch no basic understanding of normal people

ChurchDrudge · 27/07/2025 18:52

Our church (fairly close to St Andrew's) would expect everyone to be out by 11.

Comefromaway · 27/07/2025 18:53

If it was a 10pm curfew they’d have started at 7pm or 7.30pm.
