I just got attacked by two cats

I am so shaken and am wondering what people would do in my situation.

I’ve just been out walking my dog, on her leash. A couple of streets away from our house, we saw a cat sitting on the pavement. It walked towards us and then turned around and disappeared into a drive. As we passed the drive the cat jumped out from under the car and attached itself to my dog’s face. I tried to go in between them and get the cat off when a second cat shot out from under the car and also went for my dog and my legs. We managed to move about a meter but the cats wouldn’t let go of my dog and I got knocked to the ground. They then kept attacking both me and my dog. I didn’t know what to do at all. I got 5 cats myself and have never seen such aggression. There was nobody on the street to help us. Eventually I managed to get up and we ran away.

As we turned the corner I saw two girls walking their dog. I told them not to turn into that road and explained what happened. They described what the cats looked like and said similar had happened to them on a previous walk. They said in their case the cats had been lurking hidden in a hedge and jumped out and attacked as they walked past.

I’m home now and still shaken. My dog has a small bite on her chest. I have a scrapped elbow and buttock and my shoulder is sore.

I’m home alone at the moment. I feel like an idiot being so upset about being attacked by cats. My dog, a very docile lab, is a bit shocked too.

My dog was attacked under very similar circumstances. As others have said, please keep an eye on bites; both my mother and MIL ended up being admitted for IV antibiotics after cat bites.

ClaredeBear · 26/07/2025 19:38

To all those doubting this story, I’ve had the same experience with domestic cats (edit) and apparently the cat/s had form. My dog was simply walking down the street on a lead.

Your dog must’ve scared them. Normal tabby cats don't randomly attack dogs on walks and knock humans to the floor.

Why is your username attackcats? Odd.

I have no idea what your agenda is.

I have obviously name changed for this post as I live in a fairly small town and don’t want everyone knowing my usual user name. My post is fairly outing as I don’t suspect many Scottish nurses with 5 cats and a dog got attacked by two cats today. 🙄

I remember a programme years ago about bad pets and one family had a cat that wouldn't allow them into their living room. It would hide, pounce & attack if they entered. It was psycho!

cremedelacraps · 26/07/2025 19:46

My puppy was attacked by a random cat that came into our house. She needed stitches....

That’s even more outrageous.

IsItTheBlackOneOrTheRedOne · 26/07/2025 19:53

This happened to me and my small fluffy on a walk once, though only one cat. It was so unnerving as the cat just would not give up and I ended up having to kick it quite hard 😭

I’m sorry it happened to you OP, I hope you’re both ok Daffodil

Hope you and doggo are ok. Domestic cats DO behave like this. Years ago I was walking home,in the next road to where we lived. I had youngest ds in a pram and oldest DS 6 was walking next to me. Collie on a lead. There was an old cottage and 2 Siamese cats, sitting on the step,as we walked past, the whole of the cats eyes went red, like something out of a horror. They flew out, scratching and biting my 6 year old,who was screaming his head off, Im trying to get them off, while holding onto the pram, we're at the top of the hill. There was a pub nearby being refitted, the builders heard my son screaming, ran over to help. Chased the cats off.we and a cat of our own as well as the dog. They tore DSs tracksuit to pieces. I went round showed the tracksuit to the cats owners, they said the cats didn't like us walking by!! They weren't interested,my poor ds became a nervous wreck

Of course their eyes did not go entirely red 😆

I’m afraid that sometimes they do, with no provocation other than the dog walking past minding its own business

Tothink · 26/07/2025 20:00

For those saying that this is unheard of for your typical house cat, I’ve experienced similar! It was a long time ago, probably around 10 years ago now.. I was walking home from work and a cat appeared (on a residential street) and just pounced on my leg, it didn’t attach itself thank goodness so I bloody legged it and luckily that was that. But by memory I think it pounced twice at me before I started running. It had clear intentions of attacking me!! I was very shaken. Hope you and your dog are ok OP. I would report it, just like somebody would if it was a dog attacking people. They can cause a lot of harm and are dangerous to the public.

CriticalOverthinking · 26/07/2025 20:10

I’d knock on the owners door and let them know, then they can’t claim ignorance and get the cats to the vet to check if there is anything underlying. If it’s new or recent behaviour it could be illness. Anyone else who’s been on the receiving end shouldn’t same and report to whoever you report this to.

poor dog though, I have a very docile, young lab and a grumpy old cat. No aggression from either but a couple of hisses and swipes from the cat put the pup in her place quickly, an actual attack from unknown cats must have been terrifying for your girl.

My large sheepdog-type dog and I were walking along the pavement a few years ago and passing a front garden with 2 gates linked by a semicircular path in the front garden. A fluffy white cat was behind the first gate, took one look at us and ran as fast as it could on the path round to the second gate to leap out and attack my very surprised dog, who, being a Greek dog, was used to living peacefully with cat neighbours. A passerby was amazed by the whole episode. The cul de sac I live in is currently visited by another, larger white tom cat, who only likes men but will sometimes approach women quietly and then suddenly attack their legs and bite them out of the blue. He also terrorises other cats. If I find him in my garden I don't try to scare him out of it, as he won't leave but he might well go for me.

Tuxeda · 26/07/2025 20:23

Poor dog! Just came on to say, my DD is a vet and goes to A & E if she gets bitten by a cat. Their fangs inject bacteria into the wound. My husband was bitten by a cat she was looking after. He was reluctant to go to A & E, he did so but even so his whole lower arm was swollen. The nurse told him to come back if his arm turned black!

DD and her colleagues tried to rehome a vicious cat who was kept in a cage because she attacked her owner. It was crazy and just went for people. Eventually it went to a specialist rehoming centre and I understand ended up on a farm.

Nannyfannybanny · 26/07/2025 20:26

I can assure you that the cats eyes did look entirely red, from the normal blue. I asked my ds when I posted on here,if he remembers the attack,he was 6, he's now 47 and he remembers it exactly as I do. No one has mentioned cat scratch fever.

Domestic cats definitely are capable of this, I've seen my own cat attack a fox who had come into our garden, he had it on the floor and was biting its throat until I got the hose out. This is the same sweet little fluff ball that curls up on my lap and will meow and bat his eyes at me for treats. They are predators.

My cat scares the vet so much he won’t hold her down to give her a jab. DH has to do it. Despite said vet charging a bloody arm and a leg!

tothelefttotheleft · 26/07/2025 20:27

Someone I know got blood poisoning from a cat scratch. Make sure you are careful.

Sometimeswinning · 26/07/2025 20:34

My cat would do have done the same. Get in there first. Cats are vicious little buggers. They can cause an infection. Kill a bird, mouse.

What they can’t do is rip out your throat and kill a human. Best advice I can give is don’t walk that way or take a water spray.

dollyblue01 · 26/07/2025 20:34

Hope your ok, that sounds awful, me and my dog got chased quite a distance by a big ginger tom cat , I had a bottle of water so poured it over the cat and it soon ran away, sorry to hear what’s happened , but definitely take a bottle of water with you next time just incase as the one that chased us goes around the whole neighbourhood. Hope you and your dog are feeling better soon x

HeyDougie · 26/07/2025 20:38

I find this quite shocking. I think so many people have Bengal cats and Norwegian
forest cats this sort of behaviour might be more likely. Interbreeding too probably. I’ve never experienced aggressive behaviour like that from any cat.

Or a water pistol.

PestoHoliday · 26/07/2025 20:49

Use some cooled, boiled water with salt in (a teaspoon per pint to make a saling solution) and bathe both your dog's injury and your own very thoroughly.

Cat bites and (in particular) claws can introduce all sorts of diet and bacteria into a scratch. Robust cleaning with saline is an excellent first point of call.

If you have an old Calpol syringe, that's a great tool for flushing any wounds or broken skin with saline.

PestoHoliday · 26/07/2025 20:56

Their fangs inject bacteria into the wound.

@Tuxeda , oh for heaven's sake, no they don't. They are cats, not rattle snakes or vampires. They don't inject anything.

Their mouths, like those of dogs, have a number of strains of bacteria that can cause infections but they don't "inject" anything at all.
