I just got attacked by two cats

I am so shaken and am wondering what people would do in my situation.

I’ve just been out walking my dog, on her leash. A couple of streets away from our house, we saw a cat sitting on the pavement. It walked towards us and then turned around and disappeared into a drive. As we passed the drive the cat jumped out from under the car and attached itself to my dog’s face. I tried to go in between them and get the cat off when a second cat shot out from under the car and also went for my dog and my legs. We managed to move about a meter but the cats wouldn’t let go of my dog and I got knocked to the ground. They then kept attacking both me and my dog. I didn’t know what to do at all. I got 5 cats myself and have never seen such aggression. There was nobody on the street to help us. Eventually I managed to get up and we ran away.

As we turned the corner I saw two girls walking their dog. I told them not to turn into that road and explained what happened. They described what the cats looked like and said similar had happened to them on a previous walk. They said in their case the cats had been lurking hidden in a hedge and jumped out and attacked as they walked past.

I’m home now and still shaken. My dog has a small bite on her chest. I have a scrapped elbow and buttock and my shoulder is sore.

I’m home alone at the moment. I feel like an idiot being so upset about being attacked by cats. My dog, a very docile lab, is a bit shocked too.

Bloody hell! Poor you and poor DDog!

Keep DDog’s bite as clean as you can, I would probably take her to the vet though as cat bites get infected really quickly.

Not much you can really do about the cats apart from try to avoid them in future. There’s a nasty cat around here that I have to avoid like the plague because it goes batshit if a dog walks past, my dog loves cats so I don’t want him to suddenly be afraid of them!

DoneitagainhaventI · 26/07/2025 14:44

That sounds horrendous OP.

I.would report it to the police- you know the address of the property. Certainly your dog could have lost an eye in the attack. And if you've been scratched you should think about getting a tetnus booster.

I think I don’t have scratches, just scrapes from the road. I was luckily wearing a pair of thick jogging bottoms.

I dread to think what would have happened had I been an elderly person walking their dog. There are a few around here. They wouldn’t have gotten back up.

I agree about booster for you as well.
Do you have a local FB group to post about this to warn people + maybe you’ll get done more info/ an advice?

We have a very active local FB page. I rarely use FB these days but might start again for this.

My shoulder/elbow is getting more sore as time goes on. I think I’m most concerned about that now. I’m a nurse and need that arm to work.

Please post about it. A lot of people send kids to walk dogs during summer holidays so they might need warning.
Hope your elbow gets better and it’s nothing serious and hope your dog is ok.

Crunchymum · 26/07/2025 16:10

Is your tetanus up to date?

I got attacked by 2 cats (one being my own, I stupidly got involved when she was squaring up to my neighbours cat and then they both went for me).

I ended up needing a tetanus and was on 2 different antibiotics for 10 days as I was scratched to pieces. Was wearing a short dress when I went down to "rescue" my girl.

I went into work as soon as I'd seen the GP the day after it happend, as I knew they'd never believe how roughed up I was from 'being attacked by cats' and was promptly sent home.

I'd definitely post on your FB group and make people aware.

Do you live in or near countryside @Attackcats ??? These don't sound like domesticated cats. No domesticated cat would behave like this. (None I have ever known anyway.) It sounds like wildcats. Although even wildcats are unlikely to attack a person or another animal unless provoked or threatened.

What a very strange thing to occur. Never known anything like this in my life.

Hope you're all OK. Not sure who you can report it to though. Unless you actually do know who the cats belongs to - if they're not wild/feral.

My neighbour's male cat is like that. I've also seen that behaviour in a mother cat protecting its kittens

bloodredfeaturewall · 26/07/2025 16:43

bengals by any chance?
our neighbour's was vicious. we went out with umbrellas. sadly cat got run overby a car.

I doubt the police will be interested, cats have a right to roam and owners aren't accountable for their actions as with dogs.

Glitchymn1 · 26/07/2025 16:51

They can’t be regular cats surely, what did they look like?

Tamarastar · 26/07/2025 16:54

Hi @Attackcats - sorry to hear that and hope you are both recovering from the shock!

This happened to us too when we walked past a house with 3 cats outside on the wall a few years ago. They jumped down & our gentle old dog (who just ignored the cats- she was used to our own cat) was attacked and left bleeding and crying.

The owners came out of the house due to the noise and apologised and said it was because the cats had been scared by a dog the year before, and now attacked all dogs that passed. (They had no plans to confine the cats or put a warning sign up though!)

TheCurious0range · 26/07/2025 16:57

Domestic cats definitely are capable of this, I've seen my own cat attack a fox who had come into our garden, he had it on the floor and was biting its throat until I got the hose out. This is the same sweet little fluff ball that curls up on my lap and will meow and bat his eyes at me for treats. They are predators.

Witchyandtwitchy · 26/07/2025 16:59

We had the same near us. Definitely a domestic cat.
It attacked lots of dogs, it really was nasty.
The owners had it put to sleep in the end as so many people complained.

spoonbillstretford · 26/07/2025 17:00

I'd put something on the local Facebook page about them to warn others, and perhaps the owner will also read it.

In those situations unless the road was busy I'd let my dog off the lead in that situation - I wouldn't want her to hurt a cat and have two dear cats myself but if she/we were being attacked I'd allow her to defend herself or get away

RedRosie · 26/07/2025 17:03

Unusual for cats, but even domesticated animals can act out of the norm (cats after all, are small tigers). That must have been awful for you. I'd get the dog (poor dog) seen by a vet as cat bites can be nasty. And get yourself looked over. Don't underestimate the shock. 💐

Indigomelon · 26/07/2025 17:04

Two cats attacked my father in laws’ dog, completely unprovoked. He struggled to get them off her.

I know that the police aren't generally interested in cat bites. But the fact these cats were so aggressive that they actually caused her to fall over is on a different level.
As has been commented if they do this to an elderly person or children there could be serious consequences. So OP would do well to report it and if the police so nothing that's not her fault.
I actually think its worth phoning the RSPCA advice line because this is an abnormal level of aggression. They may be interested in the cats welfare or have advice on what OP should do.

Nannyfannybanny · 26/07/2025 17:12

Hope you and doggo are ok. Domestic cats DO behave like this. Years ago I was walking home,in the next road to where we lived. I had youngest ds in a pram and oldest DS 6 was walking next to me. Collie on a lead. There was an old cottage and 2 Siamese cats, sitting on the step,as we walked past, the whole of the cats eyes went red, like something out of a horror. They flew out, scratching and biting my 6 year old,who was screaming his head off, Im trying to get them off, while holding onto the pram, we're at the top of the hill. There was a pub nearby being refitted, the builders heard my son screaming, ran over to help. Chased the cats off.we and a cat of our own as well as the dog. They tore DSs tracksuit to pieces. I went round showed the tracksuit to the cats owners, they said the cats didn't like us walking by!! They weren't interested,my poor ds became a nervous wreck

Evenstar · 26/07/2025 17:15

My DH ended up at Urgent Care a few weeks ago after he was bitten and scratched badly by one of our own cats ( two of them were fighting and he got in the middle 😢). I think it would be wise for you and poor DDog to get checked over, DH had antibiotics and a tetanus jab and the bite wound was properly cleaned and dressed.

Also I would report to the police mentioning that the girls had the same experience, the doctor at Urgent Care did suggest that the cat should be reported but as he was ours that wasn’t really necessary!

Evenstar · 26/07/2025 17:17

@Nannyfannybanny that’s awful, if a cat of mine ever did that it would become an indoor cat from then on.

Oh my word! Your poor ds!

Apocketfilledwithposies · 26/07/2025 17:20

OP get your dog and yourself checked out. If you can face it, maybe pop yourself to minor injuries. I'd definitely post in your neighborhood group. Lots of elderly people and kids walk dogs and if you ended up falling it could happen again.

Elasticareboot · 26/07/2025 17:22

I’d both get yourself and dog checked out just in case and report it on the local Facebook, how horrible.
