How many clean facecloths/washcloths is unreasonable?

If you are someone who uses cotton face flannels for washing, do you wring it out and hang it up between uses or get a fresh one every time?

We have always had a basket of them in the bathroom. Everyone takes as needed and they all get washed at the end of the week.

DH and I both usually have one on the sink for face-washing and one in the shower, and tend to take a new set every three or four days.

Teen Dc have started using multiple clean ones every day, the basket ends up empty and there are arguments.
So we’ve agreed everyone gets their own colour, nobody else uses those, if you use them all up before laundry day then it’s free for all with ones in the basket.

I was interested to gauge opinion on how many clean flannels one might use in a week. DH reckons at most 4, Dd thinks 20 at least.

I use a fresh one each day. Morning cleanser, remove with flannel in the shower. Evening use micellar water to take makeup off, cleanser, flannel. Then it goes in the wash. DP uses them for shaving. We have about 20 in a basket in the bathroom - I replace them every six months or so and the old ones become kitchen cloths.

I don't use a flannel on my face - just water, using my hands.

I use a flannel in the bath and / or shower, squeeze it out and air it and probably washi it about once a week.

Good heavens, I use 2 a week. 1 for me, 1 for DH.
Rinse and repeat each day.

I’m the only one who uses a flannel in my house. If I use it to wash off a full face of foundation then it goes straight in the wash after but, most days I only wear blusher and powder so I usually get about two days before I put it in the wash.

TheChosenTwo · 25/07/2025 23:59

I’m the only one who uses them, on a fairly clean face in the morning, hung over the heated towel rail so it’s dry by the time I come to use it in the evening. Then it goes in the wash basket. I suppose I have around 10 but I put on a wash most days so I only ever really end up using the top couple!

DrJump · 26/07/2025 00:01

I use a fresh one each time. I'm prone to skin infections. Rather a clean one that massive boils on my face.

They are tiny and wash and dry well.

WhatsMyName25 · 26/07/2025 00:04

Like others I use a clean one in the morning, hang it up to dry and use it take my makeup off at night. It dries overnight then into the laundry basket. I still laugh at my friend who once said “I have a hot cloth cleanse every night” 😂. Face washing will never be the same after hearing that!

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 26/07/2025 00:13

Like PP I have about 300 on the go. I live alone.

I use one for my face cleanser,
second for face wash,
In my morning shower 1 for washing with soap,
Second for the shower wash,
Out of the shower, one to rub the excess lotion from my feet,
I use one on the seat of my shower chair to stop myself slipping and sliding off it
Another face wash at night before I get into bed
Final one is for micellar water

So average day is 8 face cloths a day. I drop directly into a basket when used and it is all washed on a hot wash on Sunday morning..Dried and dropped back in the basket in the bathroom. To start again on Sunday evening...

Towels are also washed on Sundays, 1 hair towel, 1 body towel and a hand size towel for each day. . The bathroom sink gets it's hand towels changed daily. All dropped into their basket and washed together.

RainSoakedNights · 26/07/2025 00:14

On the face? I’ll change every 3-4 days. You just wash it out after use and let it dry.

Falingoth · 26/07/2025 00:18

On a morning I tend to just splash my face in the shower.

On a night I use cotton pads and micellar water to remove make up, then cleanser and a flannel. If I've worn foundation I'll put it in the wash afterwards but if not it'll last another day or two.

I'm the only one who uses them though.

lemoncurd2025 · 26/07/2025 00:35

I have about 30 - I use one a day for taking off my cleanser and one for washing in the shower
when they get scruffy they become cleaning cloths and I buy new flannels in a different colour!

RobinEllacotStrike · 26/07/2025 00:55

I live with 2 teenager girls and our flannel routine is similar to yours op. We each have a flannel hook but I seem to be the only one who uses mine

we we probably have about 30 and our supply rarely runs out even if dd2 is over zealous with them.

I do a load of washing most days so flannels are always in the wash. It’s no big deal. Not something I’ve ever thought about.

I tried the colour coded route but the teens are uninterested.

I wash at 30degrees or cold wash & use basics washing powder (as it’s the lowest scented I can find). according to MN we should all be dead & are likely walking around in filthy stinking clothing & don’t know it 😂.

Incredibly we are all quite popular & well liked by friends & associates despite my slovenly clothes washing ways & our apparently stinky filthy clothes.

PoopingAllTheWay · 26/07/2025 01:01

For myself, 2 flannels every shower....
and they get washed after every shower.
Two towels every shower and they also get washed after every shower

AffableApple · 26/07/2025 01:08

It's just not a hill to die on. Fresh bathsheets every day, no way. Fresh flannels a couple of times a day? Meh.

Noshadelamp · 26/07/2025 01:10

I use a clean one every day for my face. DD also uses a clean one each time she washes her face, she uses them to dry her face as well so she probably uses 3-4 most days.

We use the smaller size 10 inch bamboo cloths for face use, a pack of 8 for £7 on amazon.

familyissues12345 · 26/07/2025 02:04

I usually use a flannel a day, so use the same one twice.
