How many clean facecloths/washcloths is unreasonable?

If you are someone who uses cotton face flannels for washing, do you wring it out and hang it up between uses or get a fresh one every time?

We have always had a basket of them in the bathroom. Everyone takes as needed and they all get washed at the end of the week.

DH and I both usually have one on the sink for face-washing and one in the shower, and tend to take a new set every three or four days.

Teen Dc have started using multiple clean ones every day, the basket ends up empty and there are arguments.
So we’ve agreed everyone gets their own colour, nobody else uses those, if you use them all up before laundry day then it’s free for all with ones in the basket.

I was interested to gauge opinion on how many clean flannels one might use in a week. DH reckons at most 4, Dd thinks 20 at least.

A fresh one daily. Use in the morning, then rinse and hang up to use in evening. Teens use two - one per day for face, one per day in the shower. They get washed with towels etc. so no extra washing loads

FIFIBEBE · 25/07/2025 16:19

I estimate we have 200 in two bathrooms constantly circulating and being washed.Blush

Look the thing you need to understand is that your way isn't right, it is just your way. As they are teens, have a sit down chat and say let's talk about the flannel situation and see what they propose. How many do they think they need in a day? Also this might be for intimate use so it isn't necessary to know what it is for.

If you are washing them every week anyway how much capacity does your washing machine have? I will be honest and say we have a lot of flannels because they are used for cleaning as well as washing faces. Sink cleaning uses the flannels too. Ours are coloured so we know which ones go back into the children's bathroom and which ones are mine and Dh's.

Ours are washed with dettol laundry cleanser to remove bacteria and tumble dried. I wash them when we are running low.

I won’t reuse washcloths.

Growing up my family was the dry and reuse type and really pushed the boundaries on reuse. It was disgusting.

I have a drawer with about 100 washcloths in it. Family uses them and throws them in a designated washcloth basket. It’s big and airy and can handle wet cloths just fine. I wash once a week and dump them back in the drawer.

Squirrelblanket · 25/07/2025 16:30

I use one clean one on days I wear make up, so weekends and one day a week in the office. I'm too lazy to wear make up on the other days and just use face wash and my hands on those days.

polarsystem · 25/07/2025 16:32

i reuse for face washing. Everyone uses a new flannel every time we shower though.

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/07/2025 16:32

new one each time. so usually 2 per person a day.
we have loads.

Matildahoney · 25/07/2025 16:32

1 for my face, 1 for the rest of my body, and change each week.

Goldpanther · 25/07/2025 16:38

I just wash my hands, then wash my face with face wash, no flannels used here at all.

I didn't even know if was a thing that people do! But I'd ask your dd how many she wants, if there is room in the washing machine it won't make much difference.

henlake7 · 25/07/2025 16:42

I cant see why you would need to use more then 2 a day, anything over that Id consider excessive.

lowlight · 25/07/2025 16:47

1 per day for face cloths. I know some people would say 1 per wash but morning wash would be a clean face so no problem to use it again in the eve to remove makeup

Do you use the muslin facecloths? these are less bulky and dry quicker than toweling flannels

Sgtmajormummy · 25/07/2025 17:18

When the kids were small it was one each per day left on the side of the bath for reuse then into the whites basket. I fondly remember drubbing their little faces with a soapy bath mitt to the Three Men in a Tub rhyme Grin.
If it’s for makeup removal, knock yourself out. They’re already here so why not use them?
I love a good exfoliating scrub with a flannel. They’re cheap, like 50p at Primark, and plentiful in our house. Ours are currently grey for mascara, green to match the bathroom and white (see above). Maybe 20 for 3 people.
Old ones get used as wet dusters.

Middlemarch123 · 25/07/2025 17:22

Use once and stick in the wash, have about twenty so plenty for family and visitors, even if it was just me, I would only use once and then stick in the washing machine.

Roselilly36 · 25/07/2025 17:23

Not counted mine, but I would guess I have atleast 20, changed every day here.

QuartzIlikeit · 25/07/2025 17:24

I use face muslins - i use each one once then wash. I use 3 per day as I double cleanse at night.

DC also use them, again once then wash. We have about 40!

As someone who suffered with my skin as a teenager, I would never use anything on my face that wasn't clean.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 25/07/2025 17:29

Once again I fall well below the typical Mumsnet hygiene standards.

I use the same one for at least a week before it goes in the wash.

What are people doing with their faces to get them so dirty?

RaininSummer · 25/07/2025 17:36

I used one on the odd days I don't shower in the morning and it might stay available for a couple of days but then I would get a fresh one out. Make up pads are great for face at night though so I use one a day of them too.

gingercat02 · 25/07/2025 17:37

We all have our own colour. DS and DH have 2 each which get washed whenever they put them.in the basket. I have loads and use a fresh one ever day or 2.

Nottodaty · 25/07/2025 17:44

If im removing make up (say with a balm) i would pop it in the wash straight after. If its just wash face then rinse and hang up to use again.

My children both suffer acne so they use a clean one each use.

Jamfirstest · 25/07/2025 17:59

If it was me I would buy another 10 or so but tell the kids they need to put them in the wash when the basket is empty.
Aldi sold bamboo face cloths for a while they are amazing I will buy the lot if they sell them again. I bin them if they get a bit weird

SpookedMackerel · 25/07/2025 18:43

Ok, so a lot of people would use a fresh one every time, interesting.

She does actually have little round washable make up pads, but I think just prefers flannels.

I’ll give each DC a tenner to buy as many as they want/can in a colour of their choice - I like the PP idea of grey ones for Make-up.

Well I wear mascara daily so it ends up on the flannel and doesn’t rinse off 🤷🏻‍♀️

Plantladylover · 25/07/2025 23:37

Gosh they sound vile. Like the dishcloth. The biggest carrier of germs in the kitchen. As a pp said not used one since i was a little girl. Facial wipes to remove makeup and just wash.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 25/07/2025 23:41

I use one each day wrung out in hot water after cleansing or cold water for a wipe on a hot day. I have a tendancy to eczema on my face so I wouldn’t risk bacteria from stale water for the sake of washing a face cloth
