At what age? Cinema

DublinLaLaLa · 24/07/2025 19:57

Child A (5y) and parent want to see film 1 and child B and C (both same age but NOT FIVE!) want to see film 2.

At what age would you let child B and C go together to see a film without you, assuming:

  • You are in the same cinema complex in a film with child A
  • It’s the early showing (10am ish)
  • Both films go in/let out about the same time
  • Both children have been to the complex before and know your screen no. and where toilets are
  • Both children are sensible rule followers
  • Neither child has a phone
  • The film is age appropriate

Two five year olds? Have I misunderstood?

MartinChuzzletwat · 24/07/2025 19:59

You want to send two 5 year olds to the cinema on their own?!

Soitis83 · 24/07/2025 20:01

No, they're saying the 5 year old wants to see one film and the older two want to see something else, so they'll go with the 5 year old but the other two will go alone to the other one.
10/11 for me personally

DublinLaLaLa · 24/07/2025 20:01

No, of course not! I’m just saying what ages would B and C need to be for you to feel happy sending them in to a film without you! I’m very certain 5 is too young! But was interested in what age people feel happy spitting up on a cinema trip.

I’ll see if I can re-word my OP!

My DS is a sensible 9 and I would probably let him do this. I might check on him half way through (which would involve taking the 5 year old with you I guess, but they might need the loo anyway at some point?)

DarkLion · 24/07/2025 20:02

Probably 12 or 13, you don’t know that they’re not gonna piss about and disturb anyone else but would think a little bit maturer as a teenager

I think the OP means that B and C are the same age as each other, not that B and C are the same age as A.

TheNightingalesStarling · 24/07/2025 20:03

10ish.
Basically whatever age you would be fine letting then out unsupervised

If eldest is 14+ then 7/8 for younger one depending on dynamic

DryIce · 24/07/2025 20:03

My eldest is 8 and I would not send, mainly due to concern for the other viewers. However some of their classmates would I think be fine with this - so I would say a sensible 8 or 9

SemmaLina · 24/07/2025 20:06

8 ?
I dropped DS off with a group of friends to watch a film at age 10 ( year 6 ) at the local flea pit which had one screen and picked them up when it was over

redgingerbread · 24/07/2025 20:07

Maybe 12?

DanceMumTaxi · 24/07/2025 20:08

About 12 probably. Possibly 11 if end of year 6 and they’re nearly 12. I have a very sensible 9 year old (not far off 10) and I think that’s too young.

andanotherproblem · 24/07/2025 20:08

I think I was going to the cinema with friends (dropped right to the cinema and picked straight back up) from year 6, so what’s that 11/12?

MadridMadridMadrid · 24/07/2025 20:09

On the basis that the children are rule followers, I would say around age 10 or 11. I suspect in practice the cinema may have a minimum age for allowing children in unaccompanied by an adult.

Needmorelego · 24/07/2025 20:09

The fact that 12 year olds can see a 12A without requiring an adult with them I would say the general age to go alone should be around 12.

TaupeMember · 24/07/2025 20:10

11 or 12 depending on children in question

Livpool · 24/07/2025 20:11

About 11 - DS is 9 and quite sensible and no way ready for cinema on his own or with a friend

Edited

Same as me! He is 10 in October and not ready yet

ARichtGoodDram · 24/07/2025 20:12

It really depends on the kids. DD1 I could have sent at 8. DD2 id still be a bit dubious at 22 as she's so easily distracted.

Also do they behave better or worse together? DS1 I could have sent at 10, and DD1 at 8, but sending them together would have been a disaster.

whatwasthatnoise · 24/07/2025 20:14

I wouldn't let my 10 year old go to the cinema with just his big brother let alone a few friends of the same age. I would let my 13 year old go with friends, and I would even let them travel under their own steam (bus or train, they've been on short ish outings with a few friends). The eldest has matured a lot over the last 6-12 months. The youngest isn't ready for that yet.

MadridMadridMadrid · 24/07/2025 20:03

I think the OP means that B and C are the same age as each other, not that B and C are the same age as A.

It's simple.

A = 5
B = C
B + C = 2x

x = ?

WhitegreeNcandle · 24/07/2025 20:15

Mine is 12 and we’ve just started doing that since he went into y7. He does have a phone. Locked down so can only make calls.

He did take his 10 year old very sensible sister with him to watch LILO and Stictch because I could t face it. They were fine and enjoyed it. Thing they relished the chance to be independent I think

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 24/07/2025 20:18

I would let my 10 year old do that with a sensible friend.

herbalteabag · 24/07/2025 20:18

About 9. But my main concern would be too much talking or being annoying, so we'd have to have a talk about that first.
