Do you scream?

I don't mean when... you know... 😳
...and this is not a Sistine Chapel thread. Or at least, I don't think it is!

I was cleaning my teeth last night when DH walked into the bathroom. I'd thought he was asleep, and because of the noise of the electric toothbrush didn't hear his footsteps approaching.

Well, I let out such a shriek that we were both deafened 😬 ... of course laughed about it immediately, but anyone walking past the house might easily have felt they should raise the alarm!

This morning I remembered that when staying at a hotel recently, at breakfast I screamed when the waitress suddenly appeared at the table to take my order. Luckily there weren't many other guests around, but it was hard to reassure her she'd done nothing wrong.

DH has reminded me that when he first came to stay (years ago), I screamed when he appeared in the garden on the first morning. (I'd lived alone for some time...)

I don't consider myself a particularly nervous person and am curious to know if this happens to you too?

I scream if suddenly startled but only as a reflex and can usually cut it off very fast So it’s more like a sharp squeal. Things like my husband popping his head round the shower curtain when I’m in the bath and thought the door was locked. Yet when I was in real cases where I was scared for my life I didn’t scream. I guess my body went into flight mode then.

I'm not sure I'd survive that head-popping 😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣

I agree though, when in real danger I haven't screamed at all - gone silent, or just a "urgh". So at some level when startled, I must know I'm not actually going to die!

Many years ago my best friend and I went to see The Woman in Black at the village hall. I screamed the whole way through... I then made my best friend walk me home as we live on the edge of a rural village with few street lights.
No word of a lie as I put my hand on the garden gate bolt to slide it back my then boyfriend cycled up behind us with no lights.. "GOOD EVENING LADIES!" Cue two women leaping in the air, more screaming and a lot of swear words!!

See, you're all crawling out of the woodwork now 🤣😍

Yep, involuntary high pitch shout / yelp when I’m startled. Not the same long screams you associate with blue murder. it’s physical too I jump and fling my arms out. Moro reflex is present in new borns it’s not something we choose. In adulthood it can be linked to ptsd, hyper vigilance, anxiety etc

BarilynBordeaux · 24/07/2025 21:56

I have a huge startle reflex (thanks childhood) but it comes out as ‘fuck!’ and, if seriously rattled , a right hook, so the waitress thing could have been worse 😂

Mayve · 24/07/2025 21:59

Yes when I see certain types of spider too near me unexpectedly
DH and I were cleaning an outside window the other day and what I thought was a spider got in my hair. I screamed absolutely blue murder and couldn’t have stopped myself for a billion pounds.

Sometimes someone will sneak up on me while im concentrating on something and I'll make a weird noise. Imagine making an ay sound while doing a sharp breath in.

I used to do this. Now I'm 60 and well past menopause I fart if someone makes me jump.

Meadowflower2023 · 24/07/2025 22:06

Years back when I was in Spain, I was watching the lizards run across the stone wall by my sunbed, the next thing I could hear this person screaming and I mean screaming sooo loud, it took around ten seconds then I realised it was me and I had a lizard on my chest. The most bizarre and frightening thing at the same time. It was only maybe 15cm long! Surreal moment but yes it appears I am a screamer too.

Thankfully the latter has only happened twice. And frankly the bloke with the Vuvuzela had it coming.

So weird that you thought it was someone else doing the screaming!

And again, a lizard is not a genuine danger, so I am still thinking that there might be something about screaming that's almost like our body's way of reassuring us we're still very much alive 🌞🤷🏻‍♀️

There's only been two occasions in my life when I have been truely scared. I screamed on both occasions but no sound came out..

I have a friend who does it anyone sneaks up on her. It's completely due to the fact that she had a childhood full of fear.

I’m a jumpy person so yes I do scream when I’m startled. I know it irritates DP but I really can’t help it. I’m still mortified about a yoga class I did years ago. It was the relaxation bit at the end and I was really tired and half dropping off. I suddenly got startled and thought a rat was scuttling towards my face so screamed at the top of my lungs (totally involuntary 🙈) when actually it was someone getting up to go to the loo and walking towards me. Mortified. Literally screamed in a silent room full of people trying to relax.

I hope you demanded your money back for the relaxation session, it obviously didn't work!

Nope.

DazedAndConfused321 · 25/07/2025 00:33

I usually make weird noises when scared, like a grunt/groan. I only shriek if there's a bug near me...

I think that's me too. Maybe I spent too many years living alone, miles from anywhere, without so much as a cat to remind me that there are other living creatures in this world!

Not an old lady thing.

I've done it from when I was a child, brought up in a large family.
It would happen randomly and now wonder if it's when I'm very deep in my thoughts.

No history of controlling or screaming parents either, just a regular upbringing.

Still happens now, at hime, at work & in public like the loo example earlier.
Not everyday but enough to be known for it.

It is annoying but cant control it.

Yazzi · 26/07/2025 08:49

A colleague of mine is a screamer, I've made her scream on three separate occasions (not to brag LOL)
It's just a reflex, she doesn't mean to. She's embarrassed after and we all laugh!

mum11970 · 26/07/2025 09:38

Nope definitely not a screamer. Can understand some people can’t control an initial scream when startled, but can’t stand people who dramatically shriek, squeal or wail. Those can be controlled and are generally done by attention seekers.

I do wish that were true - it would make it much less mortifying 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m not someone who screams on the whole but I will jump if caught unaware. I’m not someone who shouts much either.
