How do old people (i.e. me and DH) turn their mattresses?!?!?!

We bought a new mattress that needs turning every week. FUCK ME. It's SO heavy and nearly breaks our backs every time. But if we don't turn it, it DOES get lumpy and uncomfortable.

Wish I'd stuck to my Ikea shitty mattress.

How do other people/old people manage this?!!!

How long have you had it? I've never heard of having to turn a mattress that often before.

ThirdStorm · 22/07/2025 15:20

Weekly? I barely remember to do mine once a year.

LavenderBlue19 · 22/07/2025 15:20

Every week?! Where is it from? I don't even always change the bedding every week.

Anyway, in answer to your question - my elderly parents get me and my partner to do it every few months when we visit.

If your new mattress needs turning once a week or it goes lumpy you need to send it back as it's not fit for purpose.

Trallers · 22/07/2025 15:22

No idea. Mines almost too heavy to lift a corner and get the sheet round I.e. I can do it but it requires everything I've got. I don't turn it. Wish I'd thought to try all that in the shop instead of just lying on it and seeing how comfy it was!

mynameiscalypso · 22/07/2025 15:23

I never turn ours. I like the little crater it has developed and which I sleep in.

WitchesofPainswick · 22/07/2025 15:23

Honestly, I really regret buying it! It's some sort of billion springs thing - got good reviews but it really needs regular turning.

Return it and get a good one. No mattress is worth risking a spinal injury over.

WitchesofPainswick · 22/07/2025 15:25

Benson's for Beds website says: "Most mattresses usually need to be rotated every month for the first few months after purchase and ideally, weekly after this. If you don’t rotate your mattress, it can lose its shape much faster, as the weight of your body on one side or section can leave an indentation. Double sided mattresses will also need to be turned regularly."

So it seems to be A THING

there are mattresses that don’t need turning.
anyway now you have yours you’ll find it needs turning regularly for about 6 months then it sort of settles and you can do it monthly or every couple of months. And even if they weekly, fortnightly is fine. Unless you are morbidly obese in which case you might have bought the wrong mattress for your needs

Are you sure it doesn’t say weekly for the first few months and then monthly?

This is why I went for a complete memory foam one. Because I can turn it myself of DH isn't here to do it

Even a £7,000 vi-spring mattress needs turning unless you buy a non turning one. So it’s not about it being a bad mattress

yakkity · 22/07/2025 15:29

Yes! But note it says rotated. Not turned. Rotated means spinning it not flipping it.

only needs turning /flipping monthly or so

Yes - true. Both are REALLY HARD TO DO THOUGH. We also have a superking bed FFS so it's ever harder.

I don't think I have ever turned a mattress in my life nor needed to. Sounds like you've been duped.

slightlydistrac · 22/07/2025 15:33

Having to turn a mattress every week is utter madness, and if they say it will ruin the mattress if you don't, then it is an appalling design flaw.

We swivel ours from head to toe about every 3 months, and flip it over around once a year and that's that. I have never turned a mattress more often than that.

WitchesofPainswick · 22/07/2025 15:33

Dreams website says the same:

"If you have a double-sided mattress, there will be a ‘Turn Over Regularly / Double-Sided’ symbol on the label. For the first 3 months, we recommend that you turn it over once a week. After that, turn it over just once a month."

OP posts:
mamagogo1 · 22/07/2025 15:34

No idea, I have probably turned mine 3 times in my lifetime!

WitchesofPainswick · 22/07/2025 15:34

I complained to the shop that it was uncomfortable and they said we needed to flip it weekly for the first three months.

It IS more comfortable but it's killing us.

OP posts:
TheDandyLion · 22/07/2025 15:36

Sounds like that is their spiel so they can get out of any guarantee if you come back to them if you were to say it's sinking or collapsing.

Overpeover · 22/07/2025 15:46

I bought a Hypnos super king size a couple of weeks ago. It says rotate it weekly for the first three months and then once as each season changes.

W0tnow · 22/07/2025 15:47

I have never in my life turned my mattress. I had no idea it was a thing. Goodness, how do single people do it??

Ancientcreation · 22/07/2025 15:49

Yes, it is a thing. I had to do it with my previous mattress, and now again with my new one. It's to make sure the filling wears evenly.

I've now reached 3 months so it's monthly rather than weekly. It's only a double but it's bloody heavy.

I had been thinking the same as you OP, how do elderly people do it. I'm no longer young and I suspect when I get my next mattress I will be too feeble to do it!
