Easy to eat breakfasts

Bonus if they're easy to prepare! (I'm not always around when DC get up)

DD passed out yesterday and fell down the stairs, basically because she hadn't eaten much breakfast (only a cereal bar). She's not a fan of eating in the morning, and needs to be awake a while before she eats anything. She doesn't eat a lot of bread.

She also does a lot of sport so needs something substantial to keep her going.

Does she eat well usually? Passing out sounds a bit worrying.
My DD does a lot of sport and eats 2 fried eggs on 2 slices of toast and granola with yogurt, a whole banana and honey.

Would a drink be easier for her to stomach than food?
You could look at making a smoothie, adding oats and thick yoghurt then berries and honey or peanut butter and banana or whatever she likes. You could make it together the night before then she's just need to give it a shake /stir in the morning.

My ds choice of breakfast this week is (he's on school holiday and I leave before he wakes up):

Apricots, bananas, satsumas
Toast, (plus farm butter & jam), cereal bars,
Greek yoghurt - there's honey and hazelnuts in the cupboard
Hard boiled eggs - four I cooked yesterday for him to snack on.

I don't buy breakfast cereals at all. They are expensive, mostly very poor in terms of nutrition, and often loaded with sugar.

Ds usually wants something portable he can take from the fridge/cupboard and put straight in his mouth. Even putting yoghurt in a bowl is a stretch when he's just woken up.😁

Overnight oats
Full fat greek yoghurt with fruit and oats mixed in
Breakfast smoothie (yoghurt, milk, banana, oats (DD used the instant ones), fruit and honey)

She passed out in the morning because she’d only had a cereal bar? That sounds a bit worrying tbh. I have a thing where my blood sugar goes really low if I’m not careful about what I eat and when (diagnosed by a consultant with a blood sugar monitor). I would definitely get shaky (and pass out if I didn’t get food quickly) if I had a sugary cereal bar and nothing else for breakfast. But I don’t think it’s something that would make most people faint?

If she can eat more easily when fully awake, would a later breakfast help. Eg. Walk to school then have breakfast there. (I know this won't help over summer but maybe for September). I keep a pack pain au chocolat and orange juice cartons in the car so the kids can have a top up second breakfast later on if they didn't have much before leaving home, maybe a little box of 'just in case' food in her bag. Not the best nutritionally, but better then not eating and as doesn't go off socan just live in the car/bag until it gets eaten.

Yeah, she basically had the cereal bar as there was nothing else. Hadn't had a large meal the night before because DH didn't buy anything (he only bought for lunch 🤨). He took them out on a 4k run. She didn't eat anything when they got back as DH was taking them out to lunch. Then she passed out on the way out of the house.

DH often skips breakfast so it didn't occur to him to make sure she'd eaten something.

Later breakfast is not practical on a school day, she takes the bus to school and doesn't have a lot of time between when it arrives and lessons. She normally has a bag of trail mix in her school bag. I'm making a list of things to try out with her next week when I'm on holiday!

Banana sandwich
Overnight oats
Yoghurt drink made into a smoothie with the addition of a banana and other fruit plus a handful of oatmeal.
Hard boiled eggs
Ham and cheese croissant.
Flapjack bar made with added nuts and dried fruit.
Breakfast muffin with added oats.

Would she consider something non- conventional like rice made into a salad?

She didn’t pass out because she hadn’t eaten and she shouldn’t be doing a run without eating something.

Scrambled eggs on or off toast? Toast generally? Eggs Florentine? Huevis Rancheros? Would she try other types of bread like brioche or bagels?

Is your Dh rushing around trying to work out what to do next time?

Really, anything she likes and will eat. And send her with a snack for morning break.

I’ve passed out before as I haven’t eaten
my dad is the same, our blood sugar plummets quickly
before now I’ve had porridge for breakfast, 3 Jaffa cakes on a work break and then gone bang outside and woken up with an ambulance crew telling me how low my sugar is
we both carry glucose tablets and you can see my dad visibly shaking when he’s low if he hasn’t eaten
neither of us are diabetic and both passed out more often as teenagers

Your DH is neglectful for not feeding DD and expecting her to be ok doing a 4k run. He needs to be a better parent to her.

It’s really worrying that your 13 year old basically had to miss 2 meals in a row over a 15 hour period because you didn’t have anything available to eat.

Sporty kids, esp those in puberty need so many calories. They are often operating on a knife edge. Your DH needs to be better organised. My DH used to do this. Assume 13 year olds can do a load of stuff on very little food. Its not good for them. Please make sure there is food in!

How can it be that there is nothing in the house to eat? You have a child, not a wage earning adult who would be responsible for making his own food.

Don't you plan meals or have at least some basic pasta/pesto/tomato sauce around if everything fails?

Even a JustEat delivery can be sorted.

My DH can survive without breakfast but living with me and my low blood pressure he learnt over the years that a) I need regular meals and b) it's also his job to ensure the fridge is stocked.

She needs to eat anything she can manage. It doesn’t have to be typical breakfast food, just food. Cheese and crackers, a hot chocolate, jacket potato and beans, pasta. Breakfast food is only breakfast food because we label it so!

Ready made frittatas - prob too expensive for every day but if there’s a day with early sport, that might be good
