Is this London itinerary feasible?

I’m travelling into London for work tomorrow but basically have the day to myself. I have meetings the rest of the week.

Is it feasible to visit Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the Wallace collection in the same day? All are pretty much open 10-5 so I wouldn’t be able to spend a lot of time at each museum, maybe around an hour or 2 before having to travel to the next one. I’d also like to visit Westfield (white city) too.

Have meetings all day Wednesday and Thursday, then travelling home Thursday evening so can’t split the museum visits up…hence trying to cram everything in tomorrow. I can arrive into London at 9am.

It's definitely doable but you'll be knackered by the end of it!
What station are you arriving in London at?

IMissSparkling · 21/07/2025 21:45

Why would you do this to yourself?! Pick one or at a push, two.

DappledThings · 21/07/2025 21:46

Why would you want to? Unless there's a couple of specific things you want to see at each gallery and nothing else why not take the opportunity to enjoy one, maybe two of them properly and leisurely.

Wigtopia · 21/07/2025 21:47

Sounds pretty full one, but doable although you might find yourself rushed. Have you also factored in ‘museum fatigue’? It can only be cured by lunch/cake in a museum cafe!

at risk of adding to your itinerary I’d highly recommend the Soans Museum if you can fit it in! It unusual but delightful!

Mikart · 21/07/2025 21:49

Yes I've done those 3 in a day to see specific exhibitions

Ahh thanks! Euston

Yes very easily. Just make sure you factor in travel time between each place. Maybe pick your top 2 and see if you have time for the rest. White City will be open later but it’s a bit of distance to travel to, depending on where you are staying.

lol! Well due to family & work I barely get to visit London anymore and I miss it! I used to live in London and have had these on my agenda to visit in recent years - but yeah, over the past few years it never worked out to visit them when I’m in London with others!

you probably could but I wouldn’t. I’d suggest an alternative, as coming into Euston do Wallace collection and Royal Academy summer exhibition. Or do one of those and one of the tates. Three is too much I think.

Well Tate Modern is definitely my preference but I suppose Tate Britain is more classic so ideally I’d visit there too. Wallace collection is really central so I was thinking it wouldn’t be much of a detour, but could skip this.

Thanks, Soane’s is closeby so might be a better shout actually!

My mum always says about museum legs!!

Oh brilliant! I noticed you saw specific exhibitions, would you say that’s all you had time for? As I’m guessing I wouldn’t be able to visit every floor at Tate Modern for example.

I'd forget Westfield. You'd spend most of your day dashing from one place to the other.

Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Wallace Collection are very different, so it depends what you most want to see. Tate Modern isn't my favourite place, I prefer the Wallace, but logistically the two Tates would fit best; I think you can get a boat between them.

CrickityCrickets · 21/07/2025 22:04

Wallace collection cafe is amazing.

NuffSaidSam · 21/07/2025 22:42

Definitely leave Westfield. It's the worst! Also, easily replicated almost anywhere else. It's just shops.

I'd pick your top two galleries/museums and do them at a more leisurely pace. There isn't much value in running past pieces of art as you to try to fit everything into one day.

Firealarms · 21/07/2025 22:48

Ahh thanks everyone.

Westfield is open til late, I think I can fit that in during the evening after the museums close. But ultimately central has pretty much everything that Westfield does (aside from space NK) so I could just stay central after Wallace collection.

I think overall I’d probably like Tate Modern & Wallace collection if I had to choose 2. Soane’s is closed on Tuesday.

I had a look at the Tate boat, it’s a good direct route from Tate to Tate but seems to take same amount of time as train.

CraftyYankee · 21/07/2025 22:49

I'd pick one of the Tates and Wallace Collection. Wallace is a lovely little jewel box of a museum. Probably more similar to Tate Britain so I'd spend the most time in Tate Modern if you're a fan of modern art. Really immerse instead of charging through on a speed tour.

Oceangrey · 21/07/2025 22:50

I'd just do both Tates. The boat between is nice and you get money off if you are going between, I think. Or maybe that's just with a membership.

LadyCrumb · 21/07/2025 23:16

Agree that Westfield (Stratford?) is terrible- I’d just go the Covent Garden for Space NK.
I’d do Tate Modern properly and then walk over to the Courtauld. If you haven’t been here for ages, go and have a look at Coal Drop yard behind St Pancras- it’s lovely.

Wolfpinkola · 21/07/2025 23:20

Avoid Westfield

There's a Space Nk on Marylebone high street which is v close to Wallace collection

Firealarms · 21/07/2025 23:36

Thanks everyone.

Might be silly but I’m also slightly worried about phone muggings walking about in central, because I might need to rely on my phone for directions! just trying to think how best to navigate west end without using maps.

Westfield I don’t think there’s much risk as I used to work there when younger so know it well without needing my phone.

Plus Regent Street and Neal Street if OP was thinking of an Oxford Street/ Bond Street mooch.

Snoozebuttonplease · 21/07/2025 23:56

I think you should drop Westfield - you'll be tired and it would be a slog, and there's nothing there you can't get from somewhere nearer to home. Liberty is the only shop I would specifically visit in London, purely for browsing as while everything is lovely, it's so expensive.

Instead of the Tates, would you consider the National Gallery and the Portrait Gallery, so near each other, and you could walk to Oxford St/Bond St/Soho, wherever you want to go.

Re phone - I would be very wary of walking around with it in my hand in London too. You can use the voice directions in Google Maps, and keep your phone in a cross-body bag - you'll still hear it telling you to 'in 10 meters, turn left into the Strand' etc, but not in your hand, so safe.

Otherwise, print off maps for your journeys.

Hope you have a great day.
