Do families sit and watch tv together in the evenings these days?

We don’t!

I have young adults now but I don’t think we have watched tv together for ten years apart from the very occasional thing that I might record for them that they might enjoy. They lose interest though and would never watch a whole series. I know times have changed and everyone has their own phone/tablet/laptop but it’s a shame. I remember watching tv with my family as a child and it was a really enjoyable activity.

Is it something you do in your house?

Yes, DS11 and I usually do once a week during the weekend. Sometimes DP with us, but he works shifts so it’s less common.

TaborlinTheGreat · 19/07/2025 22:04

Yes, often. Netflix series though, not scheduled tv.

YesHonestly · 19/07/2025 22:04

We’re the same as you OP.

I have many happy memories of sitting down as a family watching something on TV, especially on Saturday evenings, but it just doesn’t happen in this house!

Violetmouse · 19/07/2025 22:05

Most evenings. Currently busy watching ghosts on iPlayer. Race around the world before that

Notexactlyasplanned · 19/07/2025 22:10

Yup: we did with our teens and then they are home now (19 and 21 now) We went through a stage of introducing them to ‘classic’ (ie 80/ and 90s!) films too - interesting to see how many felt horribly outdated and those that still worked (Clueless, pride and prejudice, and ten things I hate about you remain on dds favourites list)
it was tough to find things everyone wanted to watch: there were some complex negotiations - but it was worth it. LED to lots of really interesting conversations (especially things like sex Education!) They often come home with recommendations for things we would like nowadays :-)

CarpetKnees · 19/07/2025 22:11

No

But people need to say how old their dc are. - the first reply being about an 11 yr old is very different from having older teens.

Oddly, we watched more together (or talked about programmes) after they left home ..... watching sports and chatting on WhatsApp as they match unfolded. So, not in the same room, but sharing the experience.

My dc have binge watched things for ages, but I have preferred to watch things one episode a week.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 19/07/2025 22:16

Yes, sometimes they're happy to sit with us. Definitely not every night, or even every Saturday night. Youngest has been nursing a hangover all day, so we watched a couple of films this afternoon and then watched all the crappy game shows like The Wheel and Blankety Blank this evening.

myplace · 19/07/2025 22:17

My 25yr old, barely at all for years. The 30 yr old maybe a series twice a year.

We ask whether anyone else wants to watch X, and occasionally someone does.

We have done film seasons over the holidays- each chosen a film we live we don’t think the others would have watched. Obviously we aim for something they’d like. They tend to choose new ones we won’t have seen yet, we choose ones they were too young for at the time!

MrsFrumble · 19/07/2025 22:17

Yes, most evenings we sit and watch something together before the kids (young teens) go to bed. We’re working our way through the X Files and Futurama at the moment.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/07/2025 22:20

We watch loads of Netflix/streaming series together with our boys (13 & 11) but we live overseas and there are very few shows that release one episode a week. Last one we watched was Reacher and the kids weren’t all that bothered by it but we loved it.
We’re all geared up to binge watch Wednesday when it releases and we’ll all watch it together.

Flomingho · 19/07/2025 22:21

Only occasionally, will we all watch TV as a family. Usually is there is a specific film or sporting event that we all want to see.

ExploringDreams · 19/07/2025 22:25

I have older teens and we’ll watch stuff together. Stranger Things and Squid games is one we’ve watched together. I’ve see Walking Dead and Breaking Bad and with older dc and we watch films on tv together every now and then.
Some tv such as Have I Got News For You, Bake off, and they also like watching random episodes of Come Dine With Me. Tonight we watched Birdbox.

AllKindsOfThingsAreInteresting · 19/07/2025 22:26

Yes, regularly - 19 and 22 year old. No-one really watches by themselves unless home alone. We have different shows on the go for different combinations of who's home.

Davros · 19/07/2025 22:29

DD22 and I regularly watch TV together. We usually have a few things on the go. Recently Ted Lasso, One Foot in the Grave, Professional bake off. She works shifts so we watch when she’s not doing an evening. Sometimes we watch our own things but we sit together. There’s only the two of us at home… and the cat

gamerchick · 19/07/2025 22:29

We don't have telly channels and youngest has never been interested in watching telly. We play games together though, whether it's on a machine or a board game.

Dontthink · 19/07/2025 22:33

There’s only a few shows that will grab everyone’s attention.

Traitors
Squid Games
Only fools and horses
Catchphrase.

Otherwise one persons got the controller and everyone else is on there phone dipping in and out of whatever’s on.

Exactly the same. It’s a nice thing to do together. Sometimes tricky to find things but then something like The Traitors comes along and gives us several strands to watch.

aWeeCornishPastie · 19/07/2025 22:34

Nope never 👎 wish we did

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 19/07/2025 22:37

Not every night but we do try to. I’ve. DS11 and DD14 so trying to get something to suit is interesting. We’re currently watching race around the world, come dine with me and Friday night dinner. We did watch an episode of Ted Lasso with them, which was funny but not appropriate!
My DH then watching sport with whoever is interested and I watch sewing bee with my DD.
Some films we’ll watch together, but as they’re getting older it’s harder to agree!
and then interestingly, we usually go on holiday to Northumberland in August and it just so happens that the olympics or Paralympic’s have been on, so we really enjoy watching those!

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 19/07/2025 22:39

Me and 19yo do. We always have. It means I suffered through some utter shite and she started watching some things a tad younger than may have been appropriate but I love that time with her.

Hothothotter · 19/07/2025 22:39

I tried to get dc into The Traitors but they weren’t keen. One likes Springwatch so we will occasionally watch an episode of that. They like hospital dramas which I would never watch!

I like things like Have I Got News for You or Would I Lie to You but they wonder what I’m laughing at.

DC are 19 and 21 and we haven't watched anything all four of us for as long as I can remember due to differing tastes, neurodivergence and all being out a lot in the evenings. DS doesn't watch any sort of drama, only sport or the occasional documentary or cookery type show. DD and DH watch a lot of sci fi and fantasy / superhero type stuff together which I don't like. I hardly watch TV at all in summer I'd rather be outside in the evenings, I haven't watched any TV at all in the last couple of months because it's been so warm. In winter I will watch quiz shows, documentaries, the occasional comedy with DD and maybe DH. On my own I watch occasional drama series (maybe 2 a year) and a bit of reality TV (Strictly, Bake Off etc). We don't all sit in isolation though, there's plenty of pottering from room to room for all
of us and doing other things together.

Splat92 · 19/07/2025 22:51

My kids are 14-21. Occasionally we'll have a movie night but other than that, no. I rarely watch TV. DH has it on from the moment he wakes up til the moment he goes to bed. Sometimes my kids will sit and watch sport with him but they're not really big TV watchers either.

gingercat02 · 19/07/2025 22:58

Yes for sure little while most nights. We usually have a series in the go. I have just introduced DS 17 to Father Ted tonight

Hothothotter · 19/07/2025 23:00

I’m actually surprised at how much tv watching there is.
