Do families sit and watch tv together in the evenings these days?

We don’t!

I have young adults now but I don’t think we have watched tv together for ten years apart from the very occasional thing that I might record for them that they might enjoy. They lose interest though and would never watch a whole series. I know times have changed and everyone has their own phone/tablet/laptop but it’s a shame. I remember watching tv with my family as a child and it was a really enjoyable activity.

Is it something you do in your house?

Yes we often do and always have but nobody has devices in bedrooms under the age of 16 so it might be due to that.

we often all watch an episode or two after dinner and before bed. Kids all in teens now 13-19.

Programmes we have all enjoyed together over the years include: Bake Off, Traitors, Ted Lasso, Schitts Creek, Friday Night Dinner, How I Met Your Mother, Young Sheldon, old series of Spooks, Killing Eve. Whoever is home on a Friday night will tend to watch a movie together but that’s increasingly few people.

I don’t tend to watch TV but I will make an exception for things we can watch as a family. DS is 10 and has recently got into reality TV so we’ve watched Race Across the World, Traitors etc.
We’re currently watching the documentary Humans which DS is loving!
We also do Monday night quiz night on bbc 2 which we enjoy as a family.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 20/07/2025 09:38

DD is 17 now so mostly buggers off to her room about 7ish, leaving me and DP with the TV.

But we do generally have a show that we're watching as a family, often do an episode with dinner. Finished Buffy and Angel a while back, on Lost now.

And me and DD will usually watch a film together if DP goes out for the evening.

betsy99 · 20/07/2025 09:48

When our three children were teeagers we rarely watched anything together apart from the occassional film or big sport matches (we are a sporty family) due to differing tastes and their other commitmetns. But the kids would often join us individually to watch stuff depending what was on.

Crunchymum · 20/07/2025 10:03

I got into the habit of watching a few episodes of Young Sheldon every evening with DC1 and DC2 (DC3 would be in bed)

Became a lovely nightly routine before they'd go up and read for half an hour.

Sadly we've finished all 7 seasons and haven't been able to find anything we all enjoy as much / anything suitable for a 10 and 12yo.

Hothothotter · 20/07/2025 12:39

My dc did watch the final of Race Across the World with me and they will occasionally watch Bake Off so similar to what others have mentioned. One dc is enjoying Gilmore Girls but watches it on their own.

During the week no, not as a family but I might watch an episode of something a couple of nights a week with my DH.
At weekends we tend to have movie nights or afternoons as a family

My son has just asked to start watching Buffy though (one of my all time favourite shows) so will be doing a few episodes of that a week soon 😀

BugsyMaroon · 20/07/2025 12:43

We do. DH, Me, DS1 (15) and DS 2 (13).

After dinner we all sit and watch whatever. Often a netflix film. Everyone but me lieks The Simpsons so i tidy the kitchen then. Then I come back and we watch something. Often Young Sheldon like a PP and currently Downton Abbey.

Both Dcs and I are big film lovers so we will always watch a film together at the weekends when DH is doing his Outing Hobby.

BugsyMaroon · 20/07/2025 12:45

Oh yes- and we all got massively involved with Stranger Things.

Me and ds 16 are working our way through Waterloo Road!
Other series we’ve watched:
Peaky Blinders
Friends
Young Sheldon
Friday Night Dinner
Outnumbered
Gavin and Stacey
Chernobyl

All sorts really. It’s just me and him at home and we’ll watch an hour together most evenings.

ooh- we are planning on watching Chernobyl also. DS1 wants to and i saw it a few years back on a plane where i binged it.

DS1 also insisted we watch Adolescence. I was very reluctant but that was an amazing experience and led to all sorts of interesting discussions.

BCBird · 20/07/2025 12:52

We had 1 tele. We sat together. I loved Hart to Hart, realise now female in it was portrayed as dim- wouldn't watch now. Like Minder. Dad liked snooker. We watched it too. Happy days.

Britneyfan · 20/07/2025 12:54

It’s just me and my son at home who just finished sixth form, but yes we do watch stuff together reasonably often.

I have noticed that over the past year or two more often he is wanting to do his own thing to be honest. But there are still certain things we would watch together that we both really enjoy eg Traitors, Taskmaster, Have I got News for You, WILTY, Death in Paradise (not necessarily at the time of screening except for Traitors as we are addicted lol, we use catch up a lot), plus we sometimes watch a Netflix series we’re both interested in together. For example we watched “Black Doves”, “The Residence” and “Four Seasons” and “Alice in Borderland” recently. And we both love Selling Sunset 🤣🤣🤣 We have watched a few things on Apple together which have been good for both of us - Bad Sisters, Schmigadoon, The Afterparty. He does sometimes lose interest in a series, but then again so do I! For whatever reason, although we used to watch movies together, he’s become less interested in movies these days, preferring a series and it’s the same for me unless it’s a really highly anticipated movie. But I don’t know if that’s because I’ve got out of the habit of watching movies because of him or if we’re both losing our attention spans or what!

Some things he’ll watch on his own especially these days as I’m less interested (plus he likes a lot of YouTube American gamer channel stuff which I can’t stand!) and vice versa. Plus I like to read instead sometimes. We discuss most nights if we are going to find something to watch together or do our own thing. Mostly we are in step with what we want to do actually, but occasionally if I want the company and he is half-interested in what I’m watching eg Race across the world, he will sit next to me on the sofa half paying attention to that and half paying attention to something on his computer with his headphones half-on!

Twelftytwo · 20/07/2025 12:59

No we don't very often and it makes me a bit sad! Too much choice now.

Britneyfan · 20/07/2025 13:05

When Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin were both on Netflix being released week by week we watched those religiously as we both loved them and still agree it’s a shame nothing else has lived up to them since lol

newhouseplans · 20/07/2025 06:27

Yes, but only when I force them to. It's one of those activities, like going for a nice walk, that I know they'll get into it and enjoy it once we do it, but I have to cajole then into it.

They say "do I have to?!" Aland I say yes, it's important to me.

We don't do it very often though, and the number of programmes the whole family enjoys is small.

We tend to watch things like Bake Off, Race around the world, Would You Lie To Me and Taskmaster (bleeped version). DD has recently got into whodunits and DS will tolerate them, so that's opened up things like Ludwig and Death Valley which were great and made a nice change.

Amy recommendations welcome!

Try The Residence on Netflix. And Miss Fisher’s murder mysteries is a hidden gem on there (not sure if it’s still on there!) Also the movies Knives Out and Glass Onion if you haven’t seen them. And Afterparty on Apple TV is also great. My sister said Enola Holmes on Netflix was really good but I haven’t seen it yet. Not sure of their age but that one is aimed at children I think. They might be able to get into legal thriller type stuff if they like whodunits as there are often. Times/mysteries to be solved in these? White Collar is really good and The Lincoln Lawyer. And Extraordinary Attorney Woo is another hidden gem for this on Netflix.

Bengenderson · 20/07/2025 13:08

Sometimes a Netflix or other streamed series.

I do miss the days of the whole family watching Saturday night TV, and knowing a huge percentage of the nation would also be watching the exact same thing.

Tbairns · 20/07/2025 13:11

My DC are adults now but even when they lived at home it was only something we did occasionally. We would usually find something we all liked, but it wasn't easy. Now it's just DH and me we watch TV in different rooms 99% of the time.
DC rarely watch TV or streaming. When DS visits we sometimes watch an episode of the Good Wife.

Goodness I was half asleep when I wrote that post! The typos 😱

And it's Would I Lie to You, of course!!

DS will also watch sci-fi with his dad and me, and DD watches Traitors with me.

Cliffedge25 · 20/07/2025 13:13

Ever watched the Royle family? Well that was our house growing up.
Always thought it would be our house now, it’s not.
Even the cinema is way too expensive for us all to go.

We have all been watching Clarkesons farm 3 of us on the sofa then older dc watching in their room. This has been so lovely but disappointingly rare.
Ghosts has 2 of us watching together.
It’s a shame!

somethinggoodisgonnahappen · 20/07/2025 13:16

It was fun watching the Christmas episode of Gavin & Stacey as we rewatched the series with DC in the lead up to it so were all anticipating. Having all the TV / radio hype about it beforehand made me nostalgic for when it was terrestrial TV only.

We don’t watch together often now but all our family happily sit down for an episode of Friday Night Dinner.

TheOrangePriory · 20/07/2025 13:16

Yes, 11 and 14 here and we always have a series on the go and watch one or two episodes every night after dinner. I get told off if I look at my phone so I leave it outside the room now. Stranger Things was our favourite, also enjoyed Wednesday (which is coming back for a new series soon) and Brooklyn 99.

I stopped watching tv with my parents around 11ish - they watched all the soaps which I found boring so I'd go in another room to watch Buffy or Friends or read/listen to music/chat on the phone. Family tv watching isn't something I have nostalgia for, but I really love it with my kids.

UpsideDownChairs · 20/07/2025 13:18

Yes - although something from prime/netflix/channel 4

Youngest and I watch Taskmaster, as a family we sat and watched Reacher, and we're slowly making our way through House (previously we've done other series like Castle or Monk)

So it's not every night, it's not even a regular night (unless there's something particularly released on a certain day, like Murderbot recently)

but we certainly all heap on the settee together to watch TV most weeks at some point. The kids like it, it's just some time together before we all split up and do our own thing for most of the rest of the time

NicolaCasanova · 20/07/2025 13:24

Now it’s the summer holidays we sometimes all watch the news/weather on TV for 10-15 minutes after dinner before we play board / card games, and if there is a classical music concert at the weekend DH and I will watch it and DS12 tends to join us, less often DD13 too.
Otherwise the DC like to watch Gladiator type shows together (or Border Control -?!) when they’re allowed the TV and as we live in a small open plan flat more or less everyone is watching / hearing it to some extent too.

EwwSprouts · 20/07/2025 13:32

DS 21 back from university. Probably twice a week watch a couple of episodes of something about 9pm.
Reacher
Bosch
Death in paradise
Big bang theory
He & DH will watch some football matches when that gets going again.

Donna1001 · 20/07/2025 14:42

Yes.
I have DD14 & DD17. We watch coronation street together religiously (DH is in the same room , playing on his iPad apparently not watching it, but he knows wears happening!), & try to find Netflix/Amazon/Apple series that we can watch together.

we all loved Traitors, Race Across the World, From & Clarksons Farm.
