Are cordless vacuum cleaners worth it?

Just looking at cordless vacuum cleaners, I love the simplicity of not having to faff with a cable.

But it looks like you need to charge them for ages and they don't last that long.

Can they work as a substitute for a normal hoover, or are they only realty meant to be a supplemental thing, for quick jobs?

I’ve had a cordless Miele for a few years and love it.
A full charge does the entire house and it’s very light.
Every few months my dh will give the filter a good blast and it’s like new again.

Like many people on here, I gave up on my expensive Dyson, it was great at first, then it wasn't. Got a Henry and never looked back. All workmen have Henries!
All our family have Henries now, my daughter in law has just bought a cordless one that's not a stick vacuum, it looks like a normal Henry but it's rechargeable, sounds interesting! Also, they are made in the UK.

We had a hoover cordless on extended warranty. The drum had to be twisted onto the machine and had to be replaced four times due to cracking and breaking!
Domestic and General then let is choose a new one. The Vax one we chose keeps spitting out everything I've hoovered up!
We have a replacement arriving on Monday.
We used to have a Miele corded pet hoover.. Bloody nightmare. Was like going on army manoeuvres. Very heavy to carry lots of different brushes... Ugh!!

I think cordless can be brilliant - depending on your set up. For me it's great, so great in fact that I have one upstairs, one downstairs and a little shark handheld that does the stairs with minimal effort.

BUT... I live alone, three bed wooden floors d.s. carpets on stairs and in bedrooms, no kids, no pets. I have a Miele plug in, but the last time it was used was when I had some work done, and the tradie cleaned up after himself with it!

I honestly just have two cheapies off Amazon called Vytronix. Charge lasts about 30 minutes, maybe more, and that's plenty of time to do the floors. I have them a year now, and touch wood, all fine. They cost 70 quid each at the time!

We have a Samsonite and I really love it. I actually find hoovering now slighly enjoyable while I hated it with our old plug-in.

But - we hardly have any carpet, we are just 2 people, no pets and so it's easy to just get it around every couple of days.

It's living on the wall-mounted charging station so it's always ready to use.
If we do a deeper clean then we have to charge inbetween.

I have a corded Miele and love it. I used to be a cleaner so have tried so many different vacuums. Henry was too powerful and it used to tire me out fighting with it. The Miele has the power of the Henry but you can turn it up and down when needed.

I have a Samsung stick vacuum and I absolutely love it. On medium power it does 2/3 of the house (sometimes you need high power over some patches). So my solution is to buy a spare battery/charger to do the whole house. I never get my corded Dyson out anymore.

Love our cordless Dyson. 3 bedroom house with carpet, office and 2 bathrooms and entire downstairs with hard floors living dining kitchen and hall.

We vacuum more since we've had the cordless vac because it is so much easier and less troublesome. No cords for the kids to trip over. No plug socket vacuuming maths of "which plug socket shall I use to reach the vacuum here?" Good suction and it manages hard floors, stairs and bedroom carpets really well. Easy to interchange through the tools ours came with, too. Can do the whole house on just less than one charge so I tend to find somewhere else to vacuum to run it down completely then charge it. Down the back of the sofas usually!

Love ours and won't go back to corded now.

Cordless Dyson V11 absolute and I love it. I have. 3 bed, 2 reception kitchen. I hoover main areas every day. Bedrooms/kitchen once a week. Not as good as the old dc04 Dyson I had for nearly 20 years bit the ease of use makes up for it

I had a vax. It could not cope with my dogs' hair at all - I kept having to get new floor heads. My miele plug in handles it fine. Also the charge is awful, though mine came with 2 chargers so you could usually have enough. I also hated having to empty out the container. My miele has bags - much nicer.

millymae · 20/07/2025 13:32

I’m with CKMc2b - I have what I take to be a Samsung like hers and it really is a great little vacuum.
I had an at least twice the price Shark which I eventually returned under warranty because it ended up dropping more bits than it picked up and I couldn’t believe the difference when I used the Samsung for the first time. Everything about it is so much better
I only live in a small house and can vacuum the whole lot with one charge. If I lived somewhere bigger I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another to leave upstairs.

angela1952 · 20/07/2025 15:51

We have a cordless and the battery runs out very quickly, particularly on full power. We live in a fairly small place and can only do half of it at a time, on low power. Also we have wooden floors throughout so low power is OK, but it would be useless to clean carpets.
The other problem is that it tends to drop dirt when you turn off the suction, and emptying it is a grubby business.
The only benefit is that it's small to store and fits easily in a shallow cupboard that is only the depth of a bookcase.

MegaClutterSlut · 20/07/2025 15:58

Have a cordless dyson. Imo only good for quickie cleans. Had to buy a corded shark for deeper cleans as the dyson is shit for that. Wouldnt buy one again

Soontobe60 · 20/07/2025 16:08

Surely it depends on a number of factors: number of rooms, type of flooring, frequency of vacuuming and so on.
I have a Dyson cordless (its about 5 years old) and live in a smallish 3 bed 3 living room house, 2 cats, hard floors downstairs and carpet on stairs / bedrooms. I vacuum daily downstairs in about 5 minutes flat, and upstairs weekly including the stairs. I wash the filter out regularly. My vacuum is fantastic. If I wanted to give the whole house a good vacuum, moving all the furniture etc, I’d have to do upstairs first then recharge it for half an hour before doing downstairs. It’s great for vacuuming furniture, curtains and getting cobwebs from high corners. Most importantly, I have arthritis in my wrists and it’s been a godsend after throwing away the cumbersome plug in.

BeepBoopBop · 20/07/2025 18:38

Love my V11 Absolute - big house in the country with three dogs. I don’t need to vacuum every room each session, but do the downstairs daily.

snakeface · 20/07/2025 20:45

Miele Miele Miele.
Light for a corded hoover. Brilliant on everything. Worth every penny

blondiepigtails · 21/07/2025 09:21

Absolutely love the Dyson V10. Bought it so that I can run round daily. Copes with a labrador unless she's in full on moult but I'm an expert in dismantling etc. No good for builders dust or leaves or full on grot so will have to resort to the old Henry.
I can clean most of our 5 bed house with the medium setting. I tend to do upstairs, put it back on charge and do other jobs, then come back to finish vacuuming downstairs.
