Are cordless vacuum cleaners worth it?

Just looking at cordless vacuum cleaners, I love the simplicity of not having to faff with a cable.

But it looks like you need to charge them for ages and they don't last that long.

Can they work as a substitute for a normal hoover, or are they only realty meant to be a supplemental thing, for quick jobs?

I'm a cleaner and don't think they are very good. A customer has a £600 Dyson..we both agree it's useless for the money. Another has a shark,, customer thinks it's ok but on hard floor it won't pick up small hard things, grit etc. I have to pick up.
I think they are ok for short bursts if not too much debris to pick up

Huggersunite · 18/07/2025 12:39

For everyday vacuuming for dog hair etc amazing for your weekly hoover get a Henry too, I have both my Dyson comes out daily and Henry weekly.

ForHeartyPoet · 18/07/2025 12:42

I have a Shark cordless and for myself and one cat it’s totally fine. I use it every day and probably charge once a week for an hour or two. But it wouldn’t be great if I needed heavy duty hoovering daily or had a huge house.

In my experience they are ok for a while but soon keep blocking up and don't hold a charge for very long. I bought an expensive Shark one and can't use it. I bought a corded miele instead which is perfect

Rosesanddaffs · 18/07/2025 12:46

@newhouseplans I have a gtech and eufy robot hoover, both are brilliant and I would recommend

MsJemimaPuddleDuck · 18/07/2025 12:49

I had a gtech and then a vax both cordless they are sh^t compared to my plug in shark hoover.
I will never buy a cordless again. The suction on them are rubbish & yes, i cleaned them weekly!

Brightasarainbow · 18/07/2025 12:53

I have a cordless Dyson as main hoover, but when it needs replacing I'll be going back to corded. I can do my whole house on the medium setting, but high setting only lasts two rooms before running out of charge...

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/07/2025 12:54

My Dyson cordless is worth it for the stairs and other small jobs where my big Dyson can't reach., but I can't do a 4 bedroom house with it.

Truthfully? No. I love my Dyson V15 but it doesn’t last long enough, and suction on high power - forget the battery lasting long at all (10-mins). If you’ve a large area for vacuum, get a plug in. If it is just a small area or stairs, cordless is probably okay.

But regardless of normal, or high power suction, the Dyson V15 is nowhere near as good as the plug in Miele (or old Dyson it replaced).

Thanks everyone!

Hmm, maybe not then.

My Henry has just died and I'm looking for something easier to move around, I find Henry a annoyingly cumbersome. But I want it to work just as well!

Maybe something like this, then?

I tried a Shark and a Dyson but I ended up going back to my trusty Henry. They didn’t seem to be powerful enough and quite often the battery died before I was done and I only live in a small three-bed semi. So, in my opinion they’re not worth it.

Fragmentedbrain · 18/07/2025 13:09

I hate Henry and I don't understand how people can find it useful. It's a great massive burden you have to heft around the house and it tips over very easily. I keep it but only to hoover up anything disgusting I don't want to sully my lovely sleek cordless shark with.

Fragmentedbrain · 18/07/2025 13:10

Like I dont even think a Henry cleans well it's just a big sucky hose, the attachments seem shite

PinkyCow · 18/07/2025 13:13

I got a hetty one and hate it. I just use my normal Hetty. Unless its on my rug because the suction on the cordless is shit so it doeant lift the rug up.

TakeMeToKernow · 18/07/2025 13:16

I don’t know why corded vacuums gave me so much rage. For some reason the plugging and unplugging and moving and wrangling and lugging…. Gargh, it just was awful.

I love my cordless Dyson. Three bed bungalow. So easy to just grab and run round.

I don’t really understand the charging issue - mine lives in the wall hung charger.

If I had a two storey house, I would probably have a second one that lived upstairs for extra convenient convenience 😁

Cos corded ones suck!!!

icantgetnopeace · 18/07/2025 13:19

I’ve got a shark cordless and it’s shite. My old corded Dyson was far superior.
I stayed at a holiday cottage that had a Bosch cordless and that was much better than my shark.

AutumnFog · 18/07/2025 13:21

I find it great. Put it on charge after each use which is far less effort than plugging a corded one in each room, and so lightweight that the DC can even easily use it.
We got rid of our corded one as never used it anymore.

Ilovelowry · 18/07/2025 13:24

I've got a bosch. Best thing I've ever bought. I look forward to using it daily.

I tried all the cordless ones in John Lewis.

The bosch was by far the best and I had a £££££ budget, but still got the bosch which was cheap.

Pascha · 18/07/2025 13:30

Does my cordless old Dyson do a great job? Probably not.
Does it do an OK one on a daily basis? Yes.
Would I get away without a big heavy corded one too? No.
Do I actually bother to vacuum more often because it's light and easy? Bloody sure I do.

Yes, it's not perfect. My floors are cleaner though because I actually bother to do it. So for me, it worth having the cordless one.

goingtotown · 18/07/2025 13:32

I use a cordless for a quick vacuum, it does an ok job. My Henry is used for a thorough clean, I wouldn’t be without it.

Foreverm0re · 18/07/2025 13:34

Love the convenience of cordless but when I replace mine (soon hopefully) I wouldn’t go for a Dyson again.

user4287964265 · 18/07/2025 13:36

We have a corded shark upstairs for carpet.
A battery Shark downstairs on tiles/wooden floors and the carpeted stairs.
A robot Eufy that is great for everyday.
A Henry for industrial messes…all have their good/bad points.

Fragmentedbrain · 18/07/2025 13:40

Does everyone else have done other sort of Henry? Mine has to be RIGHT over anything on max power to suck.
