I swear to God this dog will be the end of me

He’s 16. Weird parentage so he’s a Heinz 57. DNA test says he’s a corgi x border x patterdale x lab He’s deaf as a post unless it’s a fly. In which case he’s all over that. Can’t really see very well. So imagine my surprise when he killed 2 rats tonight that next doors car has lovingly deposited through our kitchen window. I have Bought a screen that hopefully stops this happening again. However tonight old dog and full border terrier have worked as a weird team, she batted it out from under the fridge and he killed it extremely fast.

I had already called a pest control bloke who I need to cancel now. I didn’t expect the old boy to actually be able to sort the unwanted guests. He’s now asleep dreaming happily and his ‘friends’ are in the bin. 🤢🤮

please tell me I’m not alone in havinv an insane dog

I swear to God this dog will be the end of me

He is so handsome!!! What a helpful old chap

BunnyRuddington · 16/07/2025 04:27

Sounds like hes done yoi a favour and saved you a few quid! What a helpful pair they are GrinFlowers

Vates · 16/07/2025 04:33

They're a pair of cuties! I could do with him in my flat as there is a rat that visits every other month. The thuds it creates when it jumps around is immense, I thought next door's cat had got in my flat at first! Thankfully I am not scared of rodents (used to have pet rats). I haven't seen or heard any rodent activity in the last few weeks though.

My Sister has a whippet who's 11 and a half, I look after her twice a week. My Sister was working from home and had to keep getting in from the garden as she is a sun seeker and was trying to sunbathe in 30 heat! She rejects the cooling mat and acts offended if you try and put a fan near her.

Whippets and greyhounds are serious sun lovers! My mum has a retired greyhound and he gets annoyed when his desired sun puddle has the audacity to move so he will bark until she moves his bed back into the sun. When it’s raining, snowing or just cold he will refuse point blank to go for a wee until she physically places him outside but he makes it known it’s not acceptable behaviour. Also his name is Paul and it suits him to a tee!!

Aww your boy and his gorgeous elderly sidekick
He was giving you a precious gift., pity he didn’t hang around to take it back out
Blesshim Age knows no bounds
I have a cherished 9 year old Westie who can still outrun much bigger dogs given the opportunity!

Empress13 · 16/07/2025 04:50

Aww they look mischievous the pair of em cuties! 16? Wow as the saying goes there’s life in the old dog yet!

Magpie50 · 16/07/2025 04:55

Sounds like he's doing brilliant for his age though....
And 2 terrierists? Very brave!😁

I also have dogs that regularly test my patience.
My 16 yr old is blind, no teeth and has dementia. Spends most of her time pottering around the house, often backwards for some reason!
The 17 yr old is just arthritic and deaf as a post. If she can't eat it or sleep on it she's not interested!
And the 13 yr old is just mental!

He is! My mum got him because she wanted a nice calm chill dog after a chocolate lab we had passed away. Then 3 yrs later I met DH and she started a uni course and she begged me to take him because he was a real nightmare with an absolutely insane prey drive. The other pup she had she took to uni as a special permission thing. (Vicar school) so I moved him in with me & DH, and he’s still around! He sleeps like the dead, and can’t hear his own name but has mega beef with flies, but other than that I think he’s doing ok!

your pups sound so lovely! It’s an honour to have an old dog (except when they bring you a dead rat they have proudly just killed ) !

Aww, that picture has just really given me a good start to the day! 😊
Thankyou...

what exactly is “insane” about this?

Ultimately dogs have innate instincts that you can’t quite train out of them, they instinctively will go for prey especially if the prey is randomly inside their home. It’s just dogs doing what they have spent 100s of years being bred to do…

Your dog having selective hearing doesn’t mean he can’t see, smell, or sense the presence of rats in close proximity, in his territory. It’s just a dog doing dog things?

657904I · 16/07/2025 05:23

Still keep the pest control visit - there might be more rats about, there might be things they can do to deter further rats, plus they might be able to dispose of the dead ones you have.

Vates · 16/07/2025 05:27

@HoofleWoofle Paul sounds fabulous! All sight hounds are my absolute favourite dogs. Belle will only put three legs down when it is frosty or there is snow. And my Sister's other whippet (passed 3 years ago now) was even worse, you had to physically lift him outside too!

Here is Belle and her very long snoot

I swear to God this dog will be the end of me
MrBallenIsaFittie · 16/07/2025 06:05

Awww he's not insane.....he is a very good boy!
At least you know you have a Head Of Pest Control Officer living with you, get him a little badge and sleep soundly knowing he has your back😊

I mean he’s 16. He has cataracts and genuinely sleeps like the dead. I didn’t anticipate him being interested in catching a rat let alone actually managing it! This is a dog who sleeps approximately 22 hours a day

It’s like the wilful deafness. The skills and knowledge are still there, he’s just been choosing not to bother using them 🤣

I too have an old dog. He’s forgotten his words, and is using a random selection of bark and door scratch to inform us of any problems. I used to know what was need from his tone, now I’m having to guess! It’s like having a newborn.

HerVagestyTheQueef · 16/07/2025 08:20

What a pair of cuties! That pic made my morning. Along with Belle and her long snoot.

Nice that old dog is still contributing to the household with his pest control capabilities!

PrincessFluffyPants · 16/07/2025 08:47

Love the photos, great start to the day.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 16/07/2025 08:50

They are adorable!

I always say that my Patterdale will be the death of me. I've had dogs all my adult life and she (now nearing 11) is the hardest work of any dog (and I've had Border Collies!) I have ever owned. She will run all day, chase and kill anything that can't run faster than her, and bark at anything, real or imaginary.

Love her to bits, but my next dog will be something big, sleepy and trainable!

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 16/07/2025 08:57

What a dastardly duo!!
The ddoggy version of Del Boy and Rodney maybe?

LadyRoughDiamond · 16/07/2025 09:22

Another voice saying don’t cancel the pest control people - the issue is where the rats are getting in. Unless you identify and deal with this, there will be more …which might be a good thing for your good boy!

I have to agree with this! Patterdales and patterdale xs is something I never want to own again. He’s been trainable but oh my god his prey drive Even at 16 is so high

I didn’t cancel him. He found a hole in a pipe at door level so fitted a rat flap and now hopefully they’ll never come back!
