He’s 16. Weird parentage so he’s a Heinz 57. DNA test says he’s a corgi x border x patterdale x lab He’s deaf as a post unless it’s a fly. In which case he’s all over that. Can’t really see very well. So imagine my surprise when he killed 2 rats tonight that next doors car has lovingly deposited through our kitchen window. I have Bought a screen that hopefully stops this happening again. However tonight old dog and full border terrier have worked as a weird team, she batted it out from under the fridge and he killed it extremely fast.

I had already called a pest control bloke who I need to cancel now. I didn’t expect the old boy to actually be able to sort the unwanted guests. He’s now asleep dreaming happily and his ‘friends’ are in the bin. 🤢🤮

please tell me I’m not alone in havinv an insane dog

It’s like the wilful deafness. The skills and knowledge are still there, he’s just been choosing not to bother using them 🤣

I too have an old dog. He’s forgotten his words, and is using a random selection of bark and door scratch to inform us of any problems. I used to know what was need from his tone, now I’m having to guess! It’s like having a newborn.

My 16 yr old is the same. Maybe its the dementia but she has forgotten how to bark. If she gets excited about something she does this weird, high pitched 'oaaoohhhuuoooooaaanxjghcdsfa!!' kinda noise that scares the beejesus out of me!!

She's always been a character though. Barely weighs 5Ibs and as a chihuahua would be a perfect little handbag dog but hates to be carried. If I have to pick her up to cross the road her little legs start spinning to be put down. Not surprising though, she was super active when young and would walk for miles.

She sounds amazing. Chis have so much character!

I love it when old Pups are mischievous, how wonderful that they still have a little sparkle in them to get up to naughtiness.

I think mine may have been milking the ‘I’m really old, my days are numbered, you should give me more treats and be my slave’, somewhat prematurely.

Oh my goodness. They are both as cute as buttons and still very handsome.

Don't worry my almost 12 year old likes to do 'cat patrol' on his last walk of the day where he hunts out any cats that have come out and attempts to chase them back into their houses. I keep him on his lead for this walk now after a cat beat him up (he's small) but it didn't defer him from his vocation.

Dogs are amazing furry gifts to us.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 17/07/2025 11:02

Aww, that’ll be the Patterdale then.
They are absolutely gorgeous OP, you’re very lucky. We love an old dog, had so many rescue dogs of different breeds, though our current one is only 5 and as he’d never lived in a home until last year when we got him, very much still in the dickhead years. Thinks he’s living out the puppy/adolescent years he didn’t get to experience. Golden Retriever though, probably be a dickhead til the very end 🤣.
We used to look after a friends Patterdale/Whippet cross. God I loved her, she was utterly adorable, absolutely loved all humans and followed us around everywhere, big deep dark pools for eyes, made me really seriously search out a similar dog for our next companion. But her owner warned us that despite the butter wouldn’t melt adorableness at home (and her advanced age) we must never let her off the lead because she would run off, she would find something small and furry, and she would kill it. Very much like Liam Neeson. We got a Greyhound in the end 🤣.

I love this and it made me laugh. Two gorgeous little fellas and they look like best pals.

think I win…

Dog ran into a statue and shattered her scapula. Currently on crate rest.

Whippets and greyhounds are serious sun lovers! My mum has a retired greyhound and he gets annoyed when his desired sun puddle has the audacity to move so he will bark until she moves his bed back into the sun. When it’s raining, snowing or just cold he will refuse point blank to go for a wee until she physically places him outside but he makes it known it’s not acceptable behaviour. Also his name is Paul and it suits him to a tee!!

Paul is a fantastic name for a dog.

Yes! our lovely dog walker says he cleans her out of treats and I’m like so stop giving them 🤣🤣. The way to make him love you is 100% via his stomach. He predates our relationship and my husband 100% bought his love with Bonios 🙄. Even now if he sees the treat box he runs to his bed and then inevitably doesn’t catch it.

my mums dog we got at the same time died in September (he was 15) and my aunts dog died in march (he was 10) and she said to me the other day ‘I didn’t expect Hugo to be the last one standing.

Nope, me neither but apart from being deaf, kinda blind and very overweight he has no issues, he’s not incontinent, and he still plays. Im wondering if we need to put a thing of who can look after him in our will if im
honest!

Noo!!! God I couldn’t cope with crate resting either of mine! The old boy did have to emergency surgery in 2018 for eating 36p in change, a child’s sock and a Lego figurine. Then we had to change our holiday to be dog friendly, DH carried him up 2 flights of stairs and lovingly placed him on the floor whereupon he jumped on the bed like a massive knob. Then as the vet gave me a lecture on not letting him be able to eat things that aren’t food after he’s just taken his stitches out- Hugo chewed off his shoelaces. Thankfully I grabbed it in time but the vet apologised 🤦‍♀️
