Cool cities to visit with a 21 yr old

Brunocatmon · 15/07/2025 08:56

Im treating my dd to a 5 day city break for her 21st next year.

We each have to come up with 5 choices then narrow it down.

So fat I have New York and New Orleans.

Not feeling Paris, Rome, Amsterdam she's not that kind of person.

Dont mind long haul but we only have around 5 days in reality.

Thank you

Seville is beautiful

TizerorFizz · 15/07/2025 12:07

@Streamline2 Reykjavik is quiet though. It’s useful for golden circle but if this is for late October it has limitations. It’s not a Halloween sort of place and 5 days there is too long.

You can't beat NYC! Washington DC is another great short break, absolutely loads of excellent (and mostly free) museums and some very recognisable historical monuments. Weather gets very hot in summer in both though. Springtime would be lovely in either, autumn presumably the same

DisforDarkChocolate · 15/07/2025 12:11

Copenhagen, it's fabulous.

Split?
Porto?

Brunocatmon · 15/07/2025 12:16

I'd originally suggested NYC as I took my older dd there for her 21st and we had a great time.

I was just wondering if I was missing any other opportunities by not considering other places.

Someone else suggested Boston and Salem by train. NYC also reachable from Boston isn't it?

You only have 5 days. You can’t see NYC, Boston and Salem in that time.

When is the trip?

If you can go at Halloween then Boston and Salem, or New Orleans would be brilliant.

5 days is quite a lot, though, OP. I was thinking back and also pondering Reykjavik. Then I thought I'd struggle to fill more than 3 days. 5 would be fine for NYC as you knock days out with travel.

You could do, say, Budapest and Vienna and get the train between them.

Reykjavik is fine for 5 days. Book a golden circle tour and a south coast tour. Highlands tour? Possibilities are endless.

What kind of tours are they? Boat tours?

@Brunocatmon Coach tour to Geysir, Waterfalls and probably ancient parliament site is the Golden Circle. You could do a super jeep tour which is fun but Reykjavik is a small city with few attractions. Theres also a volcano exhibition at Perlan. It’s more about restaurants and walking around for a bit and a whale watching trip - few whales about last week. I just would not entertain it for 5 days if DD wants any form of excitement. Several things DD likes simply are not there.

Andoutcomethewolves · 15/07/2025 17:06

Porto, Prague, Krakow, Lisbon and Barcelona are great!

tartyflette · 15/07/2025 17:35

Seville, Granada, Annecy, Montpellier, Biarritz (latter is très chic and also has a beachy/surfer vibe)
San Sebastián if you’re foodies - incomparable tapas/pinxtos - but it also has two beaches and good shopping. Fly to Bilbao and get the train/hire a car. Driving in Spain is absolutely fine.

TidyingThePantry · 15/07/2025 19:43

Ljubljana - beautiful city. Lots to see within a short distance.

DryDay · 15/07/2025 20:06

Can I just wish you and your lovely girl a wonderful trip x

AmusedCat · 15/07/2025 20:12

Ta!inn is wonderful. Also Berlin or Krakow

lljkk · 15/07/2025 21:06

23yo DD hugely enjoyed Athens & Istanbul with her boyfriend in the last year. they walk for hours all day just exploring, and lots of nice meals. DD was especially charmed by cats in Istanbul.

Flixon · 15/07/2025 21:13

Istanbul

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2025 21:37

Lublin in Poland was FANTASTIC when we went

If she likes Gothic Halloween type stuff then Bucharest with an overnight in Brasov (for Bran's castle) might work. You can book it up separately or do a put together trip like this, which also includes a stay in the ice hotel.
