Would you have passed security on this phonecall?

DongDingBell · 14/07/2025 20:30

So, I've just failed security to renew the broadband account.
Could you have answered these questions? - edit for your own accounts. I wouldn't expect you to get my answers!!

Name on account
e-mail address
Exact amount of last bill (to the nearest pence, it changes each month)
Date the money comes out of the account (it changes each month)
Last 4 digits of your bank account (not the card number)

I failed the last 3. Would you have got them all? Or am I spectacularly useless at this stuff?

My answers were: 23-25 pounds - answer 24.97
Just after the first - answer 2July
Not a clue.

Yeah I'd have passed I'd have just checked my banking app for the last two and I know my bank account number.

ooooohlala · 14/07/2025 20:33

I would have passed, but only because I’d have looked it all up while on the phone. I don’t think they expect you to know it off the top of your head.

ForLoveNotMoney · 14/07/2025 20:33

Yes. I know my bank account number and I’d have opened my online banking to see my last payment date and amount.

ClearHoldBuild · 14/07/2025 20:33

Yes I would pass no problem.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 14/07/2025 20:33

Yeah, I would have just checked my online banking on my phone.

LeedsZebra90 · 14/07/2025 20:34

Off the top of my head I'd have failed, but presumably all info is accessible to you?

Weekmindedfool · 14/07/2025 20:34

Yeah you check your statement or online banking for the amount, your account number is on your card or statement,
or you just know it (I do). Bills do usually come out on the same
day each month. Trick is to do it once and get the questions then prepare and call back

cyvguhb · 14/07/2025 20:38

Yes to the bank account, the others I would have looked up while I was on the call on my app

I guess that's probably going to be the most common answer

DongDingBell · 14/07/2025 20:39

OK, it's a me thing.
So, you get sprung with random questions like this, and you'd sit there trying to hold a conversation, and log into another system that needs usernames and passwords and random text message digits to input to access the account?? I don't think I could do those simultaneously either!! I'm obviously a failure at this adult stuff!!

OP posts:
FoxRedPuppy · 14/07/2025 20:41

All my passwords are saved on my phone. My last bill is on my email which is always logged in on my phone.

put phone on speaker. Open email and get last amount and date. Open banking app (Face ID) and find last 4 digits.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/07/2025 20:42

You dont have to hold a conversation, just say bear with while I log into my account to check

Maybe your bank is a complicated one compared to mine but all I have to do is type in my passcode takes a second assuming you are calling on a smart phone

Daffodilsarefading · 14/07/2025 20:48

I wouldn’t know the date the money comes out, for reasons I can’t remember my direct debits come out on various dates. I don’t know the exact amount either, so I would have to quickly log onto my bank account to check.

greencrab · 14/07/2025 20:50

I could have done this but would have had to log into mobile banking (I have the app and it's a four digit passcode and few presses to access recent transactions).

I did massively struggle with security due nsandi who use some sort of security thing from credit agencies data so wanted to know credit limit of credit card account I closed over ten years ago, postcode of a previous address and ask questions about things that happened over ten years ago

It doesn't need user names and passwords. Just a fingerprint.

Why should I know my bank account number?? How often do you need it? Ok, so tonight, but before then??? Probably not since I last set up a direct debit, so moving into this house 3 years ago. What should I be using it for??

The "enter the digits from the text message" I find really hard. Dyslexia plays a role, but it's tricky, and I often mess those up too. And the "what squares contain traffic lights" I reckon I fail those to, as I just felt given more and more to do - like half a dozen....
OK, it's definitely a me problem. But it's so fecking difficult 😥

I would say “I’m just putting you on speaker” then log onto my bank app on my phone using faceID. Then look the details up.
For longer calls I’d log in on the desktop which does need more info but nothing I don’t know.

Overwhelmedandunderfed · 14/07/2025 20:53

My Mum would struggle with the last three because she doesn’t use online banking. It’s a good thing that they take security seriously but I do worry that it’s not helping the slightly older generations, most of this would need a bank statement in front of you if you didn’t do online banking. Voice recognition would be better. Lesson learned for next time OP, don’t beat yourself up, I can’t remember my children’s names sometimes ha x

I wouldn’t be trying to hold a convo, id just say give me a minute while I login type thing

No, I open the banking app on my phone.

FoxRedPuppy · 14/07/2025 20:59

Everything in my phone is Face ID, no enter numbers from a text. And I have an iPhone so it does that for me (it shows you the numbers and lets you do one click to enter them.

No need to hold a conversation. Just say “gimme two minutes while I look this up” and then go and look

Bank account on my phone is my fingerprint, so pop the call on speaker phone and open banking app and find the transaction. Card number I'd say give me a couple of mins, grab my purse and get my card, or again look on online banking

ScaryM0nster · 14/07/2025 21:03

If I really wanted to, I could have done. Slowly. On speaker phone. Somewhere I could concentrate and if I knew in advance the call would be a faff.

If I’d assumed it was a quick straightforward call and had my helpful 3 yr old in the background then no way.

Thunderdcc · 14/07/2025 21:05

For Santander I can now say "my voice is my password" which doesn't actually sound very secure but makes me feel like I work for MI5.

And in answer to the OP, I could only find the amount and date by opening my online banking, so I would need to use the land-line to phone. I couldn't even hazard a guess which day it comes out I have absolutely no idea.
