Would you have passed security on this phonecall?

So, I've just failed security to renew the broadband account.
Could you have answered these questions? - edit for your own accounts. I wouldn't expect you to get my answers!!

Name on account
e-mail address
Exact amount of last bill (to the nearest pence, it changes each month)
Date the money comes out of the account (it changes each month)
Last 4 digits of your bank account (not the card number)

I failed the last 3. Would you have got them all? Or am I spectacularly useless at this stuff?

My answers were: 23-25 pounds - answer 24.97
Just after the first - answer 2July
Not a clue.

If I knew I was going to be asked then yes. I have the info but getting it off my phone in a hurry is painful. I know my bank details.

But-ages ago I set up phone banking with a Building Society for my mum who had dementia. I tried to move the account to on line banking and they asked my my original password that I'd used 6-7 years ago. No clue, tried the obvious, failed. never did get the account set up. Painful.

Hoppinggreen · 15/07/2025 20:31

I would have been able to answer all of those but would have had to check in my banking app

KiriG · 16/07/2025 01:10

Bank account number is also in my App so even if I didn’t know I could pass

SD1978 · 16/07/2025 01:14

Also would have juts logged into the banking app whilst on the phone (trying not to be huffy, but probably failing a bit) and given them the info in a couple of minutes.

GentleSheep · 16/07/2025 01:17

No, not without checking various places for the amounts and dates! Which would have gotten me flustered. Actually something similar to this happened a few years back when I was trying to get access renewed to a particular bank account and they wanted me to give the last 3 payments in and how much I thought was in the account. Of course I couldn't remember! Spent ages on the phone with a nice man who couldn't of course help me out. Eventually I gave up and went to look for the details I needed and eventually found them in a paper file, got on the phone again and went through everything all over again, this time successfully. What a palaver! I hate feeling that they think you are trying to get access to someone else's money! Was more than I remember having so that's why I got the third degree.

McTootsBagpipes · 16/07/2025 01:20

I would have to look it up. I recently failed a security check because one of the questions was when did I open current account, which I opened in 1994 but fuck knows what month it was. Ridiculous question to be asking, and I can’t even look it up on my phone.

pizzaHeart · 16/07/2025 02:07

If I knew about questions in advance I would prepare answers but otherwise I wouldn’t have a clue about last 3. I would also feel stressed because of the pressure and it wouldn’t help at all.
I suspect DH would be the same.

MermaidMummy06 · 16/07/2025 02:14

I work in a professional area where I access clients info daily. If I call I have to pass multiple security checks, including all the client's personal & account info (not bank accounts - investments our govt welfare/pension Dept) AND our details which they all want different things for.

There have been a few times they've stumped me by asking for adviser cides I don't have (our useless support person who doesn't log it).

It's a pain. I just make them wait while I find the info (which sometimes means trawling through documents on file or our client system.

If you can, do it online. So much easier!

JudgeBread · 16/07/2025 02:22

I'd have had to say "hang on a sec" to get the exact amount of the last bill, but I could chuck them on speaker phone and log into my banking app and give them that information in about 30 seconds. That would also tell me the date and give me the bank account number so... Yeah. I could pass that no issues.

Glittertwins · 16/07/2025 09:52

Yes, I could because I’d log onto my bank app whilst on the phone and I know my full account / sort code from memory.

mondaytosunday · 16/07/2025 10:04

I just open my bank app while on the phone so I can answer. The tricky bit for when they do this for my phone contract is I have three separate ones (me and my kids) and it isn’t obvious which is mine which is my kids phones …

MellersSmellers · 16/07/2025 11:06

Yes I would probably just get through, with the help of the banking App , but I would find it all a big PIA.
Was that Virgin Media by any chance? 🤣
Sounds like the many conversations we had with their "customer service" in ?India/Singapore over the years. Always ended in tears. We finally binned them off last year.

LER83 · 16/07/2025 11:37

I absolutely hate talking to people on the phone, I get in a right fluster so if I have to ring the bank etc I write everything down and have it in front of me. From previous experience I know what sort of questions they ask so know what to have to hand. Although I did have to ring santander the other day about fraudulent activity on my credit card, and the guy threw in some unexpected questions! I don't know who was more confused by the end of it, but managed to get it sorted!

FlipFlopVibe · 16/07/2025 21:33

DongDingBell · 14/07/2025 20:39

OK, it's a me thing.
So, you get sprung with random questions like this, and you'd sit there trying to hold a conversation, and log into another system that needs usernames and passwords and random text message digits to input to access the account?? I don't think I could do those simultaneously either!! I'm obviously a failure at this adult stuff!!

I say “can you just wait 2 secs whilst I go on my bank app please” then I hold the phone up to my face, it opens immediately and then I scroll through the last few weeks of transactions. They’ll be used to it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/07/2025 22:20

Would have checked banking app

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 16/07/2025 23:02

DongDingBell · 14/07/2025 20:51

Why should I know my bank account number?? How often do you need it? Ok, so tonight, but before then??? Probably not since I last set up a direct debit, so moving into this house 3 years ago. What should I be using it for??

The "enter the digits from the text message" I find really hard. Dyslexia plays a role, but it's tricky, and I often mess those up too. And the "what squares contain traffic lights" I reckon I fail those to, as I just felt given more and more to do - like half a dozen....
OK, it's definitely a me problem. But it's so fecking difficult 😥

Tbf to you I can see how having dyslexia would make all of those things and checking your banking app quickly more difficult!

At least you know now what info you need so you can have it to hand before you call back

WammaDammaDingDong · 16/07/2025 23:07

limescale · 15/07/2025 10:40

So you mean you know the amount of date of a DD even if it changes a small amount each month? For all your outgoings?

This is information which you can usually log into your accounts to see and have it handy for during the phone call?

ladyinwaiting99 · 16/07/2025 23:14

Only by checking my banking app…oddly the one I’d struggle with is the email address because I have 3 personal and two work (old and new job) and I can never remember which I’ve used 🫣

Cece92 · 16/07/2025 23:31

i work for a well known telecommunications company without being outed and we have full name on the account, address including postcode and password. If you can’t answer password then mothers maiden name and of this isn’t answered it’s last 4 digits of the bank account linked to the account. We then send a text to the mobile number on the account with a code. Never been told to ask about bills but I guess unless you make loads of calls out with your package it would change every month and usually bills are set to the same payment date every month too
