Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

I knew a Felix at uni whose brother was called Monty.

Oh, and DS had a friend at nursery called Orion. Not sure if his parents were posh or hippies, though.

Peregrine
Hugh
David
Merrick
Charles

Victoria
Philomena
Jane
Clare
Eleanora

Many of us from the west coast of Ireland have an auntie Philomena knocking around - likely in her 80's now ... none of us were 'posh'.

We also have relatives in our extended family tree called Aloysius, Cornelius, Jarlath, Ignatius, Eugenia, Clement, Lorretto, Majella, Rosario, Columba, Imelda, Gertrude - they had such big families it was easy to run out of names by the 16th and many were named after the Catholic saint associated with the day thery were born.

I'm not sure what is posh in posh circles as I'm not part of them but I met a Clementine and it stuck me as not fitting in here. Sort of has that same vibe a Lettice.

I think Montgomory always sound posh, probably due to the Simpson influence in childhood though.

Beatrice/Beatrix, Ottilie and Margot etc... always feels 'posher' in that I have never known one to live anywhere I have but its more 'middle class' posh than old school money posh.

I recently came across a Tristram - first time I've ever encountered the name outside of George and Mildred! 😄

Edited

I went out with one briefly in the very early 2000s
was a bit of a twat

Inigo and Mungo. Fucking ridiculous names.

I like Mungo (and not just because he's the patron saint of Glasgow)

Iwiicit · 14/07/2025 10:33

I met an Ambrose once. He was very posh indeed.

anotherwordforit · 14/07/2025 10:33

Penelope is very popular and on trend

Henry is a top 10 boys names so will be seen in many places

TinyTear · 14/07/2025 10:33

I think Ptolemy (poor kid)

PinkPauline · 14/07/2025 10:34

@Archert I love those names!

PistachioTiramisu · 14/07/2025 10:34

I went to school with a Quintin and a Mervyn. Also knew a chap called Phaon!

DuskyPink1984 · 14/07/2025 10:34

I know an Araminta, goes by Minty. Very Jilly Cooper.

I remember a football match I took my son to one Saturday morning a few years ago. The opposing tea were from a local, posh village and the team's names sounded like a salad, team members called Sage, Kale and Basil.

Pigtailsandall · 14/07/2025 10:35

When I was pregnant really liked Arabella/Araminta but it was MN that put me off!

I also like Cordelia, Imogen, Ophelia and suchlike. I think they have beautiful cadence

BeanQuisine · 14/07/2025 10:35

Girls: Evangabeline, Nigellenatina, Lesbia Clitoris, Peneloprasia, Aéiou.

Boys: Cucumbrose, Bartholomestus, Architoupée, Tarquondle, Stinker.

CurlewKate · 14/07/2025 10:35

My DS has friends called Ivo and Florian.

Kumquatzest · 14/07/2025 10:35

A lot of the names mentioned are just ordinary names from other cultures or Catholic saint's names etc. Unless you know the family, how would you know if someone's trying to sound "posh"/"rich" or if they're just using a name that's normal in their community?

Hit a nerve here, OP...

No just pointing out reverse snobbery

Oberon and Apollo

DD was in a year group that had Xavier J, Xavier B, Apollo S and Apollo M.

Not massively posh but very international.

I read this as "the most Universal Credit people I know" so that's where I'm at

Me too!

anotherwordforit · 14/07/2025 10:38

Humphrey

I know a Humphrey. Super chap. Went to Eton.

MrsSunshine2b · 14/07/2025 10:39

They never stay posh for that long because they become aspirational and quickly switch to being chavvy.

The only Arabella I know hasn't had a family member in work for generations. Amelia used to be reserved for the fox-hunting types and it's now been the most popular name for years. Ophelia is in the top 100 as is Ottilie.

Seems like people are less likely to take risks with boys names and the old classics stay popular across class divides.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 14/07/2025 10:39

CurlewKate · 14/07/2025 10:35

My DS has friends called Ivo and Florian.

Aren’t they both anti malarial meds??

tinygingermum · 14/07/2025 10:40

Both of my children’s names have been mentioned here and I don’t think we are posh.
