Poshest children’s name’s you’ve heard?

My DS is due to start school in Sept and we recently met his soon to be classmates at an intro session. I have never heard so many stereotypically posh names in one group of people in my life! (The school is close to a very wealthy village…that we don’t live in sadly!) there was an Arabella, a Tarquin, a Jaygo, a Henrietta. So that’s what inspired this thread…what do you consider the top 5 poshest names you’ve ever heard of?

I know a couple of young Orions. Def not posh!

My cat is called Orion - not my choice

Edited we're not posh at all

SIL called her child Kale.

I'm green with envy

Nimrod? I put that as a joke on one of these threads a few weeks ago because it's my dog's nickname 😄. Along with Barold and Nedmund...which are from a thread ages ago and I don't have a clue what it was about!

Yes really! Not shortened to anything (Nim? Rod?). I also know a horse called Nimrod which I think is nice.

Haha Tarquin immediately sprung to mind even just seeing the title of your post….🤣

Imisscoffee2021 · 14/07/2025 15:17

In Surrey I heard a woman yelling as her purple and orange uniform cladded boy ran across the road " STOP BARNABUS STOP!"

Also overheard a double barrelled first name with something Zeus, can't remember the first name but think something like "Jonathan-Zeus can you get down from there"

And for a girls name it was Circe. Woman clearly sick of people thinking it was Game of Thrones inspired as sounds very similar to how Cersei sounds rather than the Greek myth origin.

OP how would you feel if you saw a thread about "chav" names? Cos they are stereotypical "posh" names they are fair game? Pretty sure you wouldn't be happy if I said "let's hear the chaviest names at a school"?

Actually that would be hilarious…..
Joking of course…..

friskybivalves · 14/07/2025 15:17

There was a girl at a nearby school called Atlanta Wardell-Yerburgh (pronounced Yaah-bruh) which always struck me as reading high on the poshometer.

Karistyleaftea · 14/07/2025 15:17

Barold still tickles me, such a funny name.

John and Mary.

However "Plum" does it for me. A classmate of dd who is now grown up. Can anyone guess the actual name?

Damson?

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/07/2025 15:21

Tristan

I love this so much! 😍

Splendid name isn't it? 😉

Yet not one of those sound genuinely posh. MC aspirational, yes. posh no.

I was thinking pretentious rather than aspirational. Unless there's a connection with the country of origin. I taught a Demetrius but he was from a Greek family so it made sense.

Agree.

Lorrymum · 14/07/2025 15:23

Portia (Merchant Of Venice). All five daughters were named after characters in Shakespearean plays. Very posh but all very down to earth.

liveforsummer · 14/07/2025 15:23

My dd is in a sport frequented by posh people and we know a Ptarmigan, a vanilla and 2 Scouts although many of them although Jessica is by far the most common name we come across 😆

fudgesmummy · 14/07/2025 15:23

When naming our cats we got our inspiration by Googling “posh boy names”
We currently have Hugo, Oscar, Rupert and Jasper.
We also had Raife who was sadly hit by a car 😭
My standby names (if I’m ever lucky enough to have more cats) are Thaddeus, Rudyard, Ptolemy and Hector!!

Tristan

Loads of fans of All Creatures Great and Small have used Tristan. Many of them not having ever heard of Tristan and Isolde.

There are many many people who have never read Greek mythology and still think J K R made up the name Hermione.

Tristan

I mean Tristan's mum definitely shops at Waitrose.

But does that make her properly posh?

Plum - Victoria

Plum - Victoria

Did anyone have the Victoria plum books as a child?

My GM had a set at her house. She had a kind of petunia as a hat, and I think she lived in a plum.

I know a Demetrius but he is Greek too.

Very ironic 😁

Ah it was Jane Eyre, I thought it was maybe Tess of the D’urbervilles as I'd read both at school (a long time ago).

In Tess, it's Angel Clare.

Laboheme78 · 14/07/2025 15:33

Jago.

Allegra.

But if I had my time again, I would give both my children more outrageous names. They both have classic names, with more unusual middle names.

I would have called my daughter Persephone, Percy for short. Just didn’t have the balls to do it at the time!

Vanilla? That sounds the opposite of posh.

Emerald Fennel sounds a posh name without having to know anything about her, (her dad was a famous jeweller who went to Eton).

How do you pronounce Portia @ItsameLuigi?

I know a StJohn but it’s his surname (Sinjun)

Pour-sha

I was at school with both a Portia and a St John.... state grammar...
