What's your dog doing in the heatwave?

Ddog is not very happy about the lack of walks or ball throwing, currently picking new spot every few mins in the shade to mope and sigh loudly in because I'm sunbathing and hates to be at least 1cm away from my side at all times. We've done snuffle mat for dinner, a few enrichment games but will still mope til we take her a walk which obviously we can't right now.
Making me feel guilty but also ruining my joyfulness at the weather because I'm feeling bad.
There's a lake nearby which we'll go to later to let ddog swim, but the car is a million degrees which will be intolerable, why do dogs make you feel bad about everything, 😂
She routinely makes me feel bad for WFH, or just not petting her 24/7

Buy her a children's tent to rest in in the garden. Then she can sulk or sleep in cool comfort.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 13/07/2025 17:54

Thankfully our dog is happy on one walk a day and it's usually later in the day (he has epilepsy and this works for well him). He's snoozing and occasionally sunbathing which I restict in the very high temps. He likes tug games, gentle fetch in the house, Find It, training, and sleeping in the kitchen! He has a couple of games but isn't too bothered.

Marshtit · 13/07/2025 17:54

we are both indoors
if i go outside she cooks in the sun which is not good for her

she sleeps a lot!

She wants to be in the garden all day. She seeks shade and snoozes and occasionally sunbathes. We’ve just got back from half an hour in the woods (all completely shaded and a short car ride there) and she swam in the streams.

if it’s above 28c we put her cooling vest on for a few hours midday.

Changingplace · 13/07/2025 17:55

My dog normally puts in a formal complaint if he doesn’t get two walks a day but he’s barely moved today in this heat, he’s mooched outside for a couple of wees but aside from that is totally flopped out and has just snoozed all day.

Whu · 13/07/2025 17:57

Lovely walk at 7am in the woods and brook, followed by paddling pool in the morning and then indoors for snoozes on the cool kitchen floor by lunch. Heading back into the garden for evening pottering soon. They seem happy and settled.

Lovemyassistancedog · 13/07/2025 17:57

Mine started out okay but has got increasingly antsy as the days have gone on. This morning I took him for a 35 minute woodland walk and he managed very nicely. Right now he's cuddling me and we're doing okay as we haven't moved much (watching the tennis!).

Ddog was, up till recently, absolutely impervious to hear or cold, demanding to go out in stifling heat or sub zero temps, but now he's older and has cancer he's been content today with wandering in and out of the house and lying in the shade watching the birds.
I sprayed him down at midday and played a few games with him.

Dearg · 13/07/2025 18:00

It’s 24c where we are so not the raging heat that many are experiencing, but my black lab is not happy about it. We had an early walk by the river in the morning and then a very short walk in nearby woods by a stream.
In both cases she has been in the water, but it’s not really deep enough for swimming, so more just splashing about.
I have dampened her paws a few times and she’s currently watching the tennis with me - she’s on her cool mat.
We are forecast rain tomorrow so she should have her regular 3 walks 🤞🏻

ButtSurgery · 13/07/2025 18:00

Long walk at 7am. Sleeps all day. Occasionally whines by the back door then refuses to pee. Long walk about 8pm in a large shaded field.

She has a coolmat which she is spending a lot of time on. We have a small open plan house with a south facing rear, so it stays closed up by day at the moment with heat resistant blinds up to try to keep that temperature down.

Shes part husky and malamute though, so this heat has been too much - the garden has been measuring 36 in the shade this week.

A particularly clever border collie?

abracadabra1980 · 13/07/2025 18:03

I always stock up on marrowbones from the butcher or Morrisons and freeze them raw. They come out of the freezer raw and keep my dogs cool and entertained for a good 1-2 hrs depending upon size. I then wash the used bones, cook bags of cheap, frozen veg (10 mins in microwave for a whole bag), puree it and stuff them up again then re- freeze. Sometimes I re-stuff with wet food. Just depends what I’ve got hanging about. They are fattening and I has to use veg a lot more when Ddog puts on a kilo or two. They are very lethargic in this weather so lots of brain games, scent work (Lab) and grooming (Newf) too. Oh, and showers every day. They’re not keen albeit will jump in the sea in winter, no problem 🙄 bit it keeps them cool. Always hose down before we leave for a short ‘sniffy walk).

Chateaudiaries · 13/07/2025 18:08

Chasing squirrels and trying to lie in the sun, she never learns! I do move her into the shade or she sleeps on our stone floors in the middle of the kitchen so we have to work around herHmmSmile

FoxRedPuppy · 13/07/2025 18:13

Lots of sleeping and huffing. I’ll take him for a walk later. I got him a paddling pool, but he hates it and won’t go near it. He will happily jump in any puddle/pond/stream/river etc. but a pool filled by me is not ok.

HappiestSleeping · 13/07/2025 18:18

I walked my dog, and customers dogs early before the heat. I take them where there is plenty of water to swim in / drink.

One customer yesterday was out and I brought the dog home so it wasn't alone all day (at customer's request), and it ran around in the garden anyway, so apparently wasn't bothered by the heat.

My van has air conditioning, and I am not walking them on hot pavements, so with walking early, it is all still doable.

Marshtit · 13/07/2025 18:26

try and keep all the curtains closed in the house all day to keep the sun out

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/07/2025 18:36

Back door has been open all day and they have snoozing in the house, or snoozing in the garden. Taking them out for a walk later when it’s cooler.

thistimelastweek · 13/07/2025 18:41

Hiding under a chair with the occasional dash into the garden to shout at the pigeons.
Can't abandon all duties just because of a bit of heat.

spiderlight · 13/07/2025 18:46

Mine has had a very early proper walk and a lovely long afternoon mooch around our local super-dog-friendly, air conditioned branch of The Range, and has spent the rest of the day wearing a succession of my migraine ice wraps, either sleeping or shouting at me to turn the heat down.

farmlass · 13/07/2025 18:47

Ddog is now expecting long run with the quad bike as per usual of an evening .
A gun dog and never stops . I’ll hit the woods and streams this evening and she’ll get plenty of fun .
It’s about 19 here this evening so all good.

Is your dog my dog, won't touch a paddling pool but all over rivers, lakes and seas

Glad to see mine isn't the only huff puff, we took her to the lake and she is sufficiently exercised and wet.

Can't do frozen bones as she's a cocker and gets really growly around bones, it's literally the only this she's possessive about.
I do find dog ownership a challenge but it really ramps up when they can't do the things that they're so used to, she's a show cocker but may as well be a working one half the time, needs to be occupied constantly!!!

Mine is half show cocker. He can’t have bones as all he does is bury them. Usually in my bed. Things you don’t want to find under your pillow….

terracelane23 · 13/07/2025 20:49

We’re up early so ours had a 2 hour forest walk around 7am, then a shorter forest walk in the shade around 4pm. They’ve been in and out of the garden all day. We’ve got 4 and some like the heat more than others
