How much water do you drink?

I'm suffering from a UTI which after nearly 2 days of antibiotics is clearing up nicely. The nurse told me to drink double what I drink normally as it's hot and do clear everything out which got me wondering.

How much water (actual water) do you drink on a daily basis? I usually aim for 2l but I wonder if I've just been a bit dehydrated in this weather hence the infection so should be aiming for 3l instead of 2.

Currently on 2.5l from 8am this morning, will fill my litre cup up and aim to finish that before the morning.

I don’t drink any plain water. About 2L of other liquids though.

None. I hate water. Have had two cups of tea so far.

@Cososomwow! I’m going to give this a go - I’ve been feeling ‘wishy washy’ / mildly seasick for months now and have recently been referred by GP to the cardiac unit for 24 hr BP monitoring. It’s usually on the low side so I’m not too bothered but I’d like to know why I actually feel like this/what is causing it.
Dehydration has been mentioned and I really struggle to drink water and don’t eat big meals - it’s just the way I’ve always been. I drink about 4-6 cups of tea per day. I also have a spasming bladder so water can make me go to the loo non stop. (And tea if I haven’t eaten enough). Recently piled on weight due to menopause and a sugar craving (never liked sweet things before menopause), so will give the water another go. Thanks for the info.

@abracadabra1980Similar to how I’ve been feeling, did you ask your GP to refer you or was it their suggestion? I’m also getting palpitations but the GP said that was normal!

Also worth considering/ruling out POTS.

@Ivyy I'm not sure whether you mean referral for the spasming bladder or the wishy/washy seasick, blood pressure issue, but yes, I was referred by my GP for both. Blood pressure is dropping when I stand up, (it's low as a rule), however nothing back from GP regarding 24/7 BP monitoring yet - was just told if it had been urgent I'd have heard by now (I kind of knew it wasn't). By process of elimination I'm assuming it's a combo of dehydration and /or allergic rhinitis which I have permanently. Urology Consultant was amazing but it was a very long wait to see him.

@Thefanisonhigh POTS is what I was referred for. I've not had a follow up report yet. I did have a change in BP when standing from sitting, when tested by my GP. Not sure whether it went up significantly, or down. It's always on the low side. She did tell me to drink more water.

I don't force myself to drink more than I want. The myth of needing X mandatory litres a day is largely debunked now as it flushes out the good stuff and leads to deficiencies.

If thirsty/active and/or the weather is hot I want more, otherwise I go by how I feel and I don't drink water for the sake of it. Enough to keep me feeling OK, but not addictive drinking of water either. Other fluids/fruit etc. add to hydration anyway.

Water bottles are a fashion accessory now, and they annoy me, especially the big barrels with measurements on them, they must weigh a ton. lol 😊

Thefanisonhigh · 15/07/2025 11:52

@abracadabrayou can try these whilst you’re waiting for referral. https://www.eds.clinic/articles/pots-test-poor-mans-tilt-table-and-nasa-lean-test

Recently at least 2l of water (with squash) a day - average 2.5l a day over the week. Pre that I'd barely get 1l a day.
Tea is on top of that and in the hot weather I've been having a can or two of fizzy drink (sugar free) on top of that.

RabbitsRock · 15/07/2025 12:00

I used to be really good & have at least 2 litres a day but it’s gone right down. Not sure why as I always feel so much better when I hydrate. Need to replace my “ encouraging” bottle that DH bought me as it kept leaking.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/07/2025 12:03

Not so much water, but lots of tea (no milk) and recently, Pukka 3 ginger.

Blondebrownorred · 15/07/2025 12:17

Probably too much. My wee is clear. I only drink water, nothing else except an occasional cup of tea.

VeryStressedMum · 17/07/2025 09:54

I aim for about 1.5L of plain water as I drink other things too.
Too little water causes problems and too much causes problems so who knows what we are supposed to be drinking. Aim for your wee to be light straw colour not clear
