How much water do you drink?

I'm suffering from a UTI which after nearly 2 days of antibiotics is clearing up nicely. The nurse told me to drink double what I drink normally as it's hot and do clear everything out which got me wondering.

How much water (actual water) do you drink on a daily basis? I usually aim for 2l but I wonder if I've just been a bit dehydrated in this weather hence the infection so should be aiming for 3l instead of 2.

Currently on 2.5l from 8am this morning, will fill my litre cup up and aim to finish that before the morning.

About 2 litres daily. I don’t drink tea or coffee or soft drinks so water is all I have.

I'm the opposite to you. Only drink tea and coffee so probably have 4-5l of water a day if tea/coffee counts🤭

Ironfloor269 · 13/07/2025 17:33

About 6 litres minimum.

MrsSethGecko · 13/07/2025 17:33

3l water a day in hot weather, more if I'm at work because I'm standing beside gas ovens all day.

A lot of tea and coffee. Maybe 3-4 litre of tea and coffee combined.

@LobsterWeb have you always had one kidney? Ignore if it’s too intrusive to ask, only
my brother lost one in a car accident and he’s always drank lots of water too as advised.

No, I donated a kidney. During the pre-donation testing I did see a significant difference in GFR and creatinine levels when I had been drinking more water, so it really does make a difference. Doesn't matter so much for your average person with two kidneys, but with one kidney it's more important. I hope your brother is OK. That sounds traumatic!

horseplay12 · 13/07/2025 17:35

I drink about 10 pints of water (pint glasses at work) daily - I have a kidney reflux though so have always needed to drink loads to keep my kidneys clear and flushed through. Drink more when it’s hot though too.

Missey85 · 13/07/2025 17:37

Does coffee count? Otherwise it's a no I don't like plain water

BakewellGin1 · 13/07/2025 17:43

3 litres a day is my normal
Plus electrolytes
But I currently go to the gym 5/6 times a week and run 3/4 times and its hot.

SingleAHF · 13/07/2025 17:47

None. I drink 2 pints of tea soon after rising then usually nothing but maybe the odd swig to take medication.

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2025 17:50

I drink about three pints of water during the day, plus lots of tea and the occasional coffee. I try to drink more water, but I forget.

abracadabra1980 · 13/07/2025 17:54

@Cososomwow! I’m going to give this a go - I’ve been feeling ‘wishy washy’ / mildly seasick for months now and have recently been referred by GP to the cardiac unit for 24 hr BP monitoring. It’s usually on the low side so I’m not too bothered but I’d like to know why I actually feel like this/what is causing it.
Dehydration has been mentioned and I really struggle to drink water and don’t eat big meals - it’s just the way I’ve always been. I drink about 4-6 cups of tea per day. I also have a spasming bladder so water can make me go to the loo non stop. (And tea if I haven’t eaten enough). Recently piled on weight due to menopause and a sugar craving (never liked sweet things before menopause), so will give the water another go. Thanks for the info.

How do you this without ending up needing the loo all day?

I've been consciously upping my water consumption this hot summer but normally I don't drink anywhere near enough water.
I think a lot of it depends on your activity levels and the climate and your own metabolism.
Just remember if you're drinking two three four liters a day on a very hot day when you're out ,and presumably perspiring, don't forget to replenish your electrolytes. There are special powders and drinks for that.
Drinking so much plain water will wash away electrolytes particularly sodium.
You can get into trouble if you are deplete in electrolytes.

I have electrolytes that I use for running and was going to have some but Google was a bit on the fence about drinking them with a UTI, it can make symptoms worse.

I had Covid recently and got… dehydrated.

Facebook spammed me with advert for Vidrate electrolyte powders, something like 3.99 delivery and a massive box of different flavours as a free sample.

I’ve genuinely tripled the amount of water I drink since. Dunno why it goes down so much easier.

Well I was just giving advice generally of course, you know when people drink three to four liters of water a day you risk washing out nutrients and electrolytes.
But that's good OP that you thought about that and Googled it.
Good information to consider for anyone who takes electrolytes but also has a UTI.

I've just had one tablet since my symptoms are a lot better and the coffee I had this morning hasn't made things worse.

Maybe worth having one daily even when I'm not training hard and drinking more water since I seem to be very prone to these infections and the only thing that will shift them is antibiotics.

I do need the loo all day 😄

I work in a school so I go to the toilet after every lesson plus during lunch and after school. Basically, I’ve just got used to going to the loo many, many times a day. But drinking loads of water massively improves my mood so it’s a small price to pay.

Allmarbleslost · 13/07/2025 21:30

Absolutely none. I drink tea and coffee (both decaf) and Diet Coke.

Pickingmyselfup · 14/07/2025 09:25

I find it interesting how so many people say that drinking more water makes them feel/look better. If I drink when I'm thirsty especially in winter I would probably only drink a litre or less, if I make myself drink more it's more like 2l. I have not noticed any difference when I drink more but I also take a shit load of supplements and also haven't noticed any difference either 🫤

OP posts:
GameOfJones · 14/07/2025 09:45

Roughly 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day, plus other fluids. I have consciously had to make myself though as I don't tend to naturally feel thirsty. Our tap water tastes awful too so I keep it in a filter jug in the fridge.... water being nice and cold helps me drink it.

I have a tall glass and I aim to fill it at least 4 times. I will drink a glass of water first thing in the morning when I take my supplements, I'll always have water with lunch and then aim to have at least two glasses of water in the evening when watching TV.

I normally have three cups of tea and/or coffee a day and when it's really hot I'll probably have more fluids.

I drink a lot less water than some people but I feel fine with the amount I have to be honest. DH drinks water constantly and always carries a water bottle around and when out and about. He must have at least 4 litres a day I reckon.

stayathomer · 14/07/2025 09:49

Op I’ve heard recently a lot about over hydration, do you eat a lot of hydrating foods too? They might do the job instead of upping the water, things like cucumbers, fruit etc? I try for 2l on days off but I work in retail and you can’t be going to the toilet all the time (am 45) so don’t get close to enough but I think my saving Grace is that I’m addicted to snack cucumbers, grapes and I eat oily foods, eggs etc

MidoriNoRingo · 14/07/2025 09:50

Far too much. Got a big bollocking from my doctor for flushing out all of my electrolytes. Probably around 7l a day or more. I get panicky if I don’t have access to water, I have a bottle in my hand literally 24/7.

defrazzled · 14/07/2025 10:02

4-5 litres, I always have and feel terrible if I don't. And I don't pee a lot.

frozendaisy · 14/07/2025 10:04

WallaceinAnderland · 13/07/2025 17:27

Urine is supposed to be clear. If it's not, you're not drinking enough water.

We use this method, check your wee for colour and clearness. Quality test basically. It's a decent personal indicator.

frozendaisy · 14/07/2025 10:09

But in answer to your actual question, I drink black coffee first thing, otherwise I am an uncooperative, dizzy, bad-tempered dragon.

Then in summer drink water for rest of day, sometimes I get ambitious and squeeze citrus juice into it, and have a sodastream so make carafes of fizzy water, squeeze of orange/lemon/lime and muddled fruit for interest.

Winter - various selection of herbal teas throughout the day.

If I need a pick me up, will drink a normal tea (well normalish black earl grey or green or white tea) in the afternoon.

But I don't really measure as such the water intake. So not sure on amount. It varies.

zingally · 14/07/2025 10:47

I had my first ever UTI at the age of 40 back in February. I have no idea where it came from.
I felt like I was getting it again about a month ago, but I made a conscious effort to up my fluids and that seemed to catch it and nip it in the bud just in time.
I rarely drink straight water. I mostly exist on well-watered-down squash. I don't mind straight water, but only tend to drink it when I'm properly parched, or on holiday. Probably 1.5 to 2l a day. Although I've been drinking more in this hot weather.
