If you enjoy Wimbledon, who was your 'era'?

Mine was Bjorn Borg (be still my beating heart ❤️), John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ille Nastase et al. I absolutely loved it as a young teenager and wore a headband and sweatbands for most of the two weeks. 😂 Being in Scotland, the school holidays had already started so you could see as much as you liked.

It made me think how different I was as a 14 year old, to 14 year olds now and how much 'younger' I was at the same age.

As a child/teenager I preferred the women’s game. Loved coming home from school and watching Graf annihilate whoever it was she was playing. After that the Belgian girls Henin and Clijsters - Henins backhand was incredible. Then men’s game became more appealing and I loved Sampras and latterly Federer who might be my all time favourite - I smile whenever I see him.

Ivan Lendl was my first tennis hero. He was to me like Jimmy White was to the snooker world championships.

About the age of 16 I moved on and fell in love with Goran. Another underdog. I clearly had a thing for the Eastern European! I can blame my Hungarian step family 😂

Sampras bored me. It was the time of the heavy serves and aces. I did enjoy Agassi for his returns and rallies.

Love him or hate him - I'll always watch Djokovic and admire his achievements.

Me too!!

DF always watched Wimbledon: DM was never interested in the actual tennis, but she rather liked Borg and Henri Leconte.

Also Scottish and loved Martina Chris E and McEnroe. I have a signed copy of JM’s autobiography.

Martina Navratilova was who got me into it in the early 90s. Then loved Pete Samaras, and was delighted when the late Jana Novotna won it after her tears on the shoulder of the Dutchess of Kent.

Latterly it was all about Andy Murray after watching him emerge during Queens 20 years ago(!).

I saw John McEnroe beat Pat Cash in five sets at Wimbledon in 1992. It's the only time I've ever been - nothing will ever surpass how brilliant that was.

Empress13 · 12/07/2025 14:21

Boris, McEnroe, Navratilova, Cash, Lloyd, Nastase, Evert,Borg - the days when they all had personalities and were treated like celebs as always in the gossip columns ! Those were the days !

Same.
Went to Wimbledon on ladies semi finals day in 1976 and watched the Chris Evert vs Martina Navratilova match.
Also saw Billie Jean King, Betty Stove, John Lloyd and one or two others whose names I don't recall.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2025 14:34

Same! Loved seeing Bjorn enjoying the matches and McEnroe commentating. I saw Ille Nastase play once - he was my secret crush. The love story between Connors and Chrissie….
