If you enjoy Wimbledon, who was your 'era'?

Mine was Bjorn Borg (be still my beating heart ❤️), John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ille Nastase et al. I absolutely loved it as a young teenager and wore a headband and sweatbands for most of the two weeks. 😂 Being in Scotland, the school holidays had already started so you could see as much as you liked.

It made me think how different I was as a 14 year old, to 14 year olds now and how much 'younger' I was at the same age.

I can remember my mum being so excited when Ann Jones won Wimbledon. She was a brummie too so we were very proud.
I’m the same era as the op. Loved Bjorn Borg, but also the bad boys, McEnroe and Nastase.
I too wanted to be Chrissie Evert, with her manicured nails, so cool and classy but always wanted Martina Navratilova to beat her. Was never keen on Billie Jean King.

Liked the Murray, Federer, Nadal and Jokavik era too.

Still watch it now but not so much. I can’t keep up with all the newer players.

AmusedMaker · 12/07/2025 10:39

Definitely the McEnroe era. It’s all a bit boring now 😀

MissAmbrosia · 12/07/2025 10:41

I loved it from the early 80s to the mid 90s so many names as mentioned above. I love Andre Agassi. I don't watch it any more as it's all too fast and there just don't seem to be the personalities these days.

For the fellow Agassi fans, Andy Roddick did a great interview with him for his podcast recently. It was like a chat between friends really but so interesting. Hope it's ok to link it here:

Andy also did an interview with Rafa fairly recently which was great, he talked in so much detail about things that he couldn't really be open about while he was playing (mostly tennis strategy but again really interesting).

i also liked Ivanisevic

SueDunome · 12/07/2025 10:50

I don't really have an era, but have followed Borg, Agassi/Graf, Nadal and now Alcaraz.
Alcaraz is younger than my youngest, which is kind of mind blowing.

I was deeply in love with Ivan Lendl. My sister had a thing for Stefan Edberg, so Wimbledons could be frosty at that period.

Of I forgot about Stefan Edberg! I liked him too, he had a kind of Borg look about him that I loved. 😂

Agassi
Becker
Cash
McEnroe

Found Sampras v boring and lost interest but regained with Ivanisevic and then Murray/Nadal/Federer

Monkeytennis97 · 12/07/2025 11:30

Ah Stefan Edberg or Steven Eggnbacon as my father called him

I'm the same era as you OP. Grew up in Scotland. I used to love the first week of the holidays and spent loads of time watching Wimbledon.Jimmy Connors was my favourite and also Chris Evert. My friend and I used to go the park and play loads.of tennis in the evenings and when we went on holiday my Mum and I used to play. Some of the public tennis courts were not the most smooth.😁

I remember it was really exciting when Virginia Wade won.

I don't really watch it now.

Yes I remember that too, I think I was about 10 and my mum was so excited. Happy times indeed.

I totally get this. I still enjoy it, but I don't have the same love for it that I used to. I do wonder if I perhaps look back with rose tinted glasses as I probably do about so many things as I get older.

I still maintain that being a teen in the 80s and in my 20s in the 90s was the very best of times. For me anyway. ☺️

As a child I was a huge fan of Steffi Graf, she seemed to win every year. Pete Sampras was dominating the men's side, though I preferred Agassi.

I lost interest a bit in the late 90s and early 00s, until Roger and Rafa's rivalry started up. I rooted for Rafa ever since. I am enjoying the Sinner/Alcaraz rivalry now.

Borg and Sampras for me. Like you, and Steffi, I loved Agassi.

My second visit to Wimbledon I saw Phillipousis...loved his game.

Federer goes under my radar a bit but he is such a gentleman and amazing performance.

Currently Alcaraz is my favourite.

And for females Steffi as a force to be reckoned with and then I really liked Lindsey Davenport and the late Jana Novotna.

AmIthatSpringy · 12/07/2025 11:43

I'm the same era OP and also in Scotland so we watched and listened on the radio

I loved Ivan Lendl. And Martina Navratilova is still one of my idols.

Monkeytennis97 · 12/07/2025 11:45

Yes Andrew Castle 🤮

MissAnthr0pe · 12/07/2025 11:48

Navratilova was the number 1 female player when I started watching tennis so I guess her era?

Current favourites are Alcaraz, Gauff, Shelton, Zheng, Draper, Anisimova, Humbert, Jabeur, Eala, Musetti, Paolini

Past favourites: Navratilova, Becker, Graf, Sampras, Murray, Serena, Roddick, Tsonga, Bartoli, Kvitova, Chardy

Cynic17 · 12/07/2025 11:48

I am a lifelong tennis fan, but Bjorn Borg was the poster on my wall as a teenager. He is still Mr Cool now.
Then it was Edberg and Becker.
My all-time hero was Roger.... I was so excited to catch a glimpse of him walking around the grounds only yesterday!
And of the new generation, Alcaraz makes everyone smile.
I don't watch quitte so much WTA, but Mirra Andreeva was the great joy of this year's Wimbledon.

Steelworks · 12/07/2025 11:48

Bjorn Borg has aged well!

I remember the end of the Bjorn/Connor days and then the Egberg (swoon)/Agassi/Becker etc days , plus Sampras who never seems to get mentioned nowadays and was champion for years.

HarperStern · 12/07/2025 11:52

Becker, Lendl, Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini, Pat Cash.

Used to go to schoolfriend's house during 6th form holidays and watch the progress of our favourites updated on her teletext TV when they were playing on outside courts. Great days sitting in her stifling hot back sitting room watching numbers update on the screen Grin. I also remember us having an unreasonable and strange hatred of Jimmy Connors - can't remember why now Grin.

Later on we both fell in love with Goran Ivanisevic.

WaitedBlankey · 12/07/2025 11:55

On the subject of commentators, I wish Andrew Cotter could cover every single sport. His voice is lovely.

His commentary of Olive and Mabel during lockdown was a delight.

HelenWheels · 12/07/2025 12:15

andrew cotter is the best

i agree also that the tennis rackets make the game so fast now, i guess we are used to it

HelenWheels · 12/07/2025 12:19

the game is fast, dont seem to be personalities and the top seeds seem to change every year!

VimtoGarden · 12/07/2025 12:24

Chris Evert
Martina Navratilova
Gabriella Sabatini
Jimmy Conners
Stefan Edburg - my hero
Henri Laconte

I loved tennis back then - I don’t watch it as much now - it doesn’t seem as enjoyable.

I would love a Wimbledon where they all agreed to play with the same wooden racket. It would be a lot more interesting and entertaining

mydogisthebest · 12/07/2025 12:28

Same era as you OP. I loved Bjorn Borg and it was him that started my interest in tennis.

The newspapers were full of photos of Borg and I decided to go to Wimbledon to try and get in to watch him play. I did manage to and, for the next 6 years, I was one of the crazy ones who slept on the pavement (yes not the grass today's queue get to sleep on) and I was lucky enough to be on Centre Court for every one of Borg's wins.

I am not as interested in tennis now but always watch a lot of Wimbledon and apply for tickets every year (without success).

bombastix · 12/07/2025 12:34

For those of you saying the game seems more faster and more boring, that is probably because it is. Tennis with an old skool racket is hard to play - really hard. Whereas today’s rackets mean huge power and sweet spot bigger than your own head.

It also favours younger players, a baseline game and power serves. Tennis used to be a much more tactical and varied game
