Badenoch was offered a briefing on the super injunction and declined it as not necessary.

But then I suppose she might not have needed it given she was in government as was Truss/Johnson/Sunak/Braverman/Jenrick/Anderson etc.

She’s blaming civil servants for not flagging it as urgent. 🙄

Thought she was all about taking responsibility for the previous Conservative fuck ups?

On bias reporting, re the Afghan/MOD leak... pissed off hearing that "Successive Govts continued the restrictions...."

It was ALL on the Tories, a new govt coming in, with the issues they had, cannot be expected to know about a Super Injunction, by its very nature, its secret.

The extra costs are expected to be in the region of £2.5 billion, with total costs around £6 billion.

It's a shameful waste of money, highly typical of the past Tory Government.

BIossomtoes · 16/07/2025 17:23

It’s another of their nasty traps left behind to salt the earth for this government.

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2025 17:31

Point of order. The courts continued the restrictions.

The level of reportage would shame a primary school.

Once useful application of "AI" is to scan a story and list the count of facts therein. Then either the absolute number, or the ratio of facts/words can be used to determine the worth of the story. Or "story".

Principally it would be a clickbait filter. But it would also weigh puff pieces so you don't have to.

(This isn't anything groundbreaking. Non-thick people will already be aware of that experience of reading a "story", getting to the end and realising you still don't know where, when or who it happened to. All you know is it's been posted in MN as gospel 😀)

Except that despite a scorched earth policy from the right wing media and a proponderance to cater to the lowest common denominator within even media that's non biased, still Labour carry on chipping away to reset the agenda to give a better life to all. Even to those who would destroy you.

Karistyleaftea · 16/07/2025 18:09

BBC reporting bias in full mode today.
It needs to be addressed,
in my opinion.

Starmer has removed the whip from 3 MPs for breaching party discipline. More in the pipeline apparently, and it’s over the benefits vote. I think this is a mistake. It looks less like undermining/U turn if you can say we listened to opinions and changed our plans. Suspending people for giving their opinion makes it look more like weakness.

I'm not sure singling out a few of them, largely new MPs is a good idea. If they've suspended these 4 surely Richard Burgon and Imran Hussain are next?

BIossomtoes · 16/07/2025 18:25

I’d love to know what Starmer’s thinking is because I can’t see any benefit to it.

Alexandra2001 · 16/07/2025 19:03

Just as the Afghan story breaks, which should lead some embarrassment for the Tories, Starmer suspends 4 MP's for voting against a dire bill.... which the Cons are now making the most of....

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:09

I'm quite surprised how I feel about this. I feel these MPs should have been suspended. And wonder if they're suited to be MPs in a party that's actually in government. It just feels self indulgent.

But they're not "giving their opinion " they are voting against. Maybe they should have decided to be in another party instead.

I would like a back bench MP to be able to vote without fear, we are supposed to live in a democracy... for all.

According to Ch4 News, Blair never suspended a single MP from the
Plp.
I wonder if Starmer will win 3 GE's?

Instead of quelling the back benches, i think it will embolden them.

Its also highlighting division, a split, out of control party, lack of discipline, Starmer is weak.... .. etc will be the headlines tomo, the Afghan story quietly forgotten.

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:30

But the MPs have their part to play. They chose to be in the Labour Party. If they want to vote against the government they are perfectly entitled to do so if the resign the whip. It's pretty standard and pretty basic.

I'm fucked off because the party has form for tearing itself to bits.

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:31

I think them voting against emboldened them. Not the whip being taken away. You just don't do this.

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:32

And who's highlighting division? The MPs voting against that's who.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2025 19:33

The Afghan story was always going to be sidelined.
If it wasn’t this it would have been Reeves something, something etc
The idea that backbenchers have autonomy over their votes has never been correct under any government. Blair must have just had a more efficient whip as well as better comms (and money to spend).

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:34

And the headlines will be Starmer is weak whatever.

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:35

And what @Notonthestairs says 😀

I don't know why I'm so riled up but I am. Well I do. The MPs are being idiots

Alexandra2001 · 16/07/2025 19:35

Blair had significant rebellions.... the party should deal with this quietly.

The media will jump on this, just as the Benefits debacle had gone away.

tobee · 16/07/2025 19:43

Wankers like Corbyn and McDonnell were always voting against the party.

As I said though @Alexandra2001 the MPs have their part to play. Voting against is not a quiet thing to do. We don't have secret ballots in the House. Maybe the leadership did try to deal with quietly and they were persistently voting against anyway.

We have a democracy in the country but they are MPs representing their constituents but backed and funded by the Labour Party when standing as Labour MPs. You either just care about your constituents and stand as an independent. Perfectly fine option. Or you are loyal to your party by voting with them.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2025 19:43

Well the Government have stated it is for persistent breaches - so more than the vote.

Karistyleaftea · 16/07/2025 19:51

@tobee I agree with a lot of what you are saying tonight.

It is incredile to me that our media seems unable to be critical of the Tories.

Even when Sir Ed Davey was offering support to our PM the BBC , in my opinion , managed to spin it as a negative on tonight's evening news. Shameless.

Well the Labour Party do seem to be able to make it very easy for them...

If these 4 go to Corbyns new outfit, it then has "momentum" with 6 MPs.

To me its poor party management, if they are going to be suspended, do i at the time of the vote, not when there is something bad about the Tories last stint.
