Why have my new neighbours have not moved in yet?

Id love to know a list of reasons as to why someone would not move straight in to their new property.
Old neighbours left around midday and I'm interested to know what reasons there would be for them not moving in at the usual completion time?
So far I have thought of...
Something wrong with funds
First time buyer living at home so no need to move straight away (wouldn't you still come and look at it though to make sure everything ok)
Needs renovation (I dont think there is anything urgent)
Family emergency

If anyone can think of anything else, let me know. Nosey neighbour at the ready. Lighthearted please

Maybe they’ve got work they want to do in the house? Perhaps on holiday? Who knows my partners buyers did lots of work and had a wedding after completion so moved in 3 weeks afterwards

Pasithean · 10/07/2025 18:17

We didn’t get to one house til 9 pm and another til the next day as we where moving miles.

LlynTegid · 10/07/2025 18:17

On holiday perhaps, as if they have not got children it is a lot cheaper this week than in a couple of weeks time?

Spirallingdownwards · 10/07/2025 18:19

We completed on a house we bought but didn't move in until the next day because completion was the day of my son's graduation and it was easier for the sake of the chain for the removal to to store our stuff overnight and we stayed at a hotel in graduation town and moved in next day.

Perhaps they are in a rental and are finishing off school term where they live now and kids will gi to a new school in the area from September.

Maybe they are in rented and are going to decorate/renovate before moving in.

Maybe it's just a property for a cannabis farm?

When we sold our last house the people who bought it were moving from a council house and deliberately gave their notice to them with a month's overlap so they could do stuff like replace the boiler and radiators and redecorate before they moved in.

starpatch · 10/07/2025 18:20

If they are moving rented they likely have a notice period during which they have to pay rent anyway, so no rush to move

Judiezones · 10/07/2025 18:20

Our neighbours didn't move in straight away because they had renovations done which took 4 months and they lived with relatives until the house was liveable. The house was fine but they wanted to change the layout. Unfortunately it was 4 months of noise for us, but they were very apologetic and the builders were nice reasonable people so it wasn't too bad.

JaneGrint · 10/07/2025 18:21

Sometimes people do renovations because they don’t like the style of what’s existing rather than because there’s anything wrong.

We had neighbours that did that, replaced the kitchen and bathroom and redecorated everything before moving in, despite the previous owners having done all that just a year or two before.

And also it’s not a long time since lunchtime. Maybe the new owners are at work today, maybe the old owners left a few days before the final exchange?

Regardless, I’d give it a bit longer before musing over why the new people aren’t in yet!

My DS didn’t move into his first home straightaway, his gf is from another county so had to work on the day and they wanted to go in first time together. Also they couldn’t order any furniture as they were only given 5 days notice, the bed arrived 10 days later.

fourelementary · 10/07/2025 18:22

Moving from a rental and want to wait til the weekend? When I bought my first house I had a two week period of renting available and so got the house deep cleaned and a few rooms decorated before moving in. But I went there on the move in day and had a nosey around and thought “what the fuck have I done!!!”

Teajenny7 · 10/07/2025 18:23

We moved in two weeks later as we had it rewired and a new boiler.
My neighbour took a holiday to Disney World before moving in.

CarpetKnees · 10/07/2025 18:39

Moving from rented or from parents

Moving from a long way away and plan to move in tomorrow

On holiday

Is a Landlord and is going to rent

If I had the option, I'd never plan to move in on the same day someone else was moving out - it is a thing we are pushed in to because of 'the system'.

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 10/07/2025 18:41

Maybe there’s no rush.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 10/07/2025 18:44

It's a Thursday. Maybe the vendors have moved out and completion is tomorrow. That's what we found out our vendors had done. Annoying because we had to wait for their solicitor to get back from his lunch to confirm they had received our funds.

DoAWheelie · 10/07/2025 18:45

I always overlap by a month so I can slowly move everything and get it set up exactly as I want it without feeling hurried. I have a chronic illness and I'm limited to how much I can do in a day so it usually takes most of the month. I don't tend to start sleeping at the new place until about halfway into the process.

All I can say is I would not like to live next door to you.

Magnir · 10/07/2025 18:48

Maybe renting and notice period overlapped or live with parents or cash buyer and deliberately overlapped for ease of moving

VintageKefir · 10/07/2025 18:51

Quite imagining the anticlimax from completion if the new owner is here. Or any other new owner who didn't move in straight away. 😳

I didn't move in straight away into any property upon getting the keys including rentals.

same omg @Noseynooare you really questioning why someone is not in within the SAME DAY!!!!!!! Christ on a bike

Marble10 · 10/07/2025 21:20

We brought our house 3 months ago and still no move in date. Currently undergoing renovations. Lucky enough to still be living in our old house until it’s complete.

ooooohlala · 10/07/2025 22:03

We knew were were going to do a tonne of work on the place, so there was no point rushing round. Builders were booked to start soon after.

Are you sure they haven’t popped in - have you been staring though your net curtains all afternoon?

Octavia64 · 10/07/2025 22:06

my current house didn’t have a working boiler or hot water system when I bought it so I waited to move in until that work had been done (and the hole in the roof fixed!)

Nn9011 · 10/07/2025 22:08

Could be a landlord purchase - wouldn't have a tenant cued the same day. Possibly just someone who rents and doesn't need to be out till end of month - slow moving date?

Littletreefrog · 10/07/2025 22:09

We didnt move in straight away as we were able to buy our new house before selling our old house. We completed 20th December. I couldn't be faffing on with moving before Christmas so we had one last Christmas in our old house then slowly moved our things over bit by bit in January until we were completely moved in by mid January.

alexalisten · 10/07/2025 22:13
