Why have my new neighbours have not moved in yet?

Noseynoo · 10/07/2025 18:15

Id love to know a list of reasons as to why someone would not move straight in to their new property.
Old neighbours left around midday and I'm interested to know what reasons there would be for them not moving in at the usual completion time?
So far I have thought of...
Something wrong with funds
First time buyer living at home so no need to move straight away (wouldn't you still come and look at it though to make sure everything ok)
Needs renovation (I dont think there is anything urgent)
Family emergency

If anyone can think of anything else, let me know. Nosey neighbour at the ready. Lighthearted please

I was in rented and had until the end of the month left on my lease. So I did a deep clean before moving in, then moved at the weekend once I had sorted out the removal guys and packed things up.

Meant I didn't need to take too much time off work, although I ended up having a week off a couple of weeks later with norovirus/food poisoning (not sure which but I've never been that ill).

Cynic17 · 11/07/2025 08:37

Loads of reasons but I can't believe the OP is even checking...... none of your business!

Really? It's natural to be curious about who's moving in next to you, surely, as they have the potential to impact your life.

And if they don't arrive as expected, to then wonder why.

IamEarthymama · 11/07/2025 08:47

I can’t believe people are telling OP off for idly wondering why she hasn’t seen her new neighbour yet!
I live in a tiny community within a village and it would definitely be noted.
Luckily there would be no malice intended, we all look out for each other.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/07/2025 08:52

When we bought our house 25 years ago we moved in as soon as we had legally completed. The previous owners had a long journey to make and they had moved out the day before.

MidnightPatrol · 11/07/2025 09:24

I thought this was going to be that they’d not moved in for weeks or months, not hours!

They might just be at work.

Tillow4ever · 11/07/2025 09:34

Could be they’re working and planning to move in after work?

we were delayed by 4 hours because our solicitor “forgot” to tell the estate agent (or us) that everything had gone through (we had been forced to use that solicitor for the purchase and we refused to let them do the sale as SIL worked for a conveyancing solicitors firm and we wanted to use them, the firm we were forced to use were bloody awful and we weren’t impressed with them at all).

they could be moving from a long way away, so Ieft their old property at midday and have a 5 hour drive to get to their new property?

They might be unwell and unable to manage the move but have completed etc already and are staying with family/friends until well enough.

They might not have completed yet - your old neighbour may have moved out today as got a long journey, or going on holiday and won’t be there when completion happens

Their car or moving truck might have broken down en route

Moving from rented and have given themselves time to move slowly

Might have booked a cleaning or decorating service to come in before they get all their stuff in there

Could have bought intending to let it out

could have bought it as a second home - my parents bought their “retirement home” YEARS before they were ready to move out from where they were and it sat empty for a good 8-10 years before they were finally going to move in (although they did start to get bits of furniture in there, work done and go and sit up there for an odd afternoon during that time).

There’s likely millions of reasons when you think of all the things that could just delay someone every day. I find it interesting that your first thought was a funds issue - especially as the person moving out was likely relying on the money coming through to buy wherever they were moving to, so if the funds well through their inward purchase will have too!

mondaytosunday · 11/07/2025 09:43

Redecorating? Travelling from a distance so not arriving til late or next day? Movers issues (this delayed my move by five days due to their idiocy). Or it’s an investment to let out?

Utterlyconfusednow · 11/07/2025 10:29

Have you got alternative entertainment as a back up OP?

angelos02 · 11/07/2025 10:30

bungobungobungo · 11/07/2025 10:26

Me too!

Hours?! We took over a month to move in due to having that amount of time left on our rental and it was so much easier having the overlap. Also, it never occurred to me that anyone would notice. My neighbours have been on holiday for a couple of weeks and only noticed when I happened to be outside when their taxi arrived back and they unloaded suitcases.

WhatTheHelll · 11/07/2025 10:31

I wasn’t in any rush to move into my new house as I had access to another house and could spend time getting it ready to move into.

fthisfthatfeverything · 11/07/2025 10:31

Why do you care?

Crochetpenguin · 11/07/2025 10:36

We were both refused the days around completion off work (worked at same place) so couldn't move in for a few days. Fortunately we were first time buyers at the time.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 11/07/2025 10:46

My cuntyfuckface neighbours didn't move in for three years! They slowly, painfully, noisily did their shittychavy house up.

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/07/2025 10:53

The hpuse is haunted and they have to wait for a full moon for an exorcism

They may want to deep clean and decorate through out before moving in.

Spidey66 · 11/07/2025 11:13

Maybe booked a few days off from work and waiting till then.

we’ve just bought a house, like others we were in rented so just took it slowly.

Lots of people do work first.

alexalisten · 10/07/2025 22:13

My neighbours didn't move in for months it was really weird i never found out why but was always curious

Same here, no renovations done, just didn't move in but came and went now and again. They are still odd and I can't get to grips of who is actually living there as in what the family set up is. Don't think it's anything dodgy though

mumda · 11/07/2025 11:49

Moved from rented to here. This place needed rewiring urgently so that got done first.
We then decorated and carpeted a couple of rooms that needed it.

You can think I'm nosey but I stay up late with the curtains open as we have a curious street and I love people watching.

One lot never moved in - Saw police arrive a few times during the day and I have been told the police turned up at 3am not so long ago to release the wife and a child from the house. Husband is in the press for various quite serious offences. House for sale for a lot more than she paid as she wants "to make something from the divorce". House now rented out.

Another lot didn't move in and proceeded to have a huge extension built. Not sure they've moved in yet as there's rarely any lights on.

deckchaironnabeach · 11/07/2025 12:07

Because they live far away and take an overnight stay to get there?

im bloody glad you’re not my NDN if you are that invested in my comings and goings!

Finteq · 11/07/2025 12:09

We didn't move in for at least a year.

Although there wasn't urgent work.

I wasn't happy with the kitchen.

Got new flooring carpets.

Walls painted etc

Modernme · 11/07/2025 12:52

I got my keys to my now home and didnt move in for 3 days.
When i did move in i done it in the dark at night it was winter time.
I was so busy in the day time i painted the place out one night cleaned it the following night and moved in the 3rd night.

Calabasas · 11/07/2025 12:54

Maybe they’re planning to rent it out? Or have no chain their end & no impetus to get in quickly. They may want to do all decorating /upgrades before they move in? They’re planning major renovations which will mean impossible to live in. They’re on holiday. Someone died. Cld be any number of reasons! You sound a bit over invested though. Are you that neighbour??!

SingleAHF · 11/07/2025 12:58

My neighbour did not move in for six months because she preferred to live in her late ex husband's old house whilst disposing of his belongings.
