Holiday room mess up!

On holiday in Greece with DH and our teens DD18 and DS17. When we booked we specifically searched for a place with 2 separate bedrooms. We found a self catering hotel apartment - 2 bedrooms (1 x twin, 1 x double) with a separate living room/kitchenette.
On arrival we were told we’d been “upgraded” only to be dropped at the room and find it’s 1 bedroom with 2 single sofa beds in the living room/kitchenette.
We went back to reception to be told the new room is superior and newer. We specifically wanted 2 bedrooms with the separate living room/kitchenette so we asked to have what we booked. Apparently there is not one available.
It seems they overbook the 2 bedrooms then try to “upgrade” you to a 1 bedroom with put you ups.
The head receptionist isn’t here until 9pm but we’ve been told there’s not a 2 bedroom to move us to. It’s a small hotel.
We booked with a reputable well known tour operator. They’re investigating but have also been told by hotel no one available to speak until 9pm.
I don’t want to overreact but we have no separate living areas. The teens and their luggage are in the living room. DD has ADHD and doesn’t sleep great so we won’t be able to get a cup of tea/breakfast etc until they’re awake each day.
I don’t even know what option we have but to put up with it! Had a horrible few months and I know there’s worse things and that this is minor for 14 days.
Realistically what can the tour operator do when in reality we have enough beds to sleep on and the hotel is saying they don’t have a spare 2 bedroom for us? I just feel what we have is not what we paid for. I’m not after money.
I think I just needed to vent a bit. I’m probably tired, up since 2.30am. I’m irritated too that they tried to tell us it was an upgrade!

That's very much a downgrade. I'd be furious.

TheNightingalesStarling · 10/07/2025 17:27

Can you share the bedroom with your DD and your partner and son take the living room?

MsFogi · 10/07/2025 17:29

That is definitely a downgrade rather than an upgrade. I would be going all out with the tour operator.

I agree, but I can have a tendency to be upset or stressed my things disproportionately so I wanted to check. Thanks.

No, our room is a double - she definitely can’t share a bed easily. At least the living room is 2 singles.

I’m waiting to hear from them but I don’t actually think in practical terms they can fix it if there’s not a 2 bedroom available.

Temporarily coupd you and her take the living room and your DH amd son take the bedroom? And try to sort it out on the meantime with the tour operator even if it means you move hotel.

HappyKatieA · 10/07/2025 17:31

It’s not what you paid for, I would dig my heels in. Can they give you two one beds?

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/07/2025 17:31

Tui by any chance?

We could, but we still have no living area. She’s happy sharing with DS as they get on, it’s the loss of a separate area that’s now full of luggage, clothes and teens!

Tui by any chance?

Yes! But I don’t think it’s their fault - the booking confirmation says 2 bedrooms.

Good shout. This would work. Suspect hotel is fully booked but will suggest this.

Yes definitely a downgrade, I’d absolutely complain, but it might also be that they don’t have one ‘today’ - make it clear that as soon as the next person moves out of a 2 bed, you want it!

Britneyfan · 10/07/2025 17:37

No, I would be furious about this too and I’m pretty easy going about this sort of thing and have never complained about a hotel room in my life. You’re not overreacting. 2 bedrooms and a living area/kitchenette does not equal one bedroom and a living area/kitchenette with a couple of sofa beds in it. It’s not what you carefully picked out and paid for. I’m cross on your behalf!

I guess if they don’t have the rooms they don’t have the rooms as you say but they could offer to move you to a nearby hotel as an upgrade at their expense. I know you said you’re not after money, and I know money wont fix the real issue, but I feel like they should at the very least be offering to give you a hefty partial refund.

Britneyfan · 10/07/2025 17:39

And yes 2 separate rooms is another option they should be looking at for you. Also as a pp has said there may be a room eg tomorrow so do make clear you want to move then if that’s an option.

SociableAtWork · 10/07/2025 17:41

You need to insist on what you’ve paid for - 2 separate bedrooms AND a living area/kitchenette.

Hopefully they’ll be able to resolve it for you. Dig your heels in and remember YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT and asking for nothing more than what you booked and paid for.

Awww, what a shitty start - it’ll be OK, it’ll get sorted xx

Tui are absolutely shite, they've messed us about like this with our last two hotel bookings, what we'd booked was suddenly "no longer available" and they gave away our prebooked and paid for seat bookings on the return flight. They'll never see another penny of my money.

mismomary · 10/07/2025 17:41

I'd be livid too. Can the tour operator move you to a different hotel? Or offer compensation?

MummyChocolateMonster · 10/07/2025 17:42

Thank you everyone, really appreciate it. I spend ages researching holidays and this place seemed ideal. We will have to stick it for tonight but we’ve made it clear we want to be moved to what we booked. We’re not unpacking in optimism but it’s unsettling.
We like the hotel but also now feel like the awkward customers!
I do feel very upset but don’t want to let it overshadow things but it is!

CagneyNYPD1 · 10/07/2025 17:44

I would be pushing for 2 one bed apartments either next to each other or close by. Or your original accommodation.

Justwaits · 10/07/2025 17:45

Slap a smile on
accept tonight not ideal
get out of the room and go for a walk along the promenade and have a cocktail

MummyChocolateMonster · 10/07/2025 17:46

I will update when we have an outcome. Preference is obvs what we booked but 2 x 1 bed apartment would work although ideally we’d be together. We brought games to play etc and relaxing in living area of an evening appealed. Off to see the head receptionist at 9pm but she can’t magic a room from nowhere if they’re full.

Your family will be feeding off you

rustle everyone up and out the room and go for an explore and a walk

mismomary · 10/07/2025 17:46

You have every right to be upset. But equally you are right not to let this ruin your holiday. Dump your bags and find the pool!

Calmly state to Tui that the only solutions are:
Move to the room you booked
Move to another hotel
Move to two one bed rooms
Failing this, compensation is required.
