What a bloody funny show that was. I remember it so well and I would watch it with my brother and parents and we would absolutely be creased and crying with laughter. 😂

I'm going to say that if you were of an age to watch that kind of TV programme particularly in the 1970s it would be impossible for you not to remember it 😂

With only 3 TV channels it must have audiences in the double figure millions every week

I remember “It’s a Royal Knockout”. Started me off in my lifetime commitment to Republicanism….….

Reggiebo · 09/07/2025 19:21

Yes.. definitely...Stuart Hall used to compare ..and definitely remember the royal one

Yes I remember it, suppose it was the cheaper forerunner of Total Wipeout.

Brefugee · 09/07/2025 19:28

started in the 70s, then it went European with Jeux Sans Frontieres and was bloody brilliant.

cariadlet · 09/07/2025 19:31

I loved it as a kid in the 70s.

Of course, back then, Stuart Hall was just the funny man with a stupid laugh. We didn't know that he was a sexual predator. That's tainted the memory for me.

Tiswa · 09/07/2025 19:31

We had the board game.

the it’s a royal knockout was one of the maddest tv events I have ever seen

i have just googled and the teams make it even weirder than I remember

Yeah it has a bit hasn't it. 😬

But we all laughed at him laughing which made it even funnier.

It was brilliant tv, everyone watched it. Yes, his laughter made the show extra funny really....if only we knew !

Ilovemyshed · 09/07/2025 19:37

It didn’t end well for the host Stuart Hall.

TourdeFrance2025 · 09/07/2025 19:39

It was better in the 70's.

LandladyofTheValley · 09/07/2025 19:40

DH took part in it and broke his ankle.
Now we know what was going on behind the scenes with the presenter he feels he got off light

Strobbery · 09/07/2025 19:40

Oh I loved Its a Knockout! The British version was OK, but the European one was brilliant, much bigger, more money spent on the games!

The theme tunes have now entered my head!

Strobbery · 09/07/2025 19:43

Playing the Joker, and Eddie Waring the referee!

tobee · 09/07/2025 19:44

If you can bear to (now we know about Stuart Hall) there's some on YouTube I believe

Rowgtfc72 · 09/07/2025 19:44

They came to Cleethorpes Bathing pool.
My dad took me, I remember I had my new coat on and was on tv!

tobee · 09/07/2025 19:48

The U.K. ones were a bit cheap and cheerful with the cold and rain in Scunthorpe and games with packing cases and builder's pallets.

The European ones with fairy tale castles etc, bathed in the yellowy flood lights and Stuart Hall talking down a distorted telephone line on a hot evening in Antwerp or Basel were impossibly glamorous! 😃

Excellent!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/07/2025 19:50

And wasn't it Eddie Waring who used to help commentate? My family also used to cry with laughter at the competitors running up a greasy slope with bungee cords holding them back... And huge inflatables trying to squeeze through a tiny gap.
It was a simpler time.

JDM625 · 09/07/2025 19:54

Yes, I remember it and was in the audience in the mid 80's abroad with my family and cousins. They filmed various versions around the world too.

MistyMountainTop · 09/07/2025 20:15

It was a 60s show! I saw them rehearsing for it at Blackpool Lido when I was a child!

I did prefer the Peter Gabriel song Jeux Sans Frontiers to the show though 😉

It started in 1966! Good innocent hilarity, I enjoyed it as a kid.
(mind you same applied to Rolf Harris. )
