What do teachers actually like to receive??

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 09/07/2025 11:19

like many, I get my children’s teacher and TA a small gift at the end of the school year.

every year I struggle to know what to get - I want to gift something that they would actually get use out of, not waste my money and provide inconvenient clutter for them.

both teachers are male.

is alcohol appropriate?!

if any teachers on here could give some input I’d really appreciate it.

Gift cards. Not plastic/frames/models/tat.

Hitkickclimb · 09/07/2025 21:40

Best gifts are:

  • thank you card with handwritten message
-email to the headteacher with me copied in.

There is no expectation of more but if your child wants to do more and is hassling you:
-a packet of biscuits I can leave in the cupboard to have ready for a wet play week of doom in the Autumn.
-a cutting from one of your house plants.
-one parent gave me a couple of home made scones with a mini jam and cream.
-a punnet of strawberries was greatly appreciated one year.
-I was given a fab ice lolly on a very hot last day and I loved that!

How much would you say is enough to give? Would ÂŁ10 be too little?

Don't bother with buying a card even for 99p it's a waste of money. Make one, or write a note.

Avoid mugs and keyrings. I didn't mind not getting gifts as didn't expect them especially as at least half of intake were from a deprived area but when I did get gifts, the best ones were probably vouchers.

We had a boots and costs in walking distance from us so a ÂŁ5 voucher was much appreciated for the odd lunch time drink or meal deal.

Prosecco tbh

I was a TA for over ten years and the handwritten cards from both the children and parents, is just so lovely.
One of the most thoughtful gifts I ever received, was a friendship bracelet. Days before, this child had asked me what my favourite colour was and I just assumed it was general chit-chat but at the end of term, she gave me, the teacher and the other TA a homemade friendship bracelet, all in our favourite colour. I was so touched that she went to that effort!
I also have a personalised book mark that I love.

Bananarama2000 · 09/07/2025 21:50

The only things I ever kept were the handmade cards and drawings. Honestly anything else was fairly irrelevant

TheNimblePinkMoose · 09/07/2025 21:52

I’ve always loved the hand written cards by the children, especially when they are personal from that child. If you really want to buy something I’ve liked getting plants - not flowers - but an easy to care for plant. I’ve still got the ones that were gifted to me many years ago

Definitely not. I was a teacher and really appreciated ÂŁ5 gift cards. So ÂŁ10 is more than enough but do ÂŁ5 if it's more affordable.

Don't buy a card to go along with it, write a message on the gift card/envelope

sheffexpat74 · 09/07/2025 21:58

A card with a thoughtful message. I find gifts awkward/unnecessary.

AitkenDrum1970 · 09/07/2025 22:00

Card written by the child is best. After that the best gift ever was a takeaway cup of tea and a cake brought in at home time on the last day when I was on my knees with exhaustion, it was so welcome.
Or wine!!

DH is a teacher and the things that are best are vouchers, alcohol, chocolate. Cards are cute if the kids are little and handmade. Everything else is sweet but quickly becomes clutter that takes up space

I echo what others say about perishables / vouchers / nice card.

As an anecdote, a favourite present of mine was a juicy red strawberry. A little 5 year old boy came one day with a juicy red strawberry nicely washed and in a sandwich bag. He was proud as punch. I made a huge fuss and thanked him, even thought slightly puzzled. A little later I picked up a message from his Nan who he lived with, to say that his strawberry plant had produced its first strawberry and that all he wanted to do was bring it to school for me as a present. It was one of my favourite moments in a long teaching career.

This is adorable 🥰

Rubiscoisfantastic · 09/07/2025 22:15

I love a heartfelt, handwritten note of thanks. That’s all!

NameChange30 · 09/07/2025 22:18

For people buying gift cards, I suggest one which can be used in local shops, cafes etc (can include independents as well as chains). There are cards for lots of towns and cities:

I would not be eating a home made cake!
Although I wouldn’t tell them that obviously and would accept it with profuse thanks.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 09/07/2025 22:40

do not buy a present. if your child liked them see if they would make a card and write a funny / thoughtful / poem inside. do not buy a present

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 09/07/2025 22:47

A card with a note honestly means so much, or even just a verbal thanks.

If you do want to buy something, then for me, stationery. I love stationery!

FieldsOfPotatoes · 09/07/2025 22:59

I’ve just ordered these for DC teachers. I know adult colouring is quite popular at the moment so thought they’d go nicely with a £10 Starbucks gift card
