How to get to work now

chocolatemuffin75 · 08/07/2025 17:56

My shifts are changing at work to 6am starts, I don’t have a car, couldn’t really afford one as I live alone, I can’t afford a taxi everyday, I would have to leave my house at 5.25am everyday, does anyone else have to walk to work early mornings? Just wondering how safe it is going to be, obviously it should be ok at this time of year but come winter I’m not so sure, there is no one at work who can give me a lift either.

Is it walking on pavements and well lit streets or dim country roads? How about getting a bike or moped, is that an option?

MuggleMe · 08/07/2025 17:59

How far is it? Any chance you could get a moped or similar?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 08/07/2025 18:00

Is that leaving at 5.25 to walk to work? That doesn’t seem bad. Can you get a push bike?

Be on the pavement, but lighting might not be great, I’m just wondering if there would be a few cars about at that time? No I can’t ride a moped

How long a walk?

CleanShirt · 08/07/2025 18:03

Can you get a bicycle?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/07/2025 18:04

35 min walk so must be just under 2 miles, easy walk or get a bike and probably only take 20mins

ShamrockShenanigans · 08/07/2025 18:04

Can you cycle?

HamSandwichKiller · 08/07/2025 18:04

How about an electric bike? Obviously you’d need a secure place to store it at work.

Yes do you think there will be quite a bit of traffic about? I haven’t rode a pushbike since I was about 10 😀

No I wouldn’t feel safe on one

Yes I don’t mind the walk but I’m thinking of my safety

Get a bike and a cycling lesson as a refresher. Cycling that distance will be a lot easier and safer at that time of day then walking.

What is making you feel unsafe?

How will cycling be safer? All the cyclists I know have accidents sometimes and it's extremely rare for a pedestrian to fall.
I wouldn't cycle unless there was a bike lane the whole way or they were extremely safe small roads.

Getting attacked or mugged? I’m not sure how many people or cars are around at that time of day.

Do you do the walk now? It's just the time of day that's changing?

It really depends on the nature of the walk. Relatively main roads with pavements all the way, fine.

No idea OP, we don’t no where you live or what your route to work is. 35 min walk to work is ok though, maybe get yourself a rape alarm for reassurance.

Yes I walk now but at a more reasonable time, it is on the pavement and quite a busy road but not sure how busy at that time of the morning

I do this sort of journey at 2-4am regularly (work
in a bar) and never felt unsafe although a bike would be preferable. It’s light by then this time
of year

MrsFeljne · 08/07/2025 18:14

35 minute walk is a tiny journey to cycle, it’ll take you less than 10 minutes.

Get a bike, get some decent lights, high vis and helmet and you’re sorted.

It’s a fairly busy road but not so sure at that time of the morning

Can you ask in your local FB group?
