How to get to work now

My shifts are changing at work to 6am starts, I don’t have a car, couldn’t really afford one as I live alone, I can’t afford a taxi everyday, I would have to leave my house at 5.25am everyday, does anyone else have to walk to work early mornings? Just wondering how safe it is going to be, obviously it should be ok at this time of year but come winter I’m not so sure, there is no one at work who can give me a lift either.

I do this sort of journey at 2-4am regularly (work
in a bar) and never felt unsafe although a bike would be preferable. It’s light by then this time
of year

How long do you have to walk? Yes ok this time of year but not so much in the winter

Can you ask in your local FB group?

I was thinking of doing this

Or just get up early and go and see what it's like at that time??

I think I would rather walk at 5:30 am. rather than 11:00pm as most people are likely to be in their beds at 5:30 unless they were going to work also.

RaininSummer · 08/07/2025 18:23

I think learning to ride a bike again would be best. Your company might even do the cycle to work scheme which will help with the cost.

Blushingm · 08/07/2025 18:24

Have a personal alarm if you’re concerned

Yes I did think this, I think I will just feel vulnerable as nobody will be around

About half an hour but to be fair there is 2 24 hour garages along the road. It isn’t the nicest in winter but I have no choice if I want to keep my job

Cycling should be fine for such a short distance, have a look at your local cycling map to see if there are cycle routes/quiet roads you can use without going too far out of your way. You shouldn’t need to change clothes unless it’s raining. I cycle a lot (urban commuting) and can’t remember the last time I had any hassle and have never fallen off. Otherwise enjoy the walk. I have this kind of theory criminals are late night rather than early morning types - that’s why the police do dawn raids isn’t it?

edit - I don’t know where the gif came from

Houndsahollering · 08/07/2025 18:26

Depends on where you live really. Our old house was on the route to a few out of town industrial units and by 5.30am there were plenty of people about walking/cycling to work, and a fair few cars on the road. Invest in a good quality head torch for the darker mornings.
I’ve walked my dogs at 4am since 2016 round there and actually felt less safe in the summer with pissed up people doing the walk of shame than I ever did in winter

chocolatemuffin75 · 08/07/2025 18:27

I guess I’m asking will people be going to work at that time? I’m presuming so

I think you’re being a bit mad OP. I walked 50 minutes to work in all weathers to school from 12.

I currently cycle 6 miles to work and 6 miles home, or have to walk 40 mins to a bus.

It’s pretty normal to have to do this. Nobody wants to, especially when it’s dark or cold, but it’s not at all
unusual. You just have to do it.

Magnir · 08/07/2025 18:30

I think a lot will be going at that time because a lot of factories and warehouses do a 6-2 shift

It’s a main road near a train station will people be catching trains at that time of the morning?

Of course people will going to work at that time, just as you are. How far is it, around 2 miles? On a bike, you could do that in 10 minutes or less.

I’m not bothered about the weather or the walk, I like walking I’m just concerned for my safety at that time of the morning

Are there trains timetabled to stop/depart at that time? If so, then yes.

No idea unless you tell people where you live - as asked several times now. Do the trains run through the station at that time?

What is the change of start time? You say changing to start at 6am but what has it been until now?
If it was me I would happily do the half hour walk but would hate to start work so early, so I’d start to look for another job!

hexsnidgett · 08/07/2025 18:35

I remember once going to the supermarket at 8 o clock on a Saturday morning, I thought it would be really quiet.Grin
Lots of people start early, you will be fine.

Why don't you look at the train timetables and see what time trains start running?
